Hey I am new here but I have been reading loads of posts trying to figure out if gluten is the cause of my ailments for so long. My doctor says these values are insignificant and show I am Celiac negative and have no abnormal reaction to gluten. This testing was performed after 1 week of being entirely gluten free.

My symptoms: mostly neurological, shaky eyes, migraines, dizzy when looking up/down, lack of concentration/memory, intrusive thoughts, depressive mood, strange sensations in my head, shaky limbs, tremor attacks, hands had intense tingling and was unable to move them for a short period, insomnia, always feeling sick with no culprit, sensations of movement under my skin, feeling incredibly faint and lightheaded, random pains that come and go, I had 3 times in the past year where there was a significant amount of fatty material in my stool, very pruny fingers after only minutes in shower

Testing that's been done and shown negative: brain MRI, every thyroid test they offer, routine CBCs and CMPs, ENT specialist, full autoimmune workup from rheumatologist, multiple EKGs and echocardiogram, Lyme disease, IRON, multiple physical exams, EPLEY maneuvers with no relief, eye exams

Results that were abnormal: had a low vitamin D, neurologist confirmed I have vertigo with eye test but could not find cause, low potassium at the ER that was corrected

I tried being gluten free on my own as a trial, after 1 week I have noticed significant improvement in vision, far less fainty, general well being improved but this comes and goes, had a day that all my symptoms actually disappeared besides some brain fog and I was the happiest Ive been in years (only for them to return later that evening). At this point I have noticed improvements but my brain has tons of pressure and I feel quite out of it, laying down flat seems to help these symptoms some. I took a B12 randomly one day and it helped a lot but briefly.

I really appreciate any insight you all can give me as I feel exhausted as is my family trying to figure out what is causing this. All my doctors have essentially given up on me and tell me I have depression and will need to learn to cope with these symptoms, to seek therapy, and take anti-depressants. I nearly fainted sitting on the chair in a recent visit and the doctor told me I need to get sunlight and try to stop being so depressed. This testing was done at my request but according to the doctor shows I am not at all celiac.

To me both tests look positive, unless I am missing something here, and given the fact that you were 100% gluten-free for at least a week leading up to the test, they likely would have been even higher had you continued eating gluten. I welcome @trents and @GFinDC to weigh in on your results.

Ditto to what Scott said. It is unfortunate that you were already eating gluten-free before the tests as it likely had some moderating effects on the results. The rule of thumb before serum antibody testing is to be consuming at least the equivalent of one slice of wheat bread for 8 weeks. And you have a number of celiac symptoms.

It looks like two positive tests! Luckily, the treatment for celiac disease (strict gluten free diet) doesn’t require a doctor. It sounds like it would be worth trying a strict gluten free diet for six months - knowing that symptoms may go up and down for a while.

I really appreciate your responses! After seeing the results I felt it was obvious I had the antibodies even if it was weak and despite what my doctor has said. Perhaps I can repeat after eating gluten regularly again and see my levels. Thank you guys again and for providing more information

Hi metalhead,

I agree that you may have celiac disease.  Your tests are positive even if the results are low positive.  It looks like you didn't get the full celiac antibodies test though?  The DGP IgG, DGP IgA, serum IgA  and EMA results are missing?  Perhaps those tests weren't done?  We have had people on the forum who only tested positive on IgG antibodies before.  So if that one test, DGP IgG wasn't done, they would not have been diagnosed.

Low vitamin D is typical for some people with celiac.  Also low B vitamins.  Nature Made is a good brand of vitamins to take, and not real $$$.  There are some minerals that tend to be low also, like magnesium, copper and zinc.  You may feel better if you can get a good B complex and a multivitamin and mineral complex.  B-12 is related to nerve health.  

Celiac disease can cause damage to the villi lining of the small intestine.  That damage prevents efficient absorption of nutrients.  So celiacs can be low on various vitamins and minerals.  Taking supplements can help, but with the gut damage they may not be well absorbed.

The gotcha is that without proper nutrient levels it is hard for the body to repair and maintain it's tissues.

My symptoms were almost identical to yours... dizziness, vertigo, stomach problems, concentration problems, virtually non-existent vitamin D levels and very low (but still in normal range) for most other vitamins. I had a slightly "higher" positive blood test result than you, but doctor still said it was a weak positive. Similar to you, I did the vestibular therapy (epley maneuvers), neuro workup, vision correction, etc etc, and loads of other testing which was all normal. Eventually, got the endoscopy done and it came back positive for celiac disease. Ended up on some super high-dose vitamin supplements for awhile, but now I just take a multi-vitamin and extra vit D and I test in the normal ranges every time.

The ONLY thing that has helped has been the gluten-free diet. To be honest, even if they told me I did not have celiac disease, I would continue on the gluten-free diet because I feel normal again. I don't stare into space with glazed eyes or have dizzy spells anymore. It's like night and day. If it works for you and you feel better, that's all the evidence you need.

If you feel you do want confirmatory testing, beg for the endoscopy. I also have GERD and that was how I eventually got it approved by insurance, but they "also" took biopsies for celiac...luckily they did because even the GERD has partially resolved since the diagnosis.

      @BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.

      No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

      @Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test.       I have been diagnosed with celiac in 1994, in remission not eating wheat and other foods not to consume  my household eats wheat.I have diagnosed sibo, hernia ibs, high blood pressure, menopause, chronic fatigue just to name a few oh yes and Barrett's esophagus which i forgot, I currently have bumps in back of my throat, one Dr stated we all have bumps in the back of our throat.Im in pain.Standford specialist really dismissed me and now im really in limbo and trying to get properly cared for.I found a new gi and new pcp but its still a mess and medical is making it look like im a disability chaser when Im actively not well I look and feel horrible and its adding anxiety and depression more so.Im angery my condition is affecting me and its being down played

      Wondering if anyone knows whether Lindt chocolate balls are gluten free. The Lindt Canadian website says yes but the Lindt USA website says no. The information is a bit confusing.
