Gluten Free Roommate or Room for Rent in San Diego

Hi everyone!

I'm new here, though I was diagnosed with celiac nearly two decades ago, have been eating gluten free for sixteen years, and started seriously eliminating other sources of gluten in my life about seven years ago.

Now, I'm facing a new challenge. I need to be out of my place here in Jacksonville, Florida at the end of this month. I thought it would be a good opportunity to finally move back to my hometown of San Diego, California. The problem is, San Diego is prohibitively expensive, so at nearly 50, I find myself in need of either a roommate, or someone with a guest suite/granny flat/ADU to rent relatively inexpensively. That's tricky not only because of my age, but because I need either a gluten free household, or a gluten free roommate (plus smoke free, vape free, and cat free for other health reasons).

I've asked my friends and family, both online and off, and posted to roommate finder groups and gluten free groups on places like Facebook. I thought I would try here, too. Is anyone seeking a gluten free roommate or tenant for the San Diego area, or do you know of someone who is? Your help would be appreciated!

Jules

Hi. Im dan. 44 years old. I am celiac. So i need to live in a gluten free environment to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I dont mind living in san diego because my daughter lives in menifee. Whenever i get accidently glutened, i get shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and itchy rashy skin. And thats why i reached out to u because i geel only another celiac could understand my experience. I work a lot and my credit score is 791 and im a rideshare driver so i passed 2 background checks with lyft and uber... Even if u dont want to be roommates, i am a fellow celiac that u could share your experiences through conversation, if u ever need someone to talk to

Welcome to the forum, Dan!

If I may offer an internet safety tip, it's never a good idea to post contact information which will be viewable to the online public. There are too many evil people out there who can use it to do harm to you in one way or another. This forum, as do most online communities, has a PM (Personal Message) tool that interested people can contact you through if they need more information. They can just right click on your forum user name and it is in a menu that pops up. I hope something works out for you soon.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
