What is known about any connection between celiac disease and disorders of the heart? I happen to have serious heart condition and its worsening with time. I am hoping that gluten-free will help it, but if theres no connetion it probably wont. BTW anyone know if chronic fatague is a sympton of heart disease?

Can you be more specific? What is the nature of your heart disease? Is it plaque build up in the cornonary arteries? Congestive heart failure? Enlarged heart? Some kind of arythmia? Bad valves?

I haven't heard of any connection between heart disease and celiac disease but I wonder if the nutrient malaborption which is part of celiac disease could come into play indirectly here.

Sure, did not want to depress anyone thoguh.. I have a left bundle branch block with an ejhection faction that is slowly falling off. Presenlty I am at 44%, when the bottom end of safe is 55%. No known cause.

Wow! How long have you had the problem? Does this kind of thing run in your family that you know of?

I am so sorry Vincent. I would assume that if your blockage is that much, that it would affect your oxygen, which would definately make you very tired. <<<<<<<<<<<HUGS>>>>>>>>>>>. I don't know if Celiac would cause this or not. I have a minor blockage in my groin and in my heart, but mine was caused by a very rare pneumonia that I had about 6 years ago.

Vincent, my son had open-heart surgery when he was 2 because of an anomolous muscle bundle. It was apparently caused when his ventricular septal defect closed on its own--the jet of blood going through it as it narrowed irritated tissue on the opposite side, and the muscle bundle formed as a sort of scar tissue response (but made of muscle fibers,not scar tissue).

He was very tired before the surgery--he went back to 2 naps a day, and was in the 10th percentile for weight until after the surgery.

Is surgery an option for you?

Sorry about your condition. My daughter has pulmonary atresia which is a congenital heart defect. She's undergoing her second heart surgery this summer with Dr. Davis Drinkwater at Vandy (he recently transferred to another Nashville hospital, but they're letting him come back to complete her repair). She used to be very tired, but is doing so much better now that she's gluten free. I have found a paper that supports a connection between congenital heart defects and celiac by Dr. Fasano. I asked Dr. Reidel (I think you said he's your son's GI) at Vandy earlier this month about it and he said it's like saying most people with blue eyes have blond hair. He's not aware of any connection. I now think that I too have celiac disease. I constantly wonder what could have happed during gestation to have caused her defect. I wonder if it could have been that I was not absorbing nutrients correctly and caused this. There is no found link between this and heart defects, but you know how the mind wanders. My father has a number of heart issues (not congenital) and had open heart surgery and stays very tired. If you do need to consult with a surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. Drinkwater. He's amazing.

Unknown. If not for a random EKG 2 years ago prbly still be unknown.

Thanks for all the knidd words everyone... Sounds like at least the fatigue could be sympton.

Your heart has 2 major nerve bundles that control each side of the heart. When its time for the left side of the heart to beat, the signal is sent via the bundle on the left to tell the muscle to contract, and similar on the right. Well, thats how it works with normal healthy hearts at least. The ones that control the left side of my heart are "blocked", and that means no signal to beat can get to the left side of the heart via the nerve. Fortunily the body is designed with a back up system. The signal is route via the nerve on the right side, and travels to the left side via the muscles. This is not as good of a system, so the heart does not function as well in this setup, but with out it the heart would not function at all.

Only treatment i know of is a pacemaker. I will know more after I see my cardio doc in April.

No heart trouble in my blood line family that I know of. Well my father has high blood pressure, but he is over wieght too so thats probly the cause.

      It's like a double edged sword.......we do one thing to improve a problem and cause another problem. I'd like to think the ultimate cure might be something that would train or modify the body to prevent the damage that gluten causes.

      You might try Heallix. It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball. It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again, not in your eyes or ears. Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also, I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out...

      Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease.       Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

      Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress ...

My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

      I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
