Rash

Hello, all. Although I am very strict about my gluten-free diet, I get rashes behind my knees. When I have them biopsied, the dermatologist reports they are bug bites. I don’t agree with this diagnosis as these are like blisters with fluid inside. Does anybody else deal with this? I was diagnosed with Celiac two years ago with positive blood work and the endoscopy.

Welcome to the forum, Ellen!

If they were bug bites, why would they only show up behind the knees? From your description of the bumps, it sounds like it could very well be dermatitis herpetiformis  ("DH"), a rash whose only known cause is celiac disease. When a biopsy is done for DH, my understanding is that the tissue samples need to be taken from between the bumps, not on them. Many dermatologists don't know anything about DH and so either don't biopsy them correctly or don't know what tests to order.

Thank you so much for this. I am truly racking my brain to think of where I could have ingested gluten. I am so careful-the rash is a real setback.

In addition to what trents has posted above, it can take 2 years or more to recover from dermatitis herpetiformis. Your rash could also be something else such as weeping eczema or an allergic reaction.

Ellen, it might be wise to go back to your dermatologist armed with new information and request another biopsy done correctly. Or, seek out another dermatologist who is competent to perform a biopsy correctly.

Thank you! This is great. I take Pure Encapsulations for my multi, magnesium, and Vit K (I forgot to mention I also take that). My doctors have prescribed all of the supplements for various things in addition to nutritional deficencies - migraines, low bone density). I will have them take a look at my multi vitamin though to make sure there isn't excessive overlap, and I will ask about getting tested for these other B vitamins. Kim

It's actually something I cannot find locally at all due to my more rural location.  I can also not find it at Walmart, Costco, or Sam's Club where I have looked when we have traveled.  So many nut options have added oil now.  Ordering online is my only option at this point.

I would be surprised if anyone could taste the difference--salted dry roasted almonds should not be hard to find. As mentioned in my last post, nuts.com may not be for you if you are avoiding peanuts.

Has anyone taste tested the nuts from Nuts.com and Tierra Farm?  I'm looking for salted, dry roasted almonds with nothing else added.  Most brands add peanut or canola oil.

Welcome back! It sounds like you’ve been navigating a lot, but it’s encouraging to hear that your last IVIg cycle brought some improvement in vision and ataxia—fingers crossed that continued treatment helps even more over time. The phlebitis must be frustrating, though; hopefully, your care team can find a solution (maybe a different IV site, slower infusion rate, or even a port if needed). On the gluten front, I hear your discouragement about eating out. Even tiny exposures can keep antibody levels elevated, especially with celiac or severe gluten sensitivity. It might be worth trying a strict "home-only" phase for a few months to see if your AGA IgA drops further—then you’ll know for...
