Fatty Liver W/Scarring

Hi,

I have been a Celiac for 5 years. Before Celiac, I was always a good weight and active. After Celiac, I was sick for a long time. I'm not a huge eater and eat healthy most of the time. I was just recently diagnosed with fatty liver with grade 2 scarring.

I am over weight but not a lot and no matter what I do, I just gain weight. Have any of you experienced this and what did you do? Thank you 😊

Welcome to the forum, @Brightstar101!

Please don't get offended at this question but I would like to ask if you are serious about eating 100% gluten free since diagnosis?

Apart from that, thiamine supplementation can be therapeutic in arresting non alcoholic fatty liver disease: https://journals.biologists.com/dmm/article/14/3/dmm048355/237831/High-dose-vitamin-B1-therapy-prevents-the

Which makes one wonder if the problem can be caused by poor thiamine assimilation from the diet.

Thank you for your reply! Yes, we are 100 percent a gluten free household and I do not eat out so I learned my lesson with this 2 years in. Maybe, we have trouble absorbing Thiamine just like B12 and D. I will look into this 😊

Besides supplementation, are you getting regular exercise? You may also want to look into low carb or pleo diets, as they can help with weight loss.

Hi,

Thanks for your comment! I have tried everything under the sun and besides not eating, the scales will not budge! I do exercise but that doesn't do anything either. I wasn't like this until I was diagnosed with Celiac 5 years ago. I do take B12 injections, Vitamin D sublingual but it still stays low. I wonder if I'm still not absorbing right even though I have been completely gluten-free for years!

I haven’t had any noticeable reactions to salt so I will continue using it. I think I just freaked out when I realized this but it doesn’t cause me any discomfort- so thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.

@plumbago They appear as boils. They are big, like the size of a nickel--quarter, and they hurt when I touch them. I have gone to the same derm for them over and over and she thinks my body is colonized by a bacteria, but even after using hibiclens all over my body they come back.

Welcome to the gluten-free community! It’s great to have you here. While gluten sensitivity or celiac disease can indeed cause skin issues, such as dermatitis herpetiformis (a blistering rash), abscesses in areas like the lower buttocks or thighs are less commonly linked directly to gluten. However, chronic abscesses could be a sign of an underlying immune or inflammatory condition, which might be worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Some people with gluten-related disorders also experience secondary issues like bacterial overgrowth or immune dysregulation, which could potentially contribute to recurrent infections. It’s always a good idea to explore all possible causes, including gluten sensitivity, with your doctor. In the meantime, keeping a food and symptom diary might help identify any patterns. Wishing you the best on your health journey!

You say you have gluten sensitivity? Have you been officially diagnosed with celiac disease or do you refer to NCGS?
