I have that bladder problem though that started at the same time. Can candida leak into the bladder and damage it?

Was it a bladder infection that you had?? Candida can cause bladder infections...it can cause a wide array of symptoms or conditions.

Here is a site with a symptom list for Candida.

Rachel what do you eat on your diet? It would help give me ideas as to what to eat. Right now I am surviving off of buckwheat cereal, beans, sliced turkey meat, red potatoes, sometimes pear and apples, almond butter, chicken soup homemade which consists of, brown rice pasta, butternut squash, yellow sqash, green zucchini, avacado okra, peas, and I think thats it. I have tried the yeast free gluten free seed bread made with white rice flour and stuff but it gets my guts all bubbly.

Trust me....you do not want to know what I eat on my diet.

I dont follow any typical candida diet....its more of a "survival" diet. I eat only a handful of foods. I'm pretty much intolerant to everything....including the foods that I do eat.

I cant take enzymes or most supplements because I react to them. I'm pretty much a "universal reactor" at this point. I'm pretty sure its from the mercury poisoning and candida and I cant get rid of candida until I get rid of the mercury....which is gonna be a slow process.

I just eat the few foods that only produce mild symptoms. I cant eat vegetables....except a few frozen ones....nothing fresh. Most people dont have this severe of a problem. You should be able to eat vegetables.

As mentioned already most of the foods you're eating will also feed Candida. A candida diet sucks but it can really reduce symptoms when followed.

Vegetables are good but not the starchy ones....potatoes are definately out. Beans and pasta are definately out. Yeast free bread still feeds candida. High carb foods feed it as well as fruits. These are sugars and they allow the infection to thrive.

If your turkey meat is processed its probably not the best choice.

A candida diet is mainly fresh vegetables, meat, eggs, plain yogurt (if you can tolerant dairy).

A good brand of probiotics and enzymes can help alot.

I still say the leaky fillings are not a good thing. Alcoholism is obviously not good either. Alcohol is totally forbidden when treating candida....its probably one of the worst things you can consume if you've got candida.

The leaky fillings could totally set you up for an explosion of candida issues. :(

I would like a list of Lyme docs in my area.

I cant access my list of LLMD's....the link is not working. :(

Carla...if you have a list can you send it to me??

What do ya think??

Out of the choices I like either mitsubishi. Hubby prefers the spyder.

This is a fascinating topic. We have a history of problems with cysts in my family on both sides. My mother had a hysterectomy due to cysts when she was in her 30s, and her mother had one at 36, and many of my mother's cousins had hysterectomies for the same reason. My grandmother on the other side of the family had everything out at 26. The odds are not in my favor.

NoGluGirl, I'm hoping that your awareness and persistance to find the root of what is causing the problems will put the odds in your favor!

Welcome Lisa!

It does sound like you have Candida and probably leaky gut syndrome. Antibiotics can really wreak havoc on your intestines. You are not alone there, as I think most of us have taken antibiotics and it's done damage to our intestines. I'm pretty sure I had leaky gut syndrome, and I think several of us here have it as well. Candida can contribute to leaky gut, as well as antibiotics, NSAIDs, other intestinal pathogens, environmental toxicity (i.e. mercury), and who knows whatever else! Healing the gut takes months to years, so be prepared to be in this for the long haul. The bright side is that your overall health will be so much better!

Others know more about Candida here than I do. My problem is bacterial in nature, not fungal, but some of the same principles apply. Start out slow on the probiotics, and work up to more. You'll know if you take too many probiotics initially, as you'll get digestive upset symptoms, like gas and maybe diarrhea. I also started making my own kefir (similar to yogurt) and this has been helping me too.

You might be interested in the BioSET treatment that some of us are doing. It's pretty much cleared all my food intolerances, though I still am not taking chances on gluten!

Dear Lisa,

Something else you may not know...alcoholism can be caused by an overgrowth of yeast! Candida craves carbohydrate, sugar, fermented foods, etc. because it feeds it. You can crave these things because the yeast is hungry! Alcoholism is something many people do not realize is a physical illness, not just a chemical dependency. My grandfather and great-grandfather struggled with alcohol addiction. Low levels of serotonin are also to blame for this.

Dear Rachel,

Hopefully there is someone in this area for LLMD. It is worth a shot! If Carla gets the list to you, PM me! I would greatly appreciate it. I am making a list of all the testing I need, and the conditions that could be the trouble. It is pretty long.

Dear Claire,

Thank you so much for the encouragement! Dealing with these health issues daily is emotionally difficult. Of course, you guys all understand. I have always had a feeling I would not be able to have children of my own. I would not want to give them this disease anyway. However, a bigger concern is the misery hysterectomies often result in.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

Yes, I bought the lemon flavored packets and mix them with plain kifir.

I also take Theralac and Ultra Flora.

If you already have a candida overgrowth, then you might want to start out SLOWLY!!! The VLS#3 has 450 billion bacteria in it!! That's about 450 times as much as other probiotics!

Laura, how are the antibiotics going? I'm still totally wiped out from mine. I was playing my flute at Mass Sunday ... I always go sit with my family for the Gospel and homily, then go back and play. Last week I stayed with the family for the rest of Mass because I just couldn't handle it. I'm totally wiped out.

Carla

I am starting and probably staying on 1 packet per day. I got the unflavored kind. I am also on threelac and Metagenix ultra flora IB (this i have been on forever). It sounds like the VSL is really great stuff so I hope I can tolerate it. Have you noticed any improvement or effects of it.

Laura-

I am so sorry to hear you are having such a rough time- hopefully you will go into one of your good phases soon and all the treatments you are getting will start to pay off.

Nopers...I drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse. :P

Other girls wear baseball hats too..:lol:

I almost bought a mustang though....I had to decide between Eclipse and Mustang and the Eclipse won out cuz of better gas mileage (I was communting) and I liked the looks of it. I'm due for a new car again.

I still like Mustangs and Eclipses but I'm not crazy about the new body styles for either car. <_< People always wanna buy my car cuz its the old body style before they started making changes. If they still had this body style I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat.

I cant get a new car until I get better from chemical sensitivities...the stupid formaldahyde would probably kill me.

I've been looking online though...dunno why....by the time I'm better these cars will probably have changed yet again.

What do you guys think??

Mustang or Eclipse??

I think I like the Eclipse better....I'm probably in the minority but I just dont like the looks of the new mustang....then again I didnt like the last body style at first and now I love it.

Donna, this is my car....its silver...identical to the one in the pic.

If you see a girl with a cap driving this car....it definately could be me. :)

Ha, get the spyder, lol. :P I like the body style the best. What's up with the bubble look in cars these days, lol. I drive a silver Honda Civic. I'll be needing a new one in a couple of years...my commute is much shorter than yours, but it's still plenty enough to wear out cars, especially the way I drive.

Ohhh....this is the one I really want. I think the Eclipse looks sort of "bubbly" now but its a heck of alot more appealing as a Spyder.

However, despite me addressing my concern, she ate three cream horns today! :o I would like a list of Lyme docs in my area. I would be surprised if there are any here. I know one thing, I would not go to IU Med again in Indy, they nearly killed me when I was there before!

P.S. You are welcome Carla! I know what you mean, my brain does not want to read long paragraphs either.

I live in Ohio and fly to NY. There is also an LLMD in Missouri. No one in Indiana. I don't have the list, I'm sure Rachel will get the info to you. Missouri is probably the closest to you.

This morning I had to read a long paragraph, so I took a bookmark and put it under each line so I could read them. My brain just won't do it right now ... it's bugging me because I used to be an avid reader.

On the message boards, if something's longer than 4 lines without a break, I just skip that post. It's usually not worth the trouble of getting the bookmark!

Hopefully, this will get back to normal after a few more months!

I LOVE my Mini Cooper. :) I will probably replace it with another one! :o BMW's service is wonderful ... I had a blowout on the freeway (I have "tire insurance) on a Sunday, they sent out a towtruck (run flat tires, no spare), towed me to the dealer, gave me a MINI to use till mine was fixed. Last time it was in for regular maintenance I got a BMW to drive.

Alcoholism is obviously not good either. Alcohol is totally forbidden when treating candida....its probably one of the worst things you can consume if you've got candida.

I've always wondered whether alcoholics all suffer from candida problems and crave the alcohol rather than sugar. I've never met an active alcoholic who eats a lot of sugar, but they have the cravings for the alcohol that someone with candida has for sugar. I'd bet if an alcoholic treated candida, they'd have an easier time quitting.

Don't feel that way at all. I have six kids (one's adopted) and they are very healthy. Two of them avoid gluten, but neither gets a major reaction from it, they just feel better off it.

As far as the Lyme, all my kids know they've been exposed. PLUS, they've all also been exposed to TICKS. Anyone can get a tickbite! As long as they keep their immune systems strong, they should be healthy. I was healthy for most of the 30++ years I've had this.

I showed NO symptoms at all till I was 19, except for a little fatigue in high school (which may have just been normal). I was exposed when I was 9. Then I've had flare-ups where I felt really, really bad, but most of my life, I've felt good.

I'd rather exist with this disease than not exist at all. :P And, once I get it under control, I'm going to work very hard to keep it there! At the first sign of symptoms, I'll know what to do, I won't have to wait to figure out what it is next time.

The VSL has many more bacteria than the others, so if you feel bad at first, you may want to use a half packet at a time. Seems I read to do that somewhere. I mix it with kifir.

hi donna

thank you for the links to the site

unfortunately i can't have most of the vegetables like, tomatoes, leeks , aspargus, broccoli, onion, bell peppers, and more because of my bladder and it will affect it and make it hurt. So I don't know. Is zucchini o.k. to eat since this doesn't affect my bladder. I am so confused. I don't think eggs are good for me either because they make my nose run. Go figure.

You're welcome. Zucchini should be fine as far as the candida diet. Wish I could eat it, lol. I have so many intolerances now, I'm slightly better off than Rachel...mine don't cause horrific immediate reactions, they are stealthy and cause delayed reactions and seem to have a cummulative affect. The only veggies I'm eating now are broccoli, brussells sprouts and green beans. Fortunately I can eat tomatoes in small quantities. I think I could probably handle asparagus too...don't know, haven't tried in a while. The only meats are beef and turkey. :( The only fats I can have are olive oil and a little coconut oil. So, there you have it, my diet. Eggs used to give me problems too, but this "allergy" treatment a few of us are trying has allowed me to eat them again (pretty sure anyway), along with a little garlic.

NoGluGirl Contributor

Dear Carla,

Thanks for the info. I will go on LymeNet and check it out. I will post and see what happens.

I am not surprised there are no LLMDs here. The reading large paragraphs is an issue for me, too.

As far as kids go, maybe one day. I could always adopt if not. I would not mind. It is nice to have your own if you can, but with my health issues, I fear passing them on. I would not want to bring this on my children.

Dear Lisa,

I think zucchini is safe! There are certain things that your body can tolerate, and certain things it cannot. We all are different, except maybe for gluten and/or casein. This can get frustrating.

Still, healing is a process, and we must put effort forth. Otherwise, we will have bad health forever!

Dear Donna,

I put those sites in my favorites. I already had the Yeast Connection, but not the other one.

It never hurts to have more information and resources! It can be exhaustive and overwhelming reading all you cannot have. I am easing into this the best I can.

Sincerely,

Lisa,

If you have real bad Candida you could easily become very sensitive to molds as well as yeasts. This is what happened to me and I always get worse trying to eat veggies. After finally learning it was from molds I am now eating frozen vegies with much better luck.

I cant eat any sulfur foods so that leaves out things like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, brussel sprouts, garlic....basically all the "cruciferous vegetables". I dont eat mushrooms because its a fungus....not good for candida situation.

I'm doing great with the frozen foods as long as they're not the ones I just listed. I could never eat these fresh so its definately the mold for me.

I found this out from the treatments I go to....it was showing I have major problems with mold.....the foods I am *most* reactive to (besides gluten) are foods containing alot of mold.

Molds will aggravate the candida....if your sensitive to molds it could trigger the candida and cause your bladder to get irritated (if candida is causing the bladder problems to begin with).

The leeks, onions, broccoli, asparagus and especially eggs are all high in sulfur....do you get bloating and/or gas when you eat these foods?? That could indicate a problem with sulfur. I have major problems with these foods.

Its sort of accumulative but it only takes a day or two of eating these foods to cause me to start feeling really bad. If I'm already feeling bad a single serving of one of these foods will cause a more immediate and obvious reaction.

Rachel--24 Collaborator

ROFL!!

Donna....what are you trying to say??

I'm thinking horrific might be a little extreme....even for me.

I'm thinking more along the lines of HEINOUS....my reactions are a true heinosity. :P

Horrific = scary and visible to others (who become horrified witnessing the reaction) :o

Heinous= tortuous and painful and not visible to anyone (witnesses to the reaction think I am perfectly fine....or possibly crazy)

Guess what...

Yesterday I posted about new cars and today my car BROKE on the way to Whole Foods!!

I think it might be sign. :P

My car overheated...it started smoking....the needle was all the way to HOT. I called AAA....got it towed....will find out more tomorrow. I think the radiator hose broke or something.

My car needs maintenance....I've put over 200,000 miles on it and its only a "99. I've neglected it since I've been sick. :(

I would totally buy the Spyder but I dont wanna have a car payment until I get everything squared away with my health. I keep saving because I dont know how much its gonna cost me to get my health back....I worry something else will come up.

If nothing else comes up at least I'll have saved plenty of money for my Spyder. :)

Since my car is broke....tomorrow I will not be able to come home for lunch.....I will have to PACK a lunch!!! :o:o

Dear Rachel,

Sorry to hear about your car. Machines can be something that drives you crazy. Oh God I miss pizza too! Does anyone know a good widely available gluten- free casein- free soy cheese? I bought a caramel bar from the neighborhood kids today. I cannot eat it, despite how bad I am craving it. So, I gave it to Dad. I just could not say no to kids!

My car is a 1996 Chevy Cavalier named "The Groovy Ruby". It has done pretty well considering its age. However, I know it may not last much longer. Once they get to be this age, that is when things go wrong. Hopefully, it will do okay until I get another car.

Sincerely,

Thank you all for your advice and the dermatitis herpetiformis article. The latter made me realise I had stopped taking my antihistamine, which I will restart today. The Dapsone has cleared the rash entirely but I still get quite a bit itching, absolutely nothing to see though. I know its notoriously hard to clear and its still relatively early days for me.  The iodine issue is very interesting. I do eat quite a bit of salt because I have Addison's disease and sodium retention is an issue. I also have autoimmune hypothyroidism, not sure how a low iodine diet would play into that? Because of my Addison's I am totally steroid dependent, I take steroids 4 x daily and cannot mount any defence against inflammation. I need to increase my meds for that. Now that I know what is wrong I can do just that if Im having a bad day. Life is very sweet, just so damn complicated sometimes! Hey ho, onwards. Thank you again for your advice.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you
