I've been gluten free for about two months now, i immedietly went gluten free when i found out i had Celiac Disease. And right away started feeling better, sleeping better, and even my depression felt under control.

But now two months later i feel just as sick as i was before the past two weeks or so.

I'm right back to not sleeping and being exhausted.

I just don't understand what's happening, and i'm starting to get discouraged!

Anyone have any advice or suggestions?

Ronnie, fear not, you're not alone. My son started to feel better too right after he started the diet. And now, almost 9 months into the diet, his stomach hurts often when he eats. We're totally gluten-free (we don't even eat out). I don't know what this is. It's so frustrating.

Anyway, maybe you're still healing and may have periods where you just don't feel well. Hang in there.

The exact thing happened to me, and I can't tell you how many times I've read this same scenario on this board. I felt unbelievably fantastic for the first 3 - 4 weeks, and just plummetted (I do also have an inordinate amount of stress in my life currently, but still...). Fear not, you will feel better! I have been on the upswing the last few weeks and am doing so much better. It really does take time, hang in there, there are peaks and valleys in the initial healing phase, I think. It took our bodies a long time to get this way, it isn't an overnight cure. I must also tell you that I had to go on an antidepressant again - first Wellbutrin, a disaster for me, and then Effexor, which has helped enormously. One day, I hope to be free of all meds of that sort, but it will take time.

The other thing I didn't know at the beginning is that I was dairy-intolerant, as many Celiacs are - at least initially. The tips of the villi manufacure lactase, and if you have no villi, as I do not, there is no lactase. My stomach, after ingesting dairy, stuck out and ached as if I were six months pregnant. Celiacs may be able to eat dairy again after intestinal healing, FYI. But, removing dairy helped enormously also.

Just keep at it and make sure you've eliminated ALL gluten - from products you use to hidden gluten in foods. It will get better!!

It can take awhile and there are some ups and downs for most of us dont lose heart. Are you taking gluten-free vitamins, you may want to if your not and a sublingual gluten-free B12 can help a great deal with energy levels and fatigue. Make sure your toiletries are gluten-free and watch out for cross contamination. I hope you feel better soon.

I'm going through the same thing right now. I felt great for about a month and now I feel horrible. I'm trying to do everything right, so I don't know what's wrong. I think that the healing process just takes time.

I've got a quick question.

If i've been glutened can i get sick after eating something that's gluten

free? Because i've just realized some things i'm not allowed but had no

idea. I've just cut them out of my diet. But yesterday was the last day i consumed

it. But today after eating a gluten free meal i'm wicked sick. I had to make a dash to the

bathroom.

I seemed to be alright till i ate supper, but i know there was no gluten in my supper!

Hi Ronnie--Yes, it usually takes a period of time for a reaction to run it's course. The time varies with the individual. For instance, recently I was glutened through CC--a product that was marked gluten-free, but was somehow contaminated. I was sick with D, nausea, cramping, etc. for about 5 days. I ate nothing with gluten (after the inital slip-up), but the reaction continued for several days.

      Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

      I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

      Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?
