I WAS JUST DIAGNOSED WITH CELIAC DISEASE LIKE A MONTH AGO (IM 18 YRS OLD). I WENT THREW THE WHOLE BIOPSY STUFF AND NOW I AM ON MY GLUTON FREE DIET. WHICH I SEEM TO BE GETTING USED TOO. ANYWAYS I REALLY ONLY HAVE 2 QUESTIONS.

1. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE BEFORE YOU FEEL BETTER?

2. IN THE FUTURE I DO WANT TO HAVE KIDS...WHATS THE CHANCE I WONT BE ABLE TO IN THE FUTURE? LIKE I KNOW RIGHT NOW SINCE I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT I HAD IT. I MAY BE INFERTILE.

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW, SO IF ANYONE KNOWS THE ANSWER TO MY ??? PLEASE LET ME KNO!!!

Hi Elizabeth, and welcome to this board.

Some people start feeling better within a day of avoiding gluten, and for others it takes up to six months. So, unfortunately, it is impossible to tell what your body will decide to do.

I don't see any good reason why you wouldn't get pregnant when you want to, if you are gluten-free. celiac disease can be a reason for infertility and miscarriages, but ONLY while you eat gluten. So, stay gluten free, and you shouldn't have to worry about it.

Hey babe:

With gluten free new to you, I just wanted to make sure that you have gluten free shampoo, soap, lotions, some makeups....all can make you sick.

I know that someone here, (I am sorry that I cant remember..please forgive me, again) has a newbie kit that will get you started on our road to gluten free.

Also, I cannot to this, but there is a Delfi Forum List that someone can e-mail to you that has a list of gluten free PRODUCTs, by name.

The forum is usually quiet on the weekends.

Post as request for the Delfi Forum Product List and the Newbe Survival Kit and someone will get back to you very soon. That will be the most helpful to you as you are just beginning.

as far as I know infertility caused by celiac should right itself when you are healthy, it's like your body knows you are too sick to carry a child so it revokes that option. If however your infertility is caused by something else, I have no clue.

As far as the newbie survival kit, you should PM nini, it's awesome. I just PM'd her with the subject "newbie survival kit" and in the body put my email address. It was a life saver. :)

Lisa Mentor

Yeah, I thought it was nini, but not sure. Thanks for passing that one.

yep it's me, I can also e-mail the new updated Delphi list as well. (the old Delphi list is part of the newbie survival kit)

rather than PM'ing me (which is fine) you can also e-mail me directly at nisla@comcast.net and put "request newbie survival kit" in the subject.

Maybe, maybe not. There's no real way to tell. I had 3 kids before I found out I had problems with gluten.

possibly yes, but more than likely your Celiac was caught early enough that it hasn't affected that. Not everyone with undiagnosed Celiac is infertile

you got it...

I was supposedly infertile up til I got pregnant with my son. I had severe preclampsia and eclampsia and he was born severly premature. All is well now and he just turned 1. The doc said that my celiacs could have been a direct correlation with my pregnancy problems. I had all types, I was out of work in month 3. At that time though, I didnt know about my celiacs and I was told that I probably could get pregnant and have a normal and healthy pregnancy. I think every case is different. You should talk to your GYN about any concerns with infertility.

I only figured out I have celiac disease at the age of 52, after having five healthy children, and eight miscarriages (my babies were never safe until five months pregnant). So, I had no problem GETTING pregnant on gluten, but rather STAYING pregnant. I just wished the doctors wouldn't be so clueless, having known about celiac disease and being gluten-free would have saved me from a lot of heartache (and I would have twins now, which I always wanted, Susie should have been a twin, I lost one).

So, not everybody with celiac disease will be infertile on gluten, it is just possible. I don't know what the percentages are.

I also had a miscarriage pre-diagnosis. I went through labor and the whole bit at 4 months, but there was no baby. It took me about 2 years to get pregnant again.

my girls can't even touch gluten or they break out.

I hear conflicting advice, some say shampoos don't need to be gluten free because you don't eat them, others say anything you touch needs to be gluten free.

However, if you are having symptoms, and found wheat in your shampoo, I would toss it and get some gluten free shampoo and see if you feel better.

(oh, and check your makeup too, esp. your lipstick, my 4 year old got really sick once because grandma let her wear some lipstick and didn't know it had gluten in it)

Guest nini

I too had several miscarriages BEFORE my dx. My pregnancy with my daughter was also prior to my dx. I did however have an extremely complicated pregnancy and dd was born 6 weeks preterm. I had no problems GETTING pregnant, it was the staying pregnant that was a problem. I bet if I had been strictly gluten-free, I would have had no problems with any of the pregnancies.

Hi, I just joined and this group is so helpful. I would appreciate that list also. This makeup thing is another challenge. I'm working on make-up and vitamins today. Thanks, LindaLee

Welcome to the forum. If you have been buying gluten-free bread, be sure you do not use the family toaster, but buy a cheap one for yourself. When I was first told that I needed my own toaster (28 months ago), I thought that was overkill. It is not, as the crumbs from glutened bread stay in the toaster and then can get on your bread. Make sure you do not make your sandwiches where regular bread has been, unless you have throughly cleaned that area. I know some on here put paper towels down for theirs. I use a plate, even tho I am using a section of the counter that is designated for me. Do, not use condiments that others have double dipped into as their crumbs can then pass to you. My husband uses a large jelly and I use a small one and that way we know who's is who's. If you have a boyfriend do not kiss him if he has been eating or drinking anything with gluten. He should rinse his mouth throughly. One member on here was still being glutened and she could not figure it out. Then it dawned on her that her husband has a mustache and drank beer. He now rinses before kissing her. Once you get the hang of this, it will all come naturally and easily.

As far as the infertility. I would think you could still get pregnant, but sometimes it is not a healthy pregnacy. You need for your body to heal before you get pregnant and then you should be fine.

Lisa Mentor

Yes,

Check anything that may get into your mouth. I use Dove shampoo and soap, Lubriderm lotion, Crest toothpaste, and burts bees lip glosses and some Clinique. Hope that will get you started.

Two months ago, I started taking Dupixent for dermatitis herpetiformis and it has completely cleared it up. I can't believe it! I have had a terrible painful, intensely itchy rash for over a year despite going fully gluten-free. See if your doctor will prescribe Dupixent. It can be expensive but I am getting it free. When the dermatitis herpetiformis was bad I could not do anything. I just lay in bed covered in ice packs to ease the pain/itching and using way too Clobetasol. Dapsone is also very good for dermatitis herpetiformis (and it is generic). It helped me and the results were immediate but it gave me severe anemia so the Dupixent is better for me. Not sure if it works for everyone. I cannot help with the cause of your stress but from experience I am sure the severe stress is making the celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis worse. Very difficult for you with having children to care for and you being so sick. Would this man be willing to see a family therapist with you? He may be angry at you or imagine that your illness is a psychosomatic excuse not to take care of him. A therapist might help even if he won't go with you. Also do you have any family that you could move in with (with the kids) for a short time to get away? A break may be good for you both.

@tiffanygosci, Thiamine deficiency is a thing in pregnancy for "normal" people, so it's exponentially more important for those with celiac disease and malabsorption issues. I studied nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology because I was curious what the vitamins were doing inside the body.  See my blog.  Click on my name to go to my page, scroll to drop down menu "activities" and select blog.   So glad you're motivated to see the dietician!  We're always happy to help with questions.  Keep us posted on your progress!

Thank you for sharing all of this, Knitty Kitty! I did just want someone to share some commonality with. I did not know This one Deficiency was a thing and that it's common for Celiac Disease. It makes sense since this is a disorder that causes malabsorption. I will have to keep this in mind for my next appointments. You also just spurred me on to make that Dietician appointment. There's a lot of information online but I do need to see a professional. There is too much to juggle on my own with this condition.<3

I think your initial idea, eat gluten and be tested, was excellent. Now you have fear of that testing, but isn’t there also a fear each time you eat gluten that you’re injuring your body? Possibly affecting future fertility, bone health and more? Wouldn’t it be better to know for sure one way or the other? If you test negative, then you celebrate and get tested occasionally to make sure the tests don’t turn positive again. If you test positive, of course the recommendation from me and others is to stop gluten entirely.  But if you’re unable to convince yourself to do that, could a positive test at least convince you to minimize your gluten consumption?  Immune reactions are generally what is called dose response, the bigger the dose, the bigger the response (in this case, damage to your intestines and body). So while I am NOT saying you should eat any gluten with a positive test, the less the better.

@Riley., Welcome to the forum, but don't do it!  Don't continue to eat gluten!  The health problems that will come if you continue to eat gluten are not worth it.  Problems may not show up for years, but the constant inflammation and nutritional losses will manifest eventually.  There's many of us oldsters on the forum who wish they'd been diagnosed as early.    Fertility problems, gallbladder removal, diabetes, osteoporosis and mental health challenges are future health issues you are toying with.   To dispel fear, learn more about what you are afraid of.  Be proactive.  Start or join a Celiac group in your area.  Learn about vitamins and nutrition.   Has your mother been checked for Celiac?  It's inherited.  She may be influencing you to eat gluten as a denial of her own symptoms.  Don't let friends and family sway you away from the gluten-free diet.  You know your path.  Stick to it.  Be brave.
