Italian Cookies

We recently had my counsins confirmation party and my aunt went to a bakery in Summit, NJ for the cake. She asked the baker if they serve anything that might be gluten free. The baker in turn asked if this was for a person with Celiac Disease. She said that their is a family of Celiacs in town that shop there. She said that pinyoly cookies (I am sure I did not spell that correctly, my Italian grandmother is probably shaking her finger at me :P ) are gluten free because they are made with almond paste and not flour. She also said they happen to make a flourless chocolate cake. I never thought to look in a bakery for gluten free food. Just thought I would pass this on.

Nicole

True! Pignoli cookies are gluten-free by their very nature! Here's a recipe: Open Original Shared Link

I personally wouldn't eat them from the bakery though because cc is a guarantee with all that loose flour flying around...

Speaking of italian cookies...Does anyone know of a recipe for half moon/black & white cookies? I had a gluteny one from a "NY" deli here and it was gross. I miss my half moons from Syracuse :(

Anytime we go to Syracuse, we have to bring a dozen back for my older son! The ones from Syr. are unlike any we've had anywhere else. Harrison Bakery made the BEST halfmoons! ;)

Mmmmm....Harrison.....

You know, I could just eat my way from Westcott St. down to Armory Square. Start at Dorians and make my way down to Pastabilities...

Of course, all of that is full of gluten <_<

I don't have a recipe, but I enjoyed the black & white cookies from the gluten-free bread basket in Chester NY (www.gfbreadbasket.com). It was actually kind of funny, because my mom had gone shopping there for me. All I really wanted was some bagels (Mom was coming to watch me compete at a gymnastics meet for college, so it's not like I had access to a freezer to store the stuff in). But when my mom got there, she's lugging a mini-refrigerator (it can hold like 6 cans of soda). She'd gone to the bakery, got my bagels, saw peanut butter cookies (I'm not a cookie/dessert person, but my dad makes the best PB cookies, and that's something I cannot resist!), so she got them. Then she got some muffins. And then the woman that owns the bakery said that she couldn't possibly leave without a black and white cookie.... all college students love them. So into the bag went one of those! The black and white cookie was a good replacement for the ones I remember getting in the supermarket as a little kid, one of the best gluten-free cookies I've tasted.

Unfortunately, the cookie is not listed on their website, but I'm sure if you email/call them, they'd figure something out. I don't remember that being a specialty item! And I have to say, their PB cookies taste like the real deal.... it's a good thing my gymnastics coach doesn't care what we eat. I ate soooo many cookies that night ! haha. But come on, it was the first cookies I'd had in I don't know how long!

Daughter has started gluten free diet this week as per gastroenterologists suggestion. However says she feels more tired and like she’s been hit by a train. I suggested it could be the change to gluten free or just stress from the endoscopy last week catching up with her. Just wondering if feeling more tired is a normal reaction at this stage. I suppose it’s possible some gluten might have been present without realising. Have tried to reassure her it’s not going to resolve symptoms overnight

Looking for help sourcing gluten-free products that do not contain potato or corn derived ingredients. I have other autoimmune conditions (Psoriatic Arthritis and Sjogrens) so I’m looking for prepared foods as I have fatigue and cannot devote a lot of time to baking my own treats.

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's completely understandable to feel frustrated, stressed, and disregarded after such a long and difficult health journey. It's exhausting to constantly advocate for yourself, especially when you're dealing with so many symptoms and positive diagnoses like SIBO, while still feeling unwell. The fact that you have been diligently following the diet without relief is a clear sign that something else is going on, and your doctors should be investigating other causes or complications, not dismissing your very real suffering.

It is just so sad that health care in the United States has come to this.  Health insurance should be available to everyone, not just the healthy or the rich.  My heart goes out to you.  I would not hesitate to have the test and pay for it myself.  My big concern would be how you could keep the results truly private.  I am sure that ultimately, you could not.  A.I. is getting more and more pervasive, and all data is available somewhere.  I don't know if you could give a fake name, or pay for your test with cash.  I certainly would not disclose any positive results on a private insurance application.  As I understand it, for an official diagnosis, an MD needs to review your labs and make the call.  If you end up in the ER, or some other situation, just request a gluten free diet, and say it is because you feel better when you don't eat gluten.      Hang in there, though.  Medicare is not that far away for you, and it will remove a lot of stress from your health care concerns.  You will even be able to "come out of the closet" about being Celiac!

Yes, I've posted a few times about two companies: Request a Test and Ulta Labs. Also, pretty much we can all request any test we want (with the possible exception of the N protein Covid test and I'm sure a couple of others) with Lab Corp (or Pixel by Lab Corp) and Quest. I much prefer Lab Corp for their professionalism, ease of service and having it together administratively, at least in DC. And just so you know, Request a Test uses Lab Corp and Quest anyway, while Ulta Labs uses only Quest. Ulta Labs is cheaper than Request a Test, but I am tired of dealing with Quest, so I don't use them so much.
