Anyone Else With Soy Allergy....

I ate some chick peas (garbanzo beans) for the first time in years yesterday and I had a major asthma attack and I almost passed out. I know it was an allergic reaction. Could I be allergic to other beans because of my soy allergy?

I don't know if it is because of the soy beans but I am allergic (per test) to kidney and navy beans as well.

My hubby is allergic to pinto beans by reaction. He hasn't had any allergy tests done. A doctor we talked to said pinto beans are pretty allergenic.

We still plan on trying garbanzo, black and red beans again and see if we need to leave the whole family or not. (As in bean family) We also want to try lentils again although we don't remember those being a problem.

I'll try to make hummus soon and let you know how we turn out.

Just mentioned this to hubby, he's not sure we even need to try anymore beans.

you might be sensitive to legumes, in that case, chickpeas and soybeans are both from that family.

I just figured out that i am intolerant of ALL legumes- soy, peanuts, beans of any kind so yep, chickpeas would be out for me. i get mostly stomach symptoms and it throws my fibromyalgia pain through the roof but I also noticed I think that they make my mouth burn. I'm not allergic (I was tested) but I'm staying away.

I cannot have chickpeas, soy, and just figured out peas. I can eat green beans but have been afraid to try any other beans, which really isn't that hard for me since I rarely ate them before - only the chickpeas for humus. I sometimes miss them in chili but do without fine.

I am allergic to all beans - highly allergic to soy

(reactions are - asthma attack with

swelling and hives - no fun!)

I just stay away from them all..... which is one

of the many reasons that I rarely eat processed foods! B)

So far, I've only had problems with soy. I hope that you feel better soon, because I know how misrable asthma attacks are.

Thanks. I feel better now. I found I can eat kidney beans.

My son gets real bloated and gassy from soy and other legumes. It'smore of an intolerance for him, but I keep him completely away from it now.

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.
