my hubby was talking to a collegue the other day who mentioned that she was C, my hubby got chatting to her and she mentioned that she had a prob with some canned fish, she worked out that some canned fish have G in them, why? cos fish farms feed the fish there on gluten and it causes probs further down the food chain. she gave him the advice that to allways buy canned fish that is marked WILD.\has anyone heard of this one? it shocked the hell out of me as i eat a lot of canned fish as its so quick.

Doesn't make sense to me. Unless it's added to the canned fish, I don't think it would matter what the fish ate. I usually eat Alaskan salmon, which is wild, when I eat canned fish, but ... still makes no sense to me.

I have seen canned chicken with "wheat starch" listed as an ingredient in addition to the chicken (the brand sold in bulk at Costco in fact). Maybe there are some canned tunas/salmons with the same?

Also, with farmed fish you just never know what you are going to get, so i agree it is best to stick with Wild. But always read labels and check with the company when in doubt.

I haven't found a canned fish that I can eat yet. Tried the health food stuff, just water, wild, etc. still got sick.

I guess I've been lucky ... I eat Kroger brand red salmon. It's wild. Just salmon, water, and maybe salt (I don't have a can in the pantry right now), and it never gives me trouble. I don't like the farmed fish because of the mercury and other toxins.

I do read every label, even on things I would think are gluten-free, so I would have caught additives.

If you're talking tuna, I've seen some cans with "broth", which could easily contain gluten.

As to farmed fish, I would not touch this with a ten foot pole. It is nasty in so many ways, antibiotics, hormones, AND higher heavy metal/pesticide toxicity. I only eat fresh.

sorry, I'm with the others... who would want to eat fish out of a can. But, of course, I'm on the coast, but you can get fresh tuna, salmon everwhere....cannned stuff is aweful.

Oh rub it in why don't you!!! I'm in a land locked state, in the middle in a small town in fact. I have to drive 2 hours at least to get something flown in that day. But I've never had a problem with Chicken of the Sea tuna in water.

Dip them in a scrambled egg and dredge them in cornbread and fry in a hot iron skillet..........oooh too good.

I only eat wild fish and never touch anything thats been farmed. It has nothing to do with gluten....farmed fish is just bad ...period. I'd rather eat fresh fish than anything from a can. Fresh wild fish is the way to go IMO. :)

      @Alibu, Migraines ran in my family as well.  Correcting my Thiamine insufficiency made a dramatic improvement in frequency and duration.   If you take Thiamine, B12 and B6 together, they have analgesic (pain relieving) properties.  Taking thiamine every day has cut down on their occurrence and severity for me.   Take Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide).  These forms get into the brain easily.  Magnesium Threonate gets into the brain easily, too, and helps thiamine work.  My gave a sigh of relief when I first took it, and no migraines. Yes, lowering histamine levels helps one feel better, too.  Vitamin C and B12 help reduce histamine.  A low histamine...

      @ehb   Great you're going to start the AIP diet!  I know it's scary and stressful, but you'll soon start feeling better.  It's a challenge, but you can make it.  Do ask for a Erythrocyte Transketolace test which tests for Thiamine level.   I hope your Vitamin D level is between 70 and 100 nmol/L.  In this optimal range, Vitamin D can act like a hormone and regulate the immune system.  Vitamin D 3 is the form that the body can utilize well.  I was prescribed the synthetic firm D2 and my body didn't like it.  I know getting my Vitamin D up in the eighties made a world of difference to me.  My depression improved and I felt so much better at higher levels.   I prefer Life Extension brand for many vitamins. ...

      @knitty kitty I have an appointment to go over the results tomorrow. Vitamin D was in the normal range. I’ve decided to start the gluten contamination elimination diet, while avoiding nightshades as recommended by the AIP. I am still hoping to get support from a nutritionist or advice from the doctor about supplements to make sure I’m getting enough nutrients. I’m still having a hard time sorting through all of the different brands and possible combinations

      We've definitely all had such thoughts.  But as Scott says, it does get easier with time.  I'm not sure where you are posting from but in England where I live, over the last ten years or so most things I missed at first now have gluten free substitutes.   I still miss Twix bars, and chocolate Penguins (a type of biscuit) but I'm hoping sooner or later someone will create a decent substitute for them! One thing that I remember my husband said to me when I was feeling down one day  was: "Why don't you try to think of all the things you can still eat, rather than the things you can't?"  The list is long, and it did help - sort of!
