Is there a documented connection with hyperemesis and undiagnosed celiac? I'm starting to get the idea that there must be a link from some of the recent posts. I had terrible hyperemesis for the entire pregnancy with all three of my pregnancies (gee, now I understand why I couldn't keep the crackers down!), but nobocy even mentioned the possibility of celiac to me. Anybody?

I was not gluten-free pregs #1 &2, got severe hyperemesis, lost baby #1 at 5 months gestation due to severe dehydration. Was gluten-free for next 2 pregs, still got it, baby went into distress and died due to my dehydration stressing the fetus, this last preg I raised hell and was given a PICC line at 8 weeks along when it started and it was a life saver, she's asleep in my lap right now and I will NEVER get prego again, 4 pregs with hyperemis and 2 babies lost is enough for me.

I just found out about 10 years ago that I had hypermesis when I was pregnant. My son is now 29 years old. At that time I was very ill and almost died a couple of times. I was 40 when I read an article about hypermesis and started to investigate. About 14 years ago I was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue. They hypermesis foundation is doing studies to find out if there is a connection. I had so much nausea and still do today. When I was pregnant I lost 15 pounds in 3 days. I couldn't even drink water without throwing up.

I think there is a definite connection.

Hello everyone,

I just stumbled upon this tonight, so I'm a first-timer here. I had hyperemeis with all five of my pregnancies, resulting in 2 miscarriages and 3 beautiful children. This last one was by far the worst one for me. He is now 22 months old and suspected of celiac due to failure to thrive..blood test showed one panel as positive, so we will be redoing blood work and then having a biopsy done if still positive. I'm reading these posts though about possible link with celiac and hyperemesis....has it ever been the baby with celiac that's growing inside the mom and causing her to be so sick as opposed to the mom having celiac? The second my son was born, I felt great, (in comparison) but the nine months I carried him felt like I had something toxic in my body as I was never so sick and in so much pain before. It literally felt like I had something foreign or toxic that was not supposed to be in there. I'd love to hear your thoughts or stories...

That's how I felt with all three of my pregnancies--evey time I vomited (many times per day), it felt like my body was deperately trying to rid itself of a poison. With the first one (where I refused anti-nausea meds as I was so worried about the side effects), the only thing keeping me from suicide was the fact that I so wanted the baby...REALLY made me rethink the whole abortion issue (I could never get one myself, but I can't see telling someone that they would have to go through 9 months like that when they don't even want the baby, especially if the mom was a rape victim...) Honestly, I had 2 colleagues who, in comparison, just SAILED through chemo for breast cancer, whereas I came home with my first baby 10 pounds UNDER my starting weight.

I had a terrible time with nausea and vomiting both times. I would lose weight during the first few months--moreso with the first pregnancy. I'm not one to throw up--even though I get very nauseous. But when I was pregnant, I threw up several times a day. I missed my grandfather's funeral :( due to the fact that I was so nauseated and never could predict when I would start to vomit. I did try the anti-nausea med from the doctor with the first--it made no difference, and I was nervous about taking anything, so I stopped it. Of course, I ate lots of saltines--not knowing that they were just making matters worse. I'm incredibly lucky to have my 2 sons, and just couldn't go thru another pregnancy again.

Wow I was really sick too. I couldn't move or eat or drink anything. Thankfully my baby survived. I feel for all of you who lost your little ones. That just breaks my heart.

I am now 28 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with Celliacs for over a year...despite the gluten-free diet I have still had hyperemesis from 5 weeks to currently and need anti-nauseau meds to get through the day. I have been admitted probably 7-10 times to the ER for IV fluids and admitted for hospital stays 3 times for re-hydration, nutritional needs. Im really interested in this connection since it seems to be with or without the gluten-free diet for some people.

I had terrible nausea & couldn't keep anything down for several months. When I found out I was expecting twins my first thought was "thank God, I'll never have to do this again!" (I really wanted two kids). The docs thought the extreme sickness was because of the high hormone levels with twins. I was a long way from being diagnosed then. I remember being really scared that the babies would starve. But the nausea did abate finally towards the end & I ate a ton & the boys were fine. They're 19 now!

My heart goes out to those of you who lost your babies.

Hi,

I have had severe hyperemesis. On home IV for four months with both pregnancies and Zofran and prevacid. My third pregancy so severe I terminated my pregancy. They had put a pick line in to far which was hitting my heart. Cardio doctor kept doing X-Rays they told me I had a heart problem. At the time I had a 1 year old daughter and a 3 1\2 old son. The cardio doctor thought terminatiion would be best because they really didn't know what was wrong with my heart. Well as it turns out there was nothing wrong with my heart!! I was a mess.

Now it is four years later, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease almost going on two years now. I have now found out I am 6 weeks pregnant. I have started getting nauseous. My doctor has put me on prevacid and Zofran. I have taken the Zofran and it seems to help. I have read the stories and see Zofran is not gluten-free. I have a temperature 99 and I consisently feel like I have a virus. I am on the gluten-free diet.

Azmon3 you have said you felt like you had something toxic in your body did you take tylenol, vitamin, etc?

I would love any advice you can give me..

I'm almost positive Zofran IS gluten free. I take it when nauseated and it works wonders. I just think that Glaxo-Smith Kline won't say for sure it's gluten free cus' they want to cover their butts, but a lot of us take it and are fine.

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
