Poop

Apologies in advance - this is a total poop post: so after my son had a day of D I figured out that the only possible culprit was cross contamination from the pasta he ate that I made the night before - I made some artichoke fettucine for myself (which I'm pretty sure was wheat-based - and I was even thinking that I should have been eating the rice spaghetti I had, but the artichoke sounded so good for whatever reason) and I drained it first in the colander that I then used to drain his corn/quinoa rotellis - DUH. Anyway, since then his poop has thickened up but is still really yellow color - like mustard. I'm wondering if this is something else, or if this is leftover from the accidental glutening? I've been over it in my head trying to figure out why it should be such a color and I'm drawing blanks...I've been giving him the usual mix of rice, fruit, gluten-free snacks, veggies, etc. - nothing that I can figure would account for the yucky light yellow color. Not that it's anything critical at this point - I mean, as long as it's solid, this mommy's happy - but any ideas? Thanks! ...sorry to be so poop-focused!

Sounds like cc to me! Pale poops are a symptom of celiac...something about not absorbing.

Here are some boo-boos I've made with my 3 and a half year old: :(

Play Dough

Toothpaste

Vitamins

Shampoo (when she chews on her hair)

Chapstick

Lotion (I don't know if sunscreen contains gluten, but it's that time of year, so I guess I better check)

There's also friends and family who can give your child a treat when you're not looking. I'm told the reaction can happen long after ingestion sometimes.

Good luck to you.

Testing done on children is notoriously unreliable. If you are worried, try him on your gluten-free diet. If he gets better, I'd say just keep him gluten-free.

Mechelle,

Thank you for that info. Now that I have a son, it is important for me to know childhood sources of hidden gluten (i.e. playdoe)

Izac's mom,

No need to apologize for a poop post! ;) Everytime I open my son's diaper, his poop is a different color. Tonight (we switched formulas again)...it was green!

Hope your boy is feeling better soon! :)

!!!! TOOTHPASTE!! Man, I learn something new every day here! I had no idea...and here for the past couple days I've been trying to be good about his new teeth & brushing them - hmmm, but I just got the tube and looking at it, I don't seen anything immediately offensive? It's the Doctor Burt's Children's Toothpaste. The ingredients are: Purified water, vegetable glycerin, calcium carbonate (chalk), bentonite (clay), orange oil, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), yucca schidigera extract, beta carotene, xanthan gum. ?

He gets sunscreened when he's in daycare, but I don't think that has an effect since his poop has been OK up until now. I'll check about the playdough, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't use it at daycare.

Thanks for the advice, though. Chapstick - who knew?

-E

Yeah, there's been a lot of controversy on this web site regarding the gluten-free status of Chapstick. From what I've gathered, there have been celiacs who reacted poorly to it, as well as Lipsmackers brand. I'd rather not take risks with my child.

Burt's Bees is said to have a gluten-free lip balm product. We might be safer with that.

An additional boo-boo: just today I was visiting with my husband and realized that we glutened Annie with our Dutch oven when we went camping two weeks ago. Cast iron is porous, so any gluten-containing bacon grease we've used to "season" it in the past is trapped in its pores. I'm still learning! :(

My son went through periods of time when his poop was bright green. I called the GI and he said the color is not a concern just the consistancy. I don't know if that is accurate but that is what he said. I also know that the color has changed for my children when they have had a stomach virus. Any chance of that?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o !!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, what would I do without this board????!?!??!

I've been killing myself trying to figure out what could be bothering him, cause it's been kind of on and off the past week or so, and here I am cooking his meals in a cast iron pan that I more often than not simply wipe out instead of washing. And I cook plenty of gluten stuff in there. OY!

I don't know why I never thought about it before, because I've read on here plenty of times about people having separate dishes, etc. Man oh man, THANK YOU SO MUCH MECHELLE! I feel like such a dope for not realizing what I was doing, but I guess like you said, some of us are still learning!

That is so "funny" that you would say that...that is what I was told by 2 different GI doc...but I actually would like them to come hang out here with us for a few weeks and then see what they think about that...IMHO that is just one more thing that they are"off a little on" when it comes to celiac!! ;)

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
