I had to quit baking gluten-free goodies, and not buy any chocolate or candies. If it is gluten-free and in the house, I will eat it. I have 70+ pounds to go, and am trying to relearn eating habits. As far as cravings go, if I am willing to walk a mile to the nearest store, then walk a mile back in 100 degree heat, then I will get it. Usually, I decide it is not worth the effort.

I have to keep all goodies and even the ingredients to make goodies out of the house too. Otherwise I can't stay out of them. :P

The other thing I do is remind myself of how bad these foods make me feel and that by giving in to eating them, I will only extent my withdrawal time.

This only works when I am sane

Just remind yourself that you got through the wheat withdrawals, RIGHT ??? You can do this too. :D

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
