Sick In The Morning

Been gluten-free for about two weeks now, but for about the past week I've been getting sick in the morning after I eat. I've been eating either cereal or pancakes (gluten-free, of course), and pretty soon after I eat I just get so nauseous to the point where I can't move. I sometimes also get really hot. I usually end up having to go to the bathroom like 3 times during all this, and it usually takes several hours for me to start feeling better. Anyone experience this? I'm supposed to start a new job on Monday, and there's no way I'll make it to work in the morning feeling like this!

You could have other allergies or intolerances going. I have felt that way before.

Are you still eating dairy or soy?

I hope you're not using Rice Dream milk....it is not gluten free.

Some people also have problems with some of the alternative grains.

Yes, still eating dairy and soy. I thought it might be the milk I usually have along with my breakfast, but one morning I had a bowl of cereal without milk and still felt the same way. I've been eating either Barbara's Puffins cereal, Nature's Path Honey'd Corn Flakes, or Pancakes made with gluten-free pancake mix.

It usually takes a while for me and my stomach to wake up, but sometimes I get that I have to eat NOW feeling and don't really have a choice. I don't know what else it could be, as later in the day I feel fine.

The cereal stood out to me. Not all puffins are gluten free. Double check the ingredients. It could also be cross contamination. The corn flakes should be ok. The pancake mix....which brand, what ingredients.

Yes, it could be a morning thing. I can't eat right away in the morning. A lot of times it's because I don't feel like trying to figure out everything. I'm not real cereal fan so I've found it easier to go to two meals a day (except on the weekend when my husband will figure out something for me for breakfast), and a snack if I get hungry otherwise. This doesn't work for everyone and if you are trying to gain weight would be much more challenging. Try having a lunch or dinner type food for breakfast. Maybe your stomach is rebeling over the traditional breakfast choices. Mine does with cereal and I don't stay full very long. I find I'm hungrier through the day if I eat three meals when one of them is cereal in the morning. I do better with rice and something in the morning.....eggs, some kind of meat, fruit. Maybe you could try that. You could make up rice and freeze in portion sizes that you like, pull a package into the frig at night, get up, throw the rice in an oven proof container and throw it in the oven with a little water (so it doesn't dry out), get ready and then come back and cook up an egg or two, some meat, add whatever seasoning you like and grab a piece of fruit or two.

No, definitely not pregnant. Pancake mix is Gluten-Free Pantry.

Also, the Puffins cereal is safe according to the ingredients...wholegrain brown rice flour, dehydrated cane juice, rice bran, honey, expellar pressed hugh oleic oil (canola and/or sunflower), sea salt, natural flavors, natural vitamin E...made in peanut-free facility, made on equipment that manufactures products containing dairy, soy, and tree nuts.

I've never been able to eat in the morning. When the hunger pangs hit around 11am, I have a little bag of nuts of a small piece of fruit to hold off till lunch. If I eat a big breakfast or a lot of carbs in the morning it makes me feel really ill. I've been this way since I was a kid, and gluten free has made me even a bit more sensitive I think.

Try smaller meals with less carbs.

I have a hard time with breakfast--between my food intolerances and the fact that I'm not too hungry then.

What is working well for me now is--I slice a banana into a bowl, add blueberries and sliced almonds.

You may have to experiment with different combinations/foods to see what sits best with you :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I am just going to have to experiment...problem is I only have 2 more mornings to do so. Plus, I can't not eat in the morning...I get low blood sugar symptoms (even though my blood sugar is technically normal...whole 'nother story my doctors don't have an answer to).

Make sure that box says gluten free on it. The puffins cereals that are safe clearly say gluten free on the box. The others are wheat free but not gluten free. Also check all your toiletries etc. for gluten you may be reacting to something you came in contact with a day or two before, gluten is a delayed reaction for many. I hope you get some relief soon.

I found I do better with nothing but fruit before noon. Sometimes yogurt too, but I keep it really simple. If I get hungry, I just eat more fruit.

I used to get really nauseaus every morning. Turned out MY COFFEE wasn't gluten free!!!!! It was a generic brand and when I contacted the mfr. they said "oh our lines are dusted with flour to keep things from sticking" WHA!!!" Anyway, I would have just a SIP and I'd get so nauseaus I'd puke.

Also, when you make your pancakes are you using a new non stick pan or an old pan that had gluten in it before? Stainless steel pans are fine to hang onto, but if you had an older non stick pan, or cast iron pans, those hold onto gluten.

If it's hypoglycemia type stuff, the pancakes or cereal could be the problem - too many carbs (and fairly simple ones) and not enough fat and protein... If I eat too much sugary stuff after an extended time not eating, by the time I'm done with the meal, the dramatic change in blood sugar makes me feel very ill.

      @Scatterbrain, Thiamine Vitamin B1 and amino acid Taurine work together.  Our bodies can make Taurine from meats consumed.  Our bodies cannot make Thiamine and must consume thiamine from food.  Meat is the best source of B vitamins like Thiamine.   Vegetarians may not make sufficient taurine since they don't eat meat sources of taurine.  Seaweed is the best vegetarian source of taurine. Vegetarians may not consume sufficient Thiamine since few veggies are good sources.  Whole grains, legumes, and nuts and seeds contain thiamine.  Many of these sources can be hard to digest and absorb for people with Celiac disease.   You may find taking the forms of thiamine called Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and a B Complex will give the benefits you're looking for better than taurine alone.

      @Jmartes71, I went to Doterra's site and had a look around.  The Doterra TerraZyme supplement really jumped out at me.  Since we, as Celiacs, often have digestive problems, I looked at the ingredients.  The majority of the enzymes in this supplement are made using black mold, Aspergillus!  Other enzymes are made by yeast Saccharomyces!  Considering the fact that Celiac often have permeable intestines (leaky gut syndrome), I would be very hesitant to take a product like this.  Although there may not be live black mold or yeast in the product, the enzymes may still cause an immune system response which would definitely cause inflammation throughout the body.   Skin, eyes, and intestines are all made from the same basic type of cells.  Your skin on the outside and eyes can reflect how irritated the intestines are on the inside.  Our skin, eyes, and intestines all need the same vitamins and nutrients to be healthy:  Vitamin A, Niacin B3 and Tryptophan, Riboflavin B2, Biotin B7, Vitamin C, and Omega Threes.  Remember that the eight B vitamins work together.  Just taking high doses of just one, vitamin like B12, can cause a deficiency in the others.  Taking high doses of B12 can mask a Folate B9 deficiency.  If you take B12, please take a B Complex, too.  Thiamine B1 can be taken in high doses safely without toxicity.  Thiamine is needed by itself to produce energy so every cell in the body can function, but Thiamine also works with the other B vitamins to make life sustaining enzymes and digestive enzymes.  Deficiencies in either Niacin, Vitamin C, or Thiamine can cause digestive problems resulting in Pellagra, Scurvy, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi.   If you change your diet, you will change your intestinal microbiome.  Following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, a Paleo diet, will starve out SIBO bacteria.  Thiamine keeps bacteria in check so they don't get out of control as in SIBO.  Thiamine also keeps MOLDS and Yeasts from overgrowth.   Menopause symptoms and menstrual irregularities are symptomatic of low Vitamin D.   Doctors are not as knowledgeable about malnutrition as we need them to be.  A nutritionist or dietician would be more helpful.   Take control of your diet and nutrition.  Quit looking for a pill that's going to make you feel better overnight.  The Celiac journey is a marathon, not a sprint.   "Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food."

      The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.

      I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.
