Macaroni Grill

Hello all....I know we're always looking for safe and yummy dining experiences, so I wanted to share my experiences I've had at Macaroni Grill. I've been to the one in Cary, NC two times now, and have had a wonderful, gluten free meal and great service. Both times the manager on duty was Jim, and both times he came to my table, listened carefully, discussed options and then personally prepared my meal. He even ran all the pans, utensils, and dishes for my meal thru the dishwasher first! (I didn't ask him to, he just did :)) He also had my plate covered with an aluminum take out pan as a cover when the meal came out. I'm very impressed!

The first time I had the "skinny chicken" and the second time (last night) I tried the simple salmon. I especially loved the salmon, which came with a generous side of asparagus. Both times I had a salad with no croutons and used olive oil and balsamic as my dressing. I do think some of their dressings are safe, but that is just my preference.

Anyone else ever eat at Macaroni Grill? What were your experiences? I'm wondering if they're all this good, or if Jim is just especially attentive. Do share :)

I do find it amusing that one of the safest places I feel I can go has "MACARONI" in the name :D

This just points to how different the same restaurant came be in another place! I phoned my Macaroni grill and spoke with the manager who told me there was nothing I could eat there. He claimed everything came marinated and could not even think about the cc issue.

I am so glad you had a great experience!

If there is a corporate office you should email or write and tell them what a great manager they have in Jim. It is really nice when someone takes that extra step.

Macaroni Grill is one of the WORST restaurant dining experiences I have ever had. Last Sunday, my family went there and I left hungry, even though my meal was as expensive as every one else's.

The only thing on the menu I could order was the "Skinny Chicken" - a dry, tastless option they throw to people with dietary issues. There was not option for dessert, no fresh fruit, no gluten free pasta, and no options for a carbohydrate at all!

When I asked for a potato, I was told that there were no baked potatoes, and that the mashed potatoes had added WHEAT! When I asked for rice, I was told that the only rice option was rissotto which had added WHEAT! I couldn't believe my ears! THEY ADDED WHEAT TO THEIR RICE????? Can someone explain the sense in that?

YIKES! I ended up choking down a piece of dry chicken on a bed of unseasoned spinach, while watching my companions savor delicious meals. Very dissappointing.

I am usually pretty laid back about accepting the limitations I have to abide by, but I have a hard time understanding why a restaurant goes out of their way to add wheat to foods that in their natural state are gluten free. Last Sunday was one of the rare occasoins that I left an eating establishment hungry and angry. I won't be going to Macaroni Grill again, which means that when we dine out as a family, the whole group will take our $100.00 dinner tab to another restaurant.

I also had high eosinophils which I’ve never had before either - could that be due to gluten consumption?

You're welcome! Be sure the patient eats at least ten grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks prior to repeating antibody testing.   Some people unconsciously reduce the amount of gluten in their diet because the feel unwell.  Three grams of gluten per day is sufficient to produce symptoms.  Only at ten grams or more is the immune system provoked to raise the antibody production high enough so that the antibodies leave the digestive tract and enter the blood stream where they can be measured.   Read the comments below the article...

Thanks for your response and thoughts. Total IgA is normal. HLA DQ2/DQ8 came as heterozygous and the interpretation of the lab that the risk of coeliac disease is mild to moderate. Thyroid function test is normal. I agree that the best way is to repeat tTG antibodies in 6 months time as the result was not massively high.

Welcome to the forum, @Wamedh Taj-Aldeen, How is the patient's thyroid?   You could check for thiamine deficiency which can cause the thyroid to either become hyper or hypo.  TTg IgA can be high in both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.  tTg IgA can also be high if patient is taking medications to stimulate the thyroid as in hypothyroidism.   Thanks for visiting!  Keep us posted!
