Powdered Ranch Dressing?

KrisT

Recommended Posts

I read the label and thought it was safe. I used a powdered Ranch Dressing to season the meat I cooked for dinner and almost immediately after dinner felt like I am having a reaction. I'm having horrible stomach acid, heartburn like, flare-up. What I am missing in the labeling? Other than that my meal was completely gluten free, just organic meat, gluten free pasta, and asparagus.

I don't know what brand you used, but to be on the safe side, don't use any package gravey or dried packaging, unless you know the true source or call the company. Often there are ingredences that most of us cannot pronounce. The rule here is, when in doubt, don't.

I am sorry that you are feeling bad, and believe me, WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE.......and that's why we are here.

PS: Not to make you feel worse, I have tried to be gluten free for over a year now. I am alot smarter now, but the big G can still find me.

I don't remember the ingredent that is gluten but I do remember that it was on the do not eat list. I only use Kraft, and never package mixes.

Sorry you feel bad <_<

Eating gluten free can be a very complicated issue.

Let me say first, if you have damage to your intestines, it will take several months to heal. You may not know whether you have been glutened or not, between the healing process and eating well. Does that make sence? It took me almost 8 months to really feel that I have been glutened...or to know the feeling of being glutened.

What I find missing on the forum is the offer of the "Delfi-Forum Product List". I have not seen that being offered much at all to all the new folks.

So, with that said, I do not have the direct link, but google "Delfi Forums" and search for their Gluten free Product list. You can down load this on Word, and I believe on Disc and Handheld (I am soooo out of touch with tech).

There you will find a new 2006 Gluten Free Product List of food that you can just grab off the counters and not worry about it. It has been totally reasearched, and best of all safe.

This can take the worries off alot of people. I used it alot. Lost it to a new computer, but intend to reclain it soon. But yes, to intellectually read lables, that is the key to success on a gluten free diet.

Best wishes, and keep with it babe, no choice here. Gluten puts me down for three days, and at my age, I don't have time to lay around the sofa. :)

For those of you who like hidden valley dressing (like me) I have some sad news!!

Thank you for your recent inquiry into whether some of our products contain

gluten. In fact, some of our food products, as listed below, do contain gluten.

Those products are as follows:

All Flavors of the dry Hidden Valley dressing mixes and dips contain low levels

of gluten.

Hidden Valley Salad Crispins contains gluten.

Hidden Valley bottled salad dressings, K.C. Masterpiece barbecue sauce and

Kitchen Bouquet browning and seasoning sauce may contain low levels of gluten

depending on the source of our ingredients.

HIDDEN VALLEY bottled salad dressings contain white distilled vinegar.

We understand your concern and regret that some of our food products may not fit

into your special diet requirements. Hopefully, however, this gives you the

information you need to help you decide if our products are suitable for you.

Sincerely,

Kate V. Godman

The Delphi forum with the newest safe list is Open Original Shared Link

They just published the newest "safe foods" list about a week ago.

OOPS! Wrong link! Fixed it.

Yea, I was hoping (okay, praying...) Hidden Valley would be safe but I got the same info on the phone - trace levels. And when I tried it (just in case... ) I got sick as a dog.

WOW! OK that explains it then. I had to take 2 Pascalite and 2 Zantac just to feel like I could make it through tonight. I'm better now, ut I hate having to take pills to counteract my reactions. I've been living on pills for so long and now that I am gluten-free I haven't needed them nearly as much. I'd like to be totally free from them! Wishful thinking? Maybe someday I will heal to that point.

I haven't been tested for the intestinal damage, but I can say with 100% certainty that I have it bad! It was 11 years ago that I started noticing that what came out of me was not right, and it was only last week that I finally got test results proving gluten intolerance.

Thanks for all the info! I will look up that safe list.

Don't lose hope on being able to throw away those scripts. I made quite a private production out of flushing all my meds down the toilet about 6 months after diagnosis. I am now 4 years post diagnosis and haven't had to add a single one back in. It will get easier with time and I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you! Though nothing that I take is a prescription. I have MCS and can't take most prescriptions. I live on OTC stuff like Zantac and Immodium. (not the liquid which I know has gluten) But I'd rather not have to take anything at all. I am free-er now than I used to be, but before I couldn't even leave my house without loading up on stomach aids first.

It's very easy to make your own powdered ranch mix, and you won't have the MSG and preservatives to deal with:

All it is is garlic powder, onion powder, dill, parsley, a tiny bit of paprika, and a sqeeze of lemon or a dusting of lemon zest. For ranch dressing, just mix with mayo and milk (or buttermilk). Easy! If you need a thickening agent, add cornstarch.

You can make Lipton's onion soup mix substitute by substituting dried minced onion for the onion powder.

I also add powdered buttermilk to my ranch mix. I usually use it dry to season chicken and whatnot.

Thanks for all the info! Good to know!!

I printed off and read the "safe" foods list and found out that I have been ingesting more gluten than I realized. Silly things like certain BBQ chips. Luckily I do not (can not) eat junk food very much since I have to stick to mostly organic foods.

can anyone tell me about how much of each ingredient for the homemade ranch it would be?

I would be interested in this also, I'm not good at throwing stuff together and need a detailed amount if available. Thanks :)

Oh, man, I tend to just throw it in a bowl without measuring! I definitely use more garlic powder than onion powder (maybe twice as much garlic compared to the onion), and if I'm adding it to mayo for ranch dressing, I don't add any extra salt, as the mayo already has salt. I just throw in enough parsley and dill to make it look nicely speckled.

Next time I make it, I'll try it with measuring spoons and see what I come up with. Sorry!

jerseyangel Proficient

I'm pretty sure that Penguin makes it, too. Maybe she has a recipe.

Indeed I do :)

I posted that recipe forever ago. All of the quantities can be tweaked to taste, and of course fresh herbs are better than dried, but dried works fine!

TinkerbellSwt Collaborator

Thanks penguin. I appreciate it.

Thanks, Penguin--that's what we'll have for dinner tomorrow night! :)

i'm confused now. i happened to have a packet of it in my cabinet, and the ingredients: maltodextrin, salt, monosodium glutamate, onion, garlic, parsley, buttermilk, spice, and calcium stearate - are not on the "forbidden ingredients list". where's the gluten? the only possible gluten i could even see heree would be maltodextrin, and we've all been told that in the us, maltodextrin is perfectly fine. nothing else there says gluten to me at all.

uuuuugh. this stinks. i'm sick of having to think this way about food all the time.

Fiddle-Faddle Community Regular

Oh, I don't avoid the packet because of gluten. I make my own because it's much cheaper, and I want to avoid the MSG and all that salt. $4 worth of dill, parsley, garlic powder, and onion powder (I buy my spices at the dollar store) and I can make about 50 packets!

Guest AutumnE

Thanks Penguin :) You made my night tomorrow I'm going to head off to the store and buy the ingredients. Im tasting already macaroni salad with half mayonnaise and half ranch dressing :P

Guhlia Rising Star

This is sort of off topic, but it's sort of related too... I thought maybe someone would know... The Lays Stax Hidden Valley Ranch flavor are listed as naturally gluten free on the canister. Anyone have any insight since all HV ranches are listed as NOT gluten free?

Hello, My 17 yr old daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease 2 yrs ago. She does not have gum disease and no history of cavities. Her dentist is recommending braces for her lower teeth but I read it may worsen gum recession or possibly increase cavity risk which I know are already issues for patients with celiac. Has anyone here had braces and did it cause any problems or issues with gum recession?  Her dentist seemed oblivious that celiac patients are at higher risk of gum disease /cavities. Her bottom teeth are crooked but are pretty hidden even when she smiles. Thank you!!

This is a common experience across the board with various brands of gluten-free bread products. Prices go up, size goes down. Removal of the egg component may be for the purpose of cost-cutting related to bird flu supply shortages or it may be catering to those with egg allergy/sensitivity, fairly common in the celiac community.

Living with Coeliac Disease since birth, Bread has always been an issue, never too nice, small slices and always overpriced, But Sainsbury's Free From White Sliced Bread seemed to me to be an exception with it's large uniform 12 x 12cm slices that had the bounce, texture and taste of white bread even after toasting with no issue that it was also Milk Free. Unfortunately Sainsbury's have changed the recipe and have made it 'Egg Free' too and it has lost everything that made the original loaf so unique. Now the loaf is unevenly risen with 8 x 8cm slices at best, having lost it's bounce with the texture dense and cake like after toasting resembling nothing like White Bread anymore. Unsure as to why they have had to make it 'Egg Free' as the price is the same at £1.90 a loaf. Anyone else experiencing the same issue with it? - also any recommendations for White Bread that isn't prescription? / Tesco's / Asda's are ok but Sainsbury's was superior.

Years  ago a friend and I drove north into Canada hoping to find a ski resort open in late spring,We were in my VW and found a small ski area near a small town and started up this gravelled road up a mountain. We  got about halfway up and got stuck in the mud. We tried everything we could think of but an hour later we were still stuck. Finally a pickup came down the road, laughed at our situation, then pulled the VW free of the mud. We followed him back to the ski area where where he started up the rope ski lift and we had an enjoyable hour of skiing and gave us a shot of aquavit  before we left.It was a great rescue.  In some ways this reminds me of your situation. You are waiting for a rescue and you have chosen medical practitioners to do it now or as soon as possible. As you have found out the med. experts have not learned how to help you. You face years of continuing to feel horrible, frustrated searching for your rescuer to save you. You can break away from from this pattern of thinking and you have begun breaking  away by using some herbs and supplements from doTerra. Now you can start trying some of the suggestions thatother Celiacs have written to your original posts.  You live with other people who eat gluten foods. Cross contamination is very possible. Are you sure that their food is completely separate from their food. It  is not only the gluten grains you need to avoid (wheat, barley, rye) but possibly oats, cows milk also. Whenever you fall back into that angry and frustrated way of thinking get up and walk around for a whild. You will learn ways to break that way of thinking about your problems.  Best wishes for your future. May you enjpy a better life.

Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.
