Does anyone know if Tone soap is gluten free?

I have no idea if it's gluten-free or not, but I do have a story about Tone. When I was a very young teenager (early 80s) I used Tone soap one time and had a bad allergic reaction - itched like crazy. That was way before I knew anything about this disease - in fact, I was just diagnosed about 3 weeks ago, so this is like ancient history. I wonder though . . . funny how these things stay in your memory for so long.

It's funny that this question came up because I usually use Ivory soap and found a bar of Tone hidden away in a cupboard. My guess is that it is NOT gluten-free because I have been itchy since I used it! The ingredients don't specifically say "wheat" or anything Open Original Shared Link but I think "sorbitol" can be derived from either wheat or corn.

I've been itching and cannot find another reason unless it is the soap. Since I cannot get a diagnosis (gluten free for 2 years), I might need to continue to use the soap until I can get to a dermatologist for a biopsy. Saw a doctor yesterday and he felt certain it is celiac but not worth going back to the wheat for testing. I am thankful for Atkins diet since that is when I began to find relief after 25 years of problems.

Never heard of sorbitol being made from wheat. Sorbitol can cause diarrhea in some people but it's gluten-free.

Wheat on the skin does not cause itching even if you have DH UNLESS you are allergic as well as having celiac. Also, some types of soap and other skin products cause itching because people are reacting to other ingredients. I try to use gluten-free skin products simply because some of it could get in my mouth.

My allergy test for wheat came back negative, but if I so much as put a little dab of a product containing hydrolized wheat protein on my hand, I get a terrible rash, burning and itching. This has happened with four different products. Now, it could be something else that's causing the reaction...I will have to read the labels and cross-reference. Considering wheat is one of the eight known allergens, I tend to think it's responsible. Is anyone aware of another ingredient in shampoo that is likely to cause irritation?

I can't tell you what's causing the rash and burning, but it doesn't sound like DH, especially if it's pretty immediate. Have you been diagnosed with DH?

In addition, allergy tests are not exactly known for their accuracy. It's always possible you have an allergy that was missed by the tests (gee, doesn't that sound familiar).

Dana, I'm allergic to lanolin and when I use soaps or lotions that contain it I break out in a rash and it's very itchy. You might want to check the ingredients for that. Also Ivory soap breaks me out. With all the chemicals they put in everything it's a wonder we're all not scatching! <_<

When I was a baby, I was so sensitive that I could not use soap and my mother used to wash me with Mazola Oil (corn oil). I do not remember that as I was a small baby. I did outgrow that.

I react to most of the grains when they are in soaps...wheat makes me break out in hives, oats, corn, and soy make me itch.

Research is being done, yet Celiac/Gluten Intolerance/Gluten Sensitivity is still very much in it's infancy. I truly do not believe they know enough yet about all the far reaching effects of gluten intolerance. There are so many of us that do react to topical ingredients. The difference between allergies and intolerance's are sometimes hard to figure out. I did find this link:

Open Original Shared Link

Major symptoms of food intolerance (food sensitivity):

1. gastro-intestinal (diarrhea, bloating etc.) and subsequent malabsorption problems like anaemia and osteoporosis

2. respiratory system distress including bronchitis, breathlessness, sinusitis, congestion

miscarriage; infertility in males and females

3. a large number of skin irritations from eczema to dandruff

4. a long list of general body ailments including headache, lethargy, migraine, inability to concentrate, sleep disorders, mouth ulcers, urinary problems, weight fluctuation and obsessive (addictive) eating

You will notice #3 says: a large number of skin irratations from eczema to dandruffin my opinion, this is telling us we may experience the things we do because of an intolerance. They say allergic reactions happen very quickly and intolerance's take longer to appear. BUT, many of us react to gluten very quickly, so we know this isn't necessarily true either.

I think we each have to evaulate our own systems. We know what bothers us and what doesn't. If i buy a new product and upon use, I immediately feel a hot sensation, hives appear, or itching, then I know I can not use that product and it's gone, never to be used again. Sometimes we have to be our own doctor.

I just spoke to a representative of Tone soap and asked her about the bar soap. She said it is gluten free.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
