I love Annie Lennox's Put a little love in your heart :)

Me, too. But this is her best.....

Hi Bev, how you feeling?

Yes, Bev....how's the pain?

Well, great news....absinthe is available in Ontario. Dunno about Ottawa, specifically...I will go searching tomorrow. Must get a small bottle before Friday.

This write-up makes me somewhat less excited, howevah:

Old-time absinthe contained about 250 parts thujone per million. Compared to what Van Gogh drank, modern absinthe is near-beer. In the United States and the European Union, the import and sale of absinthe is now legal if the beverage contains less than 10 parts per million of thujone. The brand B.C. is importing--Hill's, made by a Czech family whose kin live in the province--contains no measurable amount of thujone at all. (One connoisseur's Web page sums up its taste in one word: "Windex.") The Ontarian brands contain small, lawful amounts of thujone--fewer than four ppm--but both contain just 45% alcohol.

Hmmmmm.....

As the evening progresses, the weather forecast seems to be improving. It now says 15 cm overnight. It has not started yet, although the wind is definitely picking up.

Absinthian Destruction....this may well describe the upcoming weekend, if I imbibe The Phaerie and then head out for some night skiing....:o

Uhh yeah .. . .that's probably not the best idea.

A serious moment, here...Ptaum, I need you to give me an idea of what the "high' is like with a couple of absinthes

To be succinct, I'd call it kinda trippy when it starts, w/ a long lingering giggly tail.

Otherwise, I'll quote some blogger:

"An awakening of mind and spirit, a very clear awakening and knowing about my consciousness, a very sharp mind and skillful too.

With absinthe I get an almost mystical acknowledgment that I am created for a purpose and absinthe is a propellant for my brilliancy."

absinthes (whoa--how on earth does one pronounce that?)

I'm sure it's highly dependent on how many one's had. ;)

Is it very sweet?

I didn't think so, but did just read someone calling the French one sweet.

The old ritual w/ the sugarcube had a purpose. It's naturally bitter.

. .. . and The Bourne old tomato Ultimatum. .. .

I look just like Sarah in real life (what, am I not good enough for ya :P )

Ahhh but Sarah's unmarried. ;)

Well, that's not right . . . she wouldn't go lookin' for those . . .

It is just unbelievable outside (alas, NOT fan-f*ckin'tastic)....As of 5 am, we now have surpassed the second-highest amount of snow to have fallen in the region over one winter. EVAH. :o:angry: And there's more coming this weekend.

To quote my Nan, gotta stop bein' a gloomy Gert....

It's TERRIFIC for skiing!!!!!!!!

I can just see me careening down a double diamond, arms and legs flying, poles over my head, with a cherubic smile on my face, knowing that I'm truly flying, and at peace with the world..... <_<

...Nope. Absolutely not a combination for me to explore--first time absinthe with first time downhilling....

Yet another allusion to green....it seems to pervade our thread, now, with a quiet, subtle yet insistent intensity....what does it mean?:rolleyes:

Yes! Who needs Morning Glory seeds when you have morphine. My grandpa had a cancerous lung tumor removed about 10 years ago (found by accident on an x-ray and cured completely by surgery - talk about lucky/divine intervention). After the surgery he was all hopped up on morphine and thought that the nurses were trying to hold him hostage. He was adamant that he was secret security for President Clinton and was proclaiming this to everyone! He kept whispering to my mom to get him is clothes so he could sneak out and meet Clinton on Air Force One  . It has been raining here since yesterday morning and overnight it was down pouring. At 4am all you could hear was rain slamming the house....it was the loudest rain I have heard in a long time....not exactly relaxing to sleep through.

I ended up in bed at 9:30 I was so tired....

Sillies..........I need your prayers, thoughts, efforts, EVERYTHING right now. :( Here is a serious subject.........and the whole matter of the story w/ my beautiful Kissey Boy.

He and his wife separated about 15 months ago - - it was a very bad situation for many years and I won't go into detail except to say that they actually rather LIVED separately for nearly a decade before that legal and final separation. They were young when they married, and very clearly, NEVER meant to be together, though they both worked and tried very hard. That's all I'll say.

So.......D is working very hard to finalize the divorce......he has a reason now to speed things along and did not before. We are desperate for him to be free.

I need BIG BIG BIG prayers for this to happen - for some reason - and I do think this just happens w/ divorce - there is resistance and try as he may, she keeps canceling meetings etc. and time rolls on.

Okay - read this now and fast because I"ll probably erase it later.....but I am asking for your prayers for this situation - - we want green lights, no obstacles, and legal right to be married. :)

I am not one to be a proponent of divorce, but, it was well in the works before I came onto the scene, and it needs to happen.

Now........onto silly........................

I don't think the sugarcube is necessary, as I've both read that and been damn happy w/out it.

The Ritual is supposed to include dripping ice-cold water over the sugarcube, but I have no patience for that. I just put icecubes in & wait for them to melt. (Oh wait . .. ..there IS patience req'd regardless)

It's the cold water that makes it transform and become cloudy. Something in this reaction releases more flavoUrs & odoUrs.

The French is a wicked 124 proof but I don't even taste the alcohol. (Unlike the pre-clouded taste)

<phew!!> TMI yet?????????

(What have I left out?)

Do NOT refrigerate btw!!!!!!

Now a slight confession .. . .

I've done quite well w/ The Truth and the Nothing But The Truth components, but my take on The Whole Truth may not have been deposition-worthy thus far. Hopefully not perjurious. The Swiss one isn't green.

I hope you do get some - I think you'll LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURVE it, w/ more U's than previously thought possible.

 I did the whole thing w/ the sugar cube, ice, etc. - - noted the cloudiness - alas, just had the smallest sample vial........so phleeting.....like the phaerie herself.......

You silly Tom.......I as axing for advice on absinthe as - wondering if we should go to St. George distillery, or just Bev Mo? It's just do darned expensive, also. Which one's the cheapest? Is the cheap one good, but not green? I forgot.........but OMG - love your descriptions - maybe you can be a Liquor Writer (like a food writer, only drunker)

Absinthian Destruction....this may well describe the upcoming weekend, if I imbibe The Phaerie and then head out for some night skiing....

Absinthian Destruction is just............ OMG - just the perfect title for ANYthing. Book, movie, epoch, song, band, everything. New favorite phrase. 400 calories.

<um - OMG - evidently I'm the only one who can't STAND Annie Lenox - her voice just GRAAAAAAAAAAATES on me>

A DingoGirl w/out a Kissey

A roommate w/out a beer&vicodin

gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

OMG - who posted the Bart Fartist? here is a paragraph quoted, which I particularly like:

Mr. Read-the-Newspaper to his wife on speaker phone guy: You are on the top of the list for one reason and one reason only; you are without a doubt the biggest jerk in history. Who sits there and yells on speaker phone and reads stories about an axe murderer to his wife during rush hour (in the elderly and handicapped seat no less)? You do. I fought for almost two minutes, desperately pumping the volume up button on my iPod trying to block out your transgressions. My career as a fartist started then, my ignorant self absorbed friend, and you were treated to turkey chili con queso. Oooooh it was hot and wet when I crop dusted you, how did it smell? Call your wife and tell her about it.

Yes! Who needs Morning Glory seeds when you have morphine. OMG - the ER - THAT is one of the things they make you do in hell.........wait for HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS..........I waited TWELVE hours in Fresno when I had the kidney infection of aught-four..........a veeeeeeeeeeeeeery sick woman was in there alone, in a wheelchair. She was sobbing, screaming, writhing in pain........I hobbled over and told the staff that I felt she needed immediate attention.........well, she actually FELL OUT OF HER CHAIR onto the floor, and I went over there again and DEMANDED they come out - and they finally did. I do feel better HOWEVER I am semi annoyed because my primary and Lyme doc are concerned about the low sodium (which I have quite often) and my slowly rising blood pressure. I have to sit around and take my BP today and see if it stays up. if it does I have to take a break from the antibiotics.

If my sodium doesn't rebound (had blood drawn again today) then the words "treated in a hospital" were used :( . GRR!!!!!!!! BOO!!!!!!!!!!!! HISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.
    • knitty kitty
Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.

Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?

Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?

Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
