GOoOoOood morning, gang!

Holy crap.....the City of Ottawa rolled out their H1N1 vaccine dispenser sites yesterday, and it soon became chaos. Thousands of people lined up for hours......people turned away after the first hour in many locations. Crazy.

They should just deliver a few hundred cases of the serum to my place, and I could set up a drive-by innoculation site at the end of my laneway. I've been doing needles for thirty-six years - - 'twould be nothin'... . .... . ..:lol:

Who is getting the shot here? Rather unpsilly stuff... .. ..... ..so much conflicting info out there.........

NOT for us all ....except Alzy.

I REALLY dunno if he should  .... doesn't have the 'normal' flu jab

He has a leaky heart valve so is in the 'higher risk' category

Tis quite boring--but it does help.....I eschew the sugar but have drawn the line when it comes to wine  I think it helps :DB)

New washer/dryer are white--alas no pretty colors, but actually quite easy to operate once you figgure out how.....

As of this moment, I'm not. (either one) Mark either--he never gets a floo shot ever since the year his doctor talked him into it and he got sick anyway. (probably wasn't the floo, but try to tell him that..... :P ) I used to get the shot, had nausea as a side effect every single time--the last time I took it, I also had chest tightening so I'm skeered.

GAH!!!!!!

The reactions of the multitudes......so confuzzling. I have decided to get it, and me kids as well. I'm high-risk, so I can get in there first. I have actually done quite an about-face on this one -- a couple of months ago I was not going to get this vaccination, but the medical community at large has convinced me otherwise. Unlike Big Pharma, these guys stand to make no big money from a massive innoculation........in fact, they're volunteering extra hours and stretching resources, so likely they face a loss.

Jyesssss! Where in hell are ya? I need to hear your thoughts, unpsilly as they are.... . ..... . .you're watching some spectacular volcanoes. . ...... :)

From what I've heard, the mechanics of creating the H1N1 vaccine were exactly the same as regular flu shots. If they had had more notice (if people had gotten sick earlier in the year) it would have been part of the regular flu shot.

The disease itself is more mild than some strains of virus, but particularly bad for people with other issues.

Can't remember if I said this here, but saw a study where they tracked nurses to study face masks to prevent transmission. The most interesting part of the study was 2/3 of nurses became positive for H1N1 as determined by PCR, but never had symptoms. My take on this? Most people get H1N1 and never know it. You may already have produced your antibodies if you've been around sick people.

As with any shot, weigh the personal risks vs the personal benefits.

I haven't decided if I'm getting the shot. I have no worries about the vaccine itself, but I also have no worries about getting the virus. All the docs I work with are pulmonologists - I can get free medical advice all day. :)

Bah, Jyesss! I wanted you to say, pointedly, "GET the shot!", or "DON'T get the shot!"

Not me. I was undecided for some time. Still don't know if it's the right decision. My daughter's OB doc recommended not getting the H1N1.....even though she was pregnant.

Alexis should be coming home tomorrow :D .....finally got the knack of feeding vs sleeping. Jaundice is better. Woohoo!

Don't we all miss the days when our birthdays came to us, finally, after an agonizing wait.. .. . .counting the days, then the hours, dreaming of the gifts we'd be given, the big party, the cake..... . .....revelling in being a year older, more mature.. . .....

Funny how things change.

DD came traipsing into the kitchen this am and mumbled, "Happy Birthday. Can you give me a drive to school? And I need a new hair dryer.....mine is starting to stink like burning rubber".

The Ripper followed a few minutes later, and said nothing.

I heard mad whispering in the other room, then he wanders back in...."Happy Birthday, Mom. But, like, it's not ever really HAPPY anymore, is it?"

One of my birthdays . . . hubby was gone on a business trip. Kids were about 2 1/2 and 4. I made myself an angel food cake (before Skeeter was gluten-free). Well, you have to let those rest upside down on a bottle so I had to chug a beer to get myself the appropriate size bottle. At supper I made the children sing to me or they wouldn't get cake!!!:lol: The question is . . . why is this one of my most memorable birthdays??:lol:

There is one less place to set at the birthday dinner tonight, and this just hit me now as I was looking at the table.... . . .....Dad's spot, to my left, will have someone else there now, and the table will be a little smaller.

Yer sillies are here for ya, Em. It's so understandable that you would think about the loss of your dad on a day like today. As time goes on, the empty feeling will slowly be replaced with all of the wonderful memories of special days past. He's looking down today with a smile :)

Sillies--I talked to Judith this morning. The movers are finishing up loading her stuff today after a long day of last minute packing and loading yesterday. She's holding it all together well between all of the good-byes and the stress of the move itself :D They will clean the house tomorrow, and the closing is scheduled for Friday--after that, they are off to California. B)

She wanted me to tell ya'll 'hi' :)

Welcome back, Rah-shell! :) Wow, sounds like you've been hammered...... . ...were you.....swiney?

Yes, I was wondering the same

Take it easy Rachelle!!

Talking of which, (swine flu).... I was at the docs today.

We discussed Alzey's health probs and the doc strongly advised the jab for him (and Tel)...... so we're gonna go with his advice :) (jabs should arrive next week)

I was also there to get the results of my blood tests for TATT ( tired all the time!) .... had a general overhaul, cholesterol, liver funtion FBC, etc...

All ok,...... except I am REALLY anAemic!!!!

WIH????

He questioned my diet <_< (how dare he! )....which *I* think is pretty balanced. The doc then suggested he test ME for celiac disease ( ... had a good 'inward' chuckle at this suggestion)

I proceeded to tell him that I am already eating gluten-free so there was no point. (good call though!!)

Sooo, he's given me iron tabs to take for 2 months, and then re-test my bloods..... if it hasn't come up by then he wants to start 'investigations'

I clearly need to EAT FILET STEAK everynight!!!

EDIT:

PadT!, thanks for the update on Joo-dee!!! :D ..she's finally going!

Wow! Definitely a good call. Are you gluten-free all the time, Nik, or just with the family?

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana
    • trents
@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?
    • Theresa2407
thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.
    • KathyR37
Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
