Help! Can' Keep Any Food In Me For 5 Days

Anne AMP

Anne AMP Apprentice

Have not kept any food in me for 5 days. All comes out in diahrrea undigested. I have been avoiding gluten for 2 weeks and in the past 2 days have gone to eating only boiled beef, boiled chicken, and mushy cooked carrots to reduce the lectins. Cannot keep it in. Down to 102lbs. Very weak. No longer having stomach pain or back pain. Been to ER x 3 in the past week. They give me IV fluids and send me home. Are the IV fluids (Normal Saline) making me sick?

Please help, I want to live.

Anne, can you make an appointment with your doctor? When I was very ill and could keep nothing in, my doctor put me on a clear liquids only diet for 48 hours to get my GI tract to settle down. Then I moved up to soups, etc. I can't beleive boiled meat would be good for your tummy right now! Better to stay with liquids to keep you hydrated.

Feel better soon!

My doctor doesn't come back until tomorrow. What kind of soup do you use? Did you have D constanly? My stomach goes inward. Its concaved! My legs are like sticks. I have had very loose stool for 2 months and now it is all water. I am scared.

A lot of people don't start feeling better until 3-4 months on the gluten-free diet. When I was really ill with celiac disease, almost any food made me sick.

You are doing the right thing by eating foods that are easy to digest. Try staying away from complex carbohydrates like potatoes and try avoiding dairy products for a while. Try eating lots of protein and vegetables. And drink lots of water! Maybe ask your doctor about taking a vitamin supplement.

Also, have you been tested for celiac disease? You should be eating gluten if you want a celiac disease blood test or a biopsy. If you are gluten-free, you could get false negative test results. If going back on gluten is out of the question, there is a celiac gene test that you can get and you can be on a gluten-free diet.

Progresso Chicken and Wild Rice soup is gluten-free, also Imagine brand soups and you should be able to find gluten-free chicken stock by several companies.

McCormick makes a gluten-free chicken flavour bouillon.

Hi Anne,

Can you get some Cream of Rice hot cereal? When I was at my sickest, right before I was diagnosed, that's all I could keep in my system for any amount of time. I would think the meats are too rich for you right now.

I hope you get into your doctor as soon as he gets back--and that you get this under control.

Saline is gluten free. I posted on another of your threads about the pedialyte and Ensure. I was where you are at before I got diagnosed. I was also in a fetal position because of the dehydration. You need to see your doctor ASAP. The dehydration is not something to mess with. Keep us informed.

Welcome Anne and hang in there- I would start with pedialyte and work your way up to other stuff. I'm so sorry you're suffering so much. Just keep replenishing the fluids no matter how they come out. and call your doctor ASAP. Most doctors have aan emergency line with someone covered and THIS is an emergency.

Is pedialyte ok if I am unable to eat corn or rice products?

Pedialyte: Each bottle contains: water, dextrose, potassium citrate, sodium chloride and sodium citrate. Nonmedicinal ingredients: FD&C Blue #1 and Red #40 (grape flavor) and FD&C Red #40 (bubblegum flavor). Bottles of 1 000 mL (unflavored, fruit and bubble-gum flavored).

I'd say you're OK on rice there but not sure about corn. Hopefully someone knows. You could call the pharmacy and have them check.

Are you doing any better?

Called the pharmacy. They didn't know for sure. She thinks it is safe as long as it is the unflavored one. I kept some chicken soup in for a little while.. Still feel weak. Going to try some swiss chard soup to get some vitamins. I see my primary care doctor tomorrow morning. Thanks for all your help.

Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

That's great news, you can do this.  Let us know how things go and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. Cristiana 😊
