Osteoporosis

I'm on Actonel and having these side effects: fatigue, vivid dreams, occasional headaches, mild diarrhea.

Of course, it's hard to say for certain if these symptoms are from the drug or a gluten exposure.

I'd like to hear other experiences with osteoporosis--how they are treating it and tolerating the medications, if any.

Thanks for your time and effort in replying!

I am on Actonel 35 mg once a week plus 1500 mg calcium daily (Oscal brand without maltodextrin!). I may have noticed some stool looseness and feel the need of urgency occasionally - never thought of it as a reaction to Actonel. It is manageable so haven't given it much thought. Like you, figure it is just my body's reaction to the new diet regimen since January of this year. I seem to have added a lot of corn-based food to my daily snacking - Mission corn tortillas and lots of corn chips and salsa. Good luck as you seek to find answers.

I just wanted to add that some studies (and I think you can find them on the celiac.com reference pages) note that magnesium is as important, if not more important, for celiacs with low bone density. (mag and vitD are necessary to use the calcium to build bones...)

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
