Hi-

I've read that Chex Mix can be made using gluten free cereal. Can anyone tell me where they might have been able to find "chex like" cereal. My newly diagnosed 2 year old son loved chex mix as a snack, so I'm trying to find him something like it. Thanks for your help!

Keri

The cereals are called Rice Crunch Ems and Corn Crunch Ems. Generally found at health food stores but sometimes at regular grocery stores.

I've found that a mix of Rice Crunch'Ems, Glutino pretzels, cashews and some Italian seasoning all mixed with a bit of olive oil and baked make an awesome Chex Mix. Better still, you can then take a portion of the mix, crush it in a plastic bag and then use it to coat chicken for fried or baked chicken. It is REALLY good!

Nature's Valley makes Corn and Rice Crunch'Ems. You can find them online at www.shopbydiet.com. Just follow your old Chex mix recipe. There's a recipe for Honey Sesame "Chex" mix on the boxes, give it a try. It's fabulous! When I make it I can't keep it around, my family gobbles it down on the first day every time I make it. Yum!

The honey sesame sounds really good! Has anyone tried Perky O's original flavor? Are they too sweet for the savory/original Chex style mix? I'm wondering about adding homemade gluten free croutons or bagle slices too but I don't recall seeing the bagels at the stores. I saw a post about the croutons somewhere else.

IMHO the Perky-O's have a really funky flavor and aftertaste. If you like Perky-O's I can't see why they wouldn't work in a Chex mix. The frosted Perky-O's would probably be good in the honey sesame mix. You could make your own bagel chips using Kinnikinnick bagels, just cut them into slices and toast them under the broiler with some butter, garlic, and onion. Yum.

I made a huge batch for Christmas. My great-aunt always made Chex Mix for Christmas (her own special concoction) so it has been a family tradition for years. I took over the duty when she passed away in 1993. Last Christmas - my first being gluten-free - I didn't make it. This year, I decided I would try and bought the corn and rice crunch 'ems that everyone else has mentioned. I added peanuts, glutino pretzels, barbecue seasoning (dried powder), and a little sugar (my aunt always used Life cereal and that was my favorite part - I always used to pick out the Life and just eat that!). EVERYONE that ate the mix that I made this year loved it and had no idea that it was gluten-free. It was my greatest accomplishment this Christmas season and it felt so good to be able to revive an old tradition.

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
