What Now Dentist That Said He Would

Well here I am, I searched for months for a dentist that would take celiac seriously as I am more fearful of a gluten reaction than having my mouth rebuilt at this point. He said he would check everything and I thought he seemed trustworthy but..... He uses sedation in pill form. Twice at the office they tried to hand me generics and told me they were safe, I refused them and asked for a script because I knew for a fact that the generic form of one of them was not safe. When I got to the drug store and got the scripts filled they refused to fill one of them because there is not a gluten free form of this med available. I got the others but now am concerned that his checking on the products he was going to use was as through as the checking on the pills. I am scared to death to go to this appointment but I really need to get these crowns done, I only have 4 teeth I can chew with at this point. So what do I do? Do I cancel the appointment and keep searching and pay their $75 cancellation fee, do I go and risk getting poisoned, or do I demand that he sign a paper stating that everything has been checked and he certifys that they are safe?

I don't know what to do, I am so tired of crap like this from dentists, what is wrong with the dental profession? Why don't they understand that they will make me seriously ill for weeks, that the use of gluten containing products will cause my gums to dissolve furthur and impede the healing from the procedures that need to be done. At this point I am really wondering if pulling all my teeth and dentures might be the best option even though I know my jawbone will start to disappear if I do that.

I would either go in early, or a couple of days before, and get all the phone numbers and check everything out myself. If they give you phone numbers and product info, you should be able to figure it out. If it was me, I would feel most comfortable if I had checked it out myself because you never can tell how seriously other people take this - especially when they have given you reason to doubt them.

It would be nice if this guy was a good dentist and had good customer service skills/bedside manner, but that doesn't seem to be the case. If he is a good dentist and you can take care of the gluten part yourself, then hopefully that would make you feel better.

Good luck getting all that taken care of. My husband has had a lot of dental work and I know how hard it was on him.

Thanks for the reply. This sounds like a good option. I'll call their office tommorrow morning and see if I can pick up the materials. I really wish the pharma houses would take this seriously and keep this toxin out of any meds. It sure would decrease the 'side effect list' on a lot of products.

Hi

I'm do with you on this one.

my gums are going too and i need cleanings 3 -4 months and get so sick each time.

I finally got them to listen when they saw my 'full circular mouth x-ray's and denthist had never seen any mouth like it.

They gave me a list to ck out all the suppliers and phone #'s.

Glad they did but why can't they do that since they said they know nothing of this disease in relation to what they do as dentist..oiy

This is the dentist who found my tooth absess before hip replacement that the first dentist of 15 years had singed off on and said mouth was ready for surgery.

I'm been so sick with other issures I haven't been to dentist for 1 1/2 years so i know i'm in 'FOR IT' when and if i go back

It you do the research, can you post the companies here.

I'll try to do some calling too and i know there is a thread somewhere where some products are listed.

I know i have TERRIBLE allerigic reactions to the power in the gloves they use on my.

my eye got blood red and she noticed it and said it wasn't like that when i came in.

Keep me posted ok

good luck

Lord If It Aint' Food that kills us it could be the dang dentist

Thanks for the replies.

I decided to cancel the appointment and am looking for a dentist who is already celiac knowledgable.

I lost all trust in this guys office when I filled that script, especially after having to argue with them to get scripts rather than the house generics.

It just isn't worth the risk to me and this guy insisted he check everything himself, he did not want me to do it. So off I go back to the phone book and the eternal question, "has your office treated any celiacs?'

Thanks again for your kind replies to my rant, sometimes it just helps emotionally to know that people care and your not alone.

Good for you. I was going to suggest you set up a pre-dental-work consult where the doctor could tell you all the products he will use so you can research, but it sounds like this guy just isn't going to listen or care. Finding a new dentist is definitely the way to go.

Can someone enlighten me what the risks are with dentistry? I am totally unaware of what products may or may not contain gluten?

Medications, tooth cleaners (some toothpastes have gluten- I think Sensodyne is one). I am shocked and AMAZED that gluten is still in drugs or ANY allergen for that matter. We need to get a good solid complete list of meds etc that aren't safe! I will look for one and if I find the link, I will post it here.

If the doctor wouldn't let you check the ingredients then you should find another one. I wonder if you can set things up differently with the next dentist and just go in telling them that in the past you have checked all the ingredients and that is what you would like to do, do they have a problem with that? I know personally, I would feel better if I checked things out and if you make it sound like other people let you do this, then they may not have a problem with it.

Finding a dentist that makes you feel comfortable and lets you check things out is your right. Finding a dentist that has dealt with celiacs may be a tough ask - I had a hard enough time finding a doctor that has dealt with celiac. I don't think they need that specific knowledge as much as the willingness to open and let you feel comfortable.

Hope you find a good one!

I am keeping my fingers crossed, I have an appointment with another guy on Weds to 'interveiw' him. I think your advice on just saying that is the way I want to do it with checking stuff is a good one. I am quite encouraged because not only the doctor but also the hygenist said they were familiar, they even knew how many of us are still undiagnosed and the effects on the tooth enamel. This guy has been in practice for over 20 years so I am hopeful. I tortured myself all wkend because I don't like to cancel things at the last minute and really should have filled the scripts sooner but then again if they didn't know for sure that they were safe they shouldn't have kept insisting they were. I am just glad I checked with the pharmacist, the results could have been horrific.

I always have my dentist use th flavorless tooth cleaner. It's just made out of pumice (the normal stuff is pumice plus flavor). That seems to be the least risky way to go, plus I think the plain pumice tastes better!

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

Please do more research before you settle on nicotine. Dr. Paul New house is a psychiatrist.  His latest study involves the effect of nicotine patches on Late Life Depression which has reached no long term conclusions about the benefits.   Effects of open-label transdermal nicotine antidepressant augmentation on affective symptoms and executive function in late-life depression https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39009312/   I'm approaching the subject from the Microbiologist's point of view which shows nicotine blocks Thiamine B1 uptake and usage:   Chronic Nicotine Exposure In Vivo and In Vitro Inhibits Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Uptake by Pancreatic Acinar Cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633299/   While supplementation with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine can protect from damage done by  nicotine: Benfotiamine attenuates nicotine and uric acid-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction in the rat https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18951979/   I suggest you study the beneficial effects of Thiamine (Benfotiamine and TTFD) on the body and mental health done by Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs.  Dr. Lonsdale had studied thiamine over fifty years.   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/ I suggest you read their book Thiamine Deficiency Disease, Dysautonomia, and High Calorie Malnutrition.     Celiac Disease is a disease of malabsorption causing malnutrition.  Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.
