San Fran, San Jose, gluten-free Rest

Ok, so I am asking a question that has been asked I million times. I've seen them. But I've put off organizing too long.

I am 4 days away from a trip to San Francisco(my delayed Honeymoon actually).

I used to live there, so I know the layout very well. Just wondering what good restaurants there are. I will be mostly in San Fran, San Jose, and Santa Cruz. Don't really plan on heading to the east bay, Berkley and so on. I've know of places around the east bay area, but I just don't think we will get out there.

Thanks

I was wondering the same thing because I actually LIVE there! I know there are some great sushi restaraunts in San Francisco that are gluten free, and I know of some "natural" or "vegan" restaraunts in Santa Cruz. But I was wondering the same thing...anyone know of the actual names of restaraunts? Or where we could search for those names (websites)?

Some restaurants that I know of that can make a gluten-free meal, but aren't necessarily gluten-free restaurants are PF Changs, Outback and Maggiano's. I've personally never done the gluten-free menu at any of these however so can't comment on any experiences.

I asked the same question when I moved up here and got nothing. I found pizza in the East Bay, but thats it, other than the obvious ones like PF Changs.

I know they are up here, but finding the info is proving difficult.

Digging through the celiacbayarea yahoo group. None of this is personally confirmed.

Betelnut on Union St. has a brief gluten-free menu.

Willow Glen Aqui has gluten-free items (Aqui Cal-Mex)

Evidently Old Spaghetti factory has gluten-free pasta on hand. (San Jose)

Dosa on Valencia in SF

Santa Cruz - Al Boccalino Restaurant

HTH a little.

Cool, thanks much. I totally forgot about hearing the Old Spaghetti Factory has gluten-free pasta. That will definatly be a stop I'd like. I used to eat at the one downtown San Jose all the time.

I was in San Francisco last year, at the Stanford Celiac Conference. Our food was catered by the San Francisco Soup Company. Their food was yummy!

Obviously... I didn't GO there, so I surely can't tell you where it is - but I can tell you that I was very pleasantly surprised. =)

This is good to know...my dad and I are headed out there in 2 weeks.

Cafe gratitude is all gluten free and vegan--you just have make sure that they used only tamari, and no soy sauce in their cooking that day.

They are really into the spirtual stuff--but the food is excellent!

I meant to post this while back found a few nice places. We ended up mostly eating out at more expensive places, that I knew there would be reliable Chef that knows about things.

But I had wonderful great server at The Stinking Rose, I used to love eating there when I used to live there. And was happy they were so accomidating.

Went there 3 times, never had a problem. The staff was excellent, knew exactly what I was talking about. And mentioned the Chef did too. Every single item is cooked in a clean pan each time. As the waiter told me quote "We wouldn't want to server a Filet Minon that had the taste of salmon"

Mashed potatoes are made from real potatoes, plus butter and milk. Food was awesome. But.. it was expensive... though, that in part was due to the bottles of wine...

Also had a nice surprise, my wife wanted to stop by a show where a friend of her's was now working. Its a little health food/vitamin shop. When we got there she said there was a surprise for me, they had a bunch of gluten free cookies. I hadn't heard of them before, it was the store's own brand. But, I felt I could trust it, because her father is the owner of the company, and knows that they are made in a facility that is gluten free. I had a chocolate chip cookie, and then later a big peanut butter cookie. They are the "soft" type cookie. There located in Embarcadero Ctr, 1st floor. Right around where there are lots of tourist things, so if your in town, it will probably be close and a fun treat.

I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.

Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.
