Hi everyone;

I think I actually gained a pound back last week :( It's hard to tell, I found one of my new (ulcer) medications make me bloat, even though I made sure they were gluten free. It doesn't matter now as I went back to the doctor yesterday ... not my family doctor as he is away, but the one that originally thought it was gall bladder, and when those tests were negative thought maybe ulcer. Then my own doctor agreed with him and gave me the meds. Now the meds haven't worked, the doctor that originally thought it was an ulcer started poking around, and really made me sore :o ouch, for sure. Anyway, now he thinks it's a badly pulled muscle across the stomach ... so I'm trying some 'topical' anti inflamatory. If that doesn't work, my own doctor, who is a surgeon will do a scope. But I think Dr. Kailia is right this time. Hope it doesn't take too long to heal. I'm too busy for this stuff

Yesterday I spent in Nelson seeing doctors, then today all day I was at a Rally Obedience seminar. Both Sheba and I had a blast. There is 20 of us doing it. We go tomorrow as well  I should change my avatar back to little Sheba :P

Anyway, just popped on while I had my tea ...

So B - at 5:30 this morning, was gluten-free cereal and skim milk

S- at 10:30 ... cinnamon bun ... killer callories there, but had to have something portable no to mention yummy

L- a cup of potato salad

D- a cup of potato salad and a garden salad with low cal French dressing

S- popcorn

Hope you are all having a super weekend!

Hi Everyone,

I've been away from the computer for a few days and am just finally getting back to it. So much for my resolve to write down everything and post it here to keep me accountable. I've been working out, but haven't been very careful about my diet. I guess I'll try to start again tomorrow.

My 13 yo daughter found out on Friday that she won a trip to Disney World for a national science competition, with three of her friends. We're all excited, but at the same time I'm nervous about letting her go so far from home without me. One of my good friends is the teacher/"coach" for the group and will be going, so that makes it a bit easier. I wish there was a way for me to go to (parents are welcome), but it's just not in the budget. Washington to Florida is a LONG way!

Liz- Im sorry to hear you have kidney disease, my cousin is in the first stages of it.

Autumn - my kidney disease is in remission :) . I discovered about 3 years ago that when I ate gluten, I relapsed. (It's a long story to tell how I figured this out.) I've been in remission all that time and haven't even had a scare since I went fanatically gluten-free about a year and a half ago. I didn't understand cross contamination or "hidden" glutens before then. Anyway, I even had a chance to talk to Dr. Fine (Enterolab) personally about my experience with my type of kidney disease and gluten and he agree that they are related.

Hope to see you all posting more again!

Kaycee Collaborator

Liz congratulations to your daughter for winning a trip to Disney World. What an experience it will be for her. But I know how you feel about not being there.

My diet is going well. I only overate one day last week, and so far this week so good.

I have been asked to work an extra couple of hours three times a week. For the money I will do it. It is the same two hours I gave away at the start of last year when I found out I had coeliac. I just needed to give myself a bit of time to get the hang of the disease and all it entailed. So it is back to more hours.

The family are all fine, but we are not looking forward to winter.

I am in the process of making hummus, my first try and I am a bit impatient for the chickpeas to cook, so that I can put it all together and go to bed!

Must go, catch you all later

Cathy

Kaycee Collaborator

Hi everyone, hoping everyone is fine.

The hummus I made was beautiful. Much better than the stuff you get from the supermarket. I only put a quarter of the amount of oil in and it worked out fine. Lovely with the chopped vegetables.

Been a busy week. Started the extra hours tonight, so I am absolutely stuffed.

Bradley, son, has been to Dr with blocked ears, so they have been syringed. Hubby went today for a general check up, he is fine. Me and Ryan will go next week just for general checks. I am worried about my visit in case my blood pressure is up, or cholestral levels, and even the blood test might show I have still got high levels of Iga antibodies. A bit of a wreck, doctors aren't my favourite people to visit. But I have to do it.

Been feeling a bit off colour. Nothing major, just a bit icky. I don't think it is gluten, I think it might be something I have been eating. Too much in the way of processed food with too many additives. Still I will have to try to go without. Chocolate has not been a problem, as I have not been eating it!

Man am I frustrated. I've been seriously dieting for almost 3 weeks now and I've only lost 3pds. I should have lost the initial 7-10 by now, but NOPE nada. I only eat fruits, veggies and chicken, and I don't CHEAT at all. I consume less then 800 calories on most days and I have been exercising too, and I still can't lose anything. I'm afraid Celiac, Pernicious Anemia, and Narcolepsy have messed up my motabolism so badly that I'll never be able to get the 20 pds off that I gained after going gluten free UG!! I can not continue to be constantly hungry and lose nothing. This really stinks. Why in the world did I not lose a ton of weight like a lot of others have?

Kaycee Collaborator

Tell me about it. And I have been limiting my food intake to 1500 a day! No wonder it is not working, but I am too scared to go any less. Maybe I have to. I do notice that if I eat too much, even one day a week the scales go into overdrive. I hate this having to limit everything, but I hate being unwell. Unfortunately the one time I over do the eating is the only time that is necessary to tip the scales.

I walk quite a bit and am on my feet most of the day.

Tried on the jeans I was wearing last winter, and oh no, they don't fit. So I am in a bad mood!

Dumb thing done yesterday. Without looking where I was going, (was looking at a child wondering if he was one of our pupils) I tried to walk into the takeaways on the wrong side of the door. Just as well hubby was looking and let me know that I had had a moment. How embarassing. And I had not even drank a drop. As for those takeaways, I did not order any for myself, but went home and cooked my own chips and a couple of eggs.

I wanted to add my weight loss ticker hehe.

Hi Ladies,

My name is Donna I'm from Texas can I join ya'll on trying to lose weight as well. I am not formally dx for celiac disease but have been tested I think being on gluten-free diet a year ago messed up my testing my sister and self diagnosed ourselves because she approached me with the simular symptoms hers are worse than mine. I am currantly 160lbs and 4ft 11in tall really overweight. Last year when I started gluten-free I lost 14-16lbs and felt great When I found out my scopes and blood work came back neg I started to eat reg food again for 6 to 7 month and once again tested with the pillcam I was hopping that I would make my results positive, but no. I have started the gluten-free diet again have not been as strick like I was the first time but I about to get serious about it because I'm getting tired of not feeling great. I am better when I am not with my husband he likes to eat out on the weekends, but I try to eat what I know what is not going to get me going. Ok thanks Ladies

Kaycee Collaborator

Hello little d, of course you can join us. The more the merrier.

I can understand where you are coming from as to regards to not being diagnosed. It would be great to have an official diagnosis, and I am sure it would make it easier for you to stick to the diet. as it is now you can never be too sure about whether it is gluten related or not. But I have a feeling you are pretty determined to stick to it. Good luck, it gets easier with time.

My sister and I both suspected we had problems. She came back borderline, and I guess my results were borderline for coeliac, but the difference is my doctor told me it was coeliac, whereas hers said she could follow through with a biopsy or leave it as is without anything concrete. Needless to say, I am gluten free and she is blaming it on her water supply and continues to eat gluten. But a firm diagnosis would make sticking to it easier. I did dabble for a couple of weeks gluten free before I was diagnosed and I was never too strict with myself, and if I felt like something with gluten I told myself well I might not have gluten problems. I was my own worst enemy in that regard. But now there is no cheating. So I feel for you, and I'd like to say there are lot of people on this forum who have not been diagnosed so you are not alone in that field.

I am currently 182 and I am 5'3" so feeling rather blimpy. I am going to weigh myself tomorrow morning, and post the results, even shame myself if I have to. I have stuck to my diet and am still not drinking much coffee.

Hello All ... I'm still here I think  I sometimes wonder.

It's crazy busy, so don't get on the computer much. I've got two seminars finished now, just two more to go.

They are great fun, but do require time, thinking (that's hard  ) and lots of practice.

Tomorrow evening I will start doing dog obedience, agility and Rally O up here again for the season. That will be every Monday. Then on Tues. evenings I will go to Castlegar and do obedience and Rally O with the kennel club.

This Sat. (the 12th) we will all be in Trail to do their parade with all our club dogs ... balloons to give out to the children...and at leat two or three carts the dogs will be pulling :) Parades are always fun! We are going to see if Sheba will ride in a cart for awhile, with her buddy Norman, a yellow lab pulling the cart. Will be fun if she cooperates

I'm almost finished painting the ornaments ... just have three left to do, I spend about 4 1/2 hours every morning on those ... so it will be good to get them done.

We still haven't had time to get out golfing. We'd better get the clubs out soon though as we are playing in a turnament on the 27th. I don't think our scores are going to be too great

I'm still down only the six pounds ... haven't lost or gained any lately :( Oh well, maybe after walking the whole parade route I'll get some more off.

Yesterday was;

B- gluten-free cereal and skim milk

L- gluten-free breakfast bar and cinnamon roll (we were sitting in a school room in Castlegar)

D- about a 5oz New York steak with baked potato, garden salad and mixed veggies ( a bunch of us went out for dinner after the seminar :P

S- popcorn and a glass of white wine

Today so far...

B- gluten-free cereal and skim milk

L- a large orange, slice of low fat cheese, about 10 M&Ms

S- going to have some popcorn with a cup of tea

Hope you are all having a super weekend!

little d Enthusiast

Hi Ladies

Today I had for

BREAKFAST: Omelet with sauteed purple onion and green pepper, cheese, bacon

little d Enthusiast

Hi Ladies

Today I had for

BREAKFAST: Omelet with sauteed purple onion and green pepper, cheese(not gluten-free), bacon(not gluten-free)

Milk, and Coffee

No Lunch because I was still full from Breakfast, but husband wanted Braum's and I could have I thought about it, but I had A Single brownie fudge sundae. Yes I regreted it! or it could have been the new diet coke that is out that has the vitamin and minerals in it, when I was almost done with the drink I looked at the ingredient again and I saw somthing looked like it had Gluten in it (Gluconine I think that is the spelling) I had heart and stomach burn immediatly.

Dinner will be later at work because I work night 7Pm - 7AM Dinner will be GLUTEN FREE,

Later, Donna

Kaycee Collaborator

Weighed myself this morning and I am 82 kilos, same as last week, same as the week before, same as........You know the pattern. Ditto ditto ditto.

Had a doctors appointment today, and he is suggesting I loose weight, now that makes me laugh, I've told myself for years, I must loose weight. His reasons are because my blood pressure is getting a bit high! Drats, I hate that thought. I do not like the idea that my body is letting me down, I feel quite responsible for any diseases and problems it might have. To me it is a kick in the stomach. I view coeliac as genetic, so it does not get such a roasting from me, it is just one of those things I have no control over whether I get it or not. But blood pressure problems could be more to do with how I live my life! It is more in my control, and I guess loosing weight is really all in my control.

So I am a bit blah about the whole lot. I will try harder. Today, I hardly got over 1,000 calories, so that is a good start.

Tomorrow I will feel better. Did I say I burnt the sausages and set the alarm off? Well I did, who cares they were gluten filled, I wasn't going to eat them. I lost my keys, found my mobile phone which I had to live without for a whole weekend. Now that is tough. Been one of those days. Time for bed.

Hope everybody's day has gone better.

Hi Courtney;

Welcome to the site :) Are you very active? I find that I have a lot more trouble loosing weight in the winter as I'm not a skier or anything like that. Summer time I'm into training dogs and golfing, gardening etc. so I'm much more active. And of course if I'm out playing with the dogs, I'm not in the house eating

Also ... gluten free baked stuff is much higher in callories than regular gluten stuff. A gluten free donut for instance is a whopping 1200 callories ... yup, it is, the equivilant of a whole days callories in one donut! :o ... And I didn't realize that when I bought them, and still have four more sitting in the freezer. Will pick my really, really active days to eat the rest of those and then won't buy anymore :(

Glad to have you, :D Gotta go and paint now

Hi all and welcome to Courtney, Donna and Angie. I hope you all stick around!

I've had computer problems, so haven't been on here for several days. I've also had will-power problems. The five pounds that I gained right after Easter are now permanently attached  , but I guess it's my own fault. I've still been working out hard 4-5 days a week, but it's not enough if I don't seriously restrict my eating. I'm trying to look at the fact that I'm still down 7 pounds rather than beating myself up because I'd lost 12 and then gained 5 and lost a month in the process.

Today, so far:

B - beef hotdog, small piece french toast with a smidgeon of strawberry jam

Edited later:

L - rice tortilla, 2 slices deli turkey, 1 oz goat cheese, lettuce "sandwich" and salad with Italian dressing

D - turkey burger on light tapioca bread, 1/4 C beans, carrot sticks, 1/4 C homemade ice cream  (oops)

Got in a great LONG workout to burn off my little oops.

HEllo~

Yes i am very active. I walk an hour everyday and have an exercise program. For work I chase a 3 yr old all over. He is a fast little guy. Come home from work and I clean, take the dog on a walk or do yard work. I had everything checked out in my body. Everything is good. I am trying to stick with the diet my doc put me on. But its hard. Yesterday I thought I did good. I didnt cave in and have any junk. But I guess the only good thing about this gluten free food is that you can claim it on your taxes under the medical expense.

Does anyone else think that it's funny that the weight issues section is right under the baking and cooking tips? Anyway...

I wasn't too good today, but if you only knew how bad I wanted to be...

B - 2 small blueberry pancakes with a bit of strawberry jam

S - 2 more pancakes with more jam  and a handful of almonds

L - 1 rice tortilla with 1 slice deli meat, 1 oz goat cheese, lettuce and mustard, carrot sticks

D - 2 turkey hotdogs on 2 slices light tapioca bread with ketchup and mustard, carrot sticks

S - 1/2 C Kefir with a spoonful of strawberry jam

Things I wanted to eat but didn't: more pancakes, a bowl of cereal, another hotdog, rice cream, candy at the store, sunflower seeds at the baseball game, toast.

Patti - in case you stop by here: I love your avatar! It's nice to see you up close.

Im also starting glucophage again due to having pcos. I havent been on it for a while so Im keeping track of my blood sugar as well to make sure it doesnt go to low due to me not eating many carbs anymore.

I'm new but would like to chime in! I'm too skinny as I don't eat enuf carbs, so need help too. What you ate today sounds wonderful, was your snack before 8pm? I understand our body does not digest after that until the next morning. Also, don't know tinkyada pasta, I don't think I've seen it at my healthfood store (Oregon) but will check again. And what is pcos and how do you test your blood sugar? Thanks, K.

Hi ladies,

Long time no see.

WARNING: I got a virus through a pop-up on this site. (I normally don't get pop-ups) It offered 3 free gluten-free books for filling out a survey. I thought it was part of the site (which i trust) so I opened it & downloaded the trojan virus.:( It hijacks your operating system & makes your computer useless due to overwhelming pop-ups. We had to wipe my hard drive completely & start over. It is still not internet capable (I snuck in to use my son's computer because I am going through withdrawl & I wanted to get the warning out).

Diet wise things are going ok. I have been having a lot of hormonal swelling <_< but when it goes down I will probably have to buy new pants again.

Lyndsee (2 yo) has update from allergist. Now not only is she allergic to gluten & lactose intolerant, but now we add peanuts & soy to the allergy list. :o A lot of the stuff we were eating has soy flour in it. So now my gluten-free pantry is separated into the soy/peanut (top) shelf (to be eaten when she is not around) & the lower, ok for Lyndsee shelves. She gets into it & pulls out snacks for herself. ;) She also appears to have an insect sting allergy. She keeps finding fireants at Grandma's farm.

My 20 yo daughter, Nickie, is now gluten-free. She is off in Kentucky & having a hard time finding special items, so I am sending her a care package. :P I added most of the soy & peanut products to her package, since she can eat them safely. :) Hopefully you will be seeing her here soon.

Hopefully my computer will be internet capable soon! So I can visit regularly again. It looks like there are several new ladies. Welcome :D

God bless you,

Deb

Angie - the less you eat, the more your body thinks that it is 'starving' itself. You are hardly eating, so your body is holding onto what it can, and almost (if not already) reverting to starvation mode. It's hoarding everything it can to keep you functioning.

Your body is telling you this as you ARE starving, but also, you NEED to balance proteins, complex carbohydrates and good fats for optimal health and weight loss. (Combined with exercise, but you already mentioned that). This is definitely imperative.

Thanks so much for being there...I'm new - miserable - starving - and losing weight like there's no tomorrow. I just found this site and your response. Your explanation at least helps me to understand what going on with my body. I can't eat hardly anything...much of what I'm reading on this thread sounds like foods I can't tolerate. I'm starting to order food from the gluten free mall but may starve to death or wilt away if I can't get some substantial food in me soon. I'm a young senior citizen. I've had this for years and years and only two months ago found the culprit! Since then I've lost about 15 pounds and weigh about 111 (I was 127-128).

What PRACTICAL things can you suggest for food? Like today - I thought I ate only what I should...but threw in some cinnamon applesauce and also some deli chicken. A couple hours later I was doubled over again, stomach cramps, heartburn, etc....it's soooo hard to know what to eat. Any advice would be great. I'm thinking fresh fruit is good and fresh veggies and not much in cans...I've made lots of vegetable soup but it really gives me heartburn and I end up having Tums for dessert.

Sorry this is so long...I really am frustrated and was elated to find this website and chat room!! Thanks for whatever advice and encouragement you may have for me! Where else can I submit my moans, groans and complaints so as to get input from others?? Thanks so much!

KarenDianne

Kaycee Collaborator

KarenDianne,

Sorry you are feeling miserable.

I'm not sure about eating deli chicken. I avoid eating anything from the deli as there seems to be a higher chance of getting glutened, which could be what happened to you today.

I am one year in, and my diet now mainly consists of fresh fruit vegetables, plain meat and fish and hardly any processed food. I don't eat much bread, but tend to eat more in the way of rice crackers or corn crackers. If I hve to eat anything that is processed I try to make sure it has the least amount of additives possible, as they can cause problems for me. Canned fruit can be okay, as they don't always contain too many additives.

Wishing you the best, and hope you are feeling better.

Cathy

Interesting! Recent labs I had done did show that I was low in Vitamin D so I just began supplementing, it’s hard to tell so soon but it does seem to have a positive affect! Thanks for the input!

Your frustration and exhaustion are completely valid, and many in the celiac and gluten-sensitive community can relate to the overwhelming confusion you're experiencing. You’re being pulled in different directions by medical advice that seems contradictory, and it’s heartbreaking that your efforts to feel better are met with so many setbacks. Positive TTG IgA antibodies are not something to brush off, especially when combined with your long list of debilitating symptoms that clearly worsen with gluten exposure. A negative biopsy does not necessarily mean you don’t have celiac disease—it’s entirely possible that damage was missed, especially since biopsy results can vary depending on where the samples are taken and how many are collected. It’s also true that celiac disease exists on a spectrum, and many people have serious symptoms and immune responses without yet showing classic biopsy damage. Managing diabetes alongside suspected or confirmed celiac disease is incredibly tricky, especially when healthcare providers don’t work as a team to support your whole health. You shouldn’t be forced to choose between controlling your blood sugar or protecting your gut and immune system. A well-planned gluten-free diet can be both nourishing and diabetes-friendly, especially with guidance from a knowledgeable dietitian who understands both conditions. It’s also deeply concerning that your symptoms—neurological issues, severe fatigue, GI distress, rashes, and more—are being dismissed. You’re not just describing discomfort; you’re describing a level of illness that’s life-altering, and your instincts that something is seriously wrong are absolutely worth trusting. You know your body better than anyone. You deserve a team that listens, believes you, and helps you build a realistic, sustainable path to healing. Whether it’s celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or something else, you have every right to go gluten-free permanently if that’s what makes you feel functional. Many people never get a “perfect” diagnosis but reclaim their health by honoring their own experience and choosing a path of least harm. You are not crazy, you are not weak, and you are not alone. While a definitive causal link remains unclear, vitamin D's known role in immune modulation and intestinal barrier integrity suggests that it plays a significant role in the development and progression of celiac disease.  Reduced 25(OH)D levels are associated with celiac disease.  In celiac disease, gluten can damage these tight junctions, and vitamin D may play a protective role in this context.

I have posted a lot on here and find that the support , advice and information here is much more helpful than anything else.. ever. I am really tired of the back and forth advice in the medical community and I am beyond frustrated and over all of it currently. I will try to keep this as brief as possible. I have positive TTG IGA antibodies - and I have had these every time I have been tested. The first time they were positive I was told I did not have celiac and couldn't have celiac but I was gluten intolerant and to go gluten free. I did this for about 3-4 months, dedicated I might add, and I did feel better. However, my blood glucose went up drastically and since I was already pre-diabetic and insulin resistant already, I was then told to stop the gluten free diet and resume eating gluten as it would be better for my diabetes.I have been on a yo yo diet and roller coaster since between the gluten free and not gluten free. I decided to see a gastro doc and after him promising me I had celiac based on all my symptoms and positive antibodies but we needed that actual diagnosis in order to be treated correctly, and we just needed the EGD with biopsies to have that diagnosis, I reluctantly agreed to go fully on the gluten challenge for 8 weeks prior to having an EGD and colonoscopy, both with biopsies . The gluten challenge was miserable. At first I was horribly constipated, I gained 9 pounds during the challenge, had horrible swelling issues, terrible bloating, looked and felt pregnant, had rashes and itching, couldn't stay awake, had extreme brain fog, exhaustion, speech difficulties, palpitations, tachycardia , menstrual issues, had an insatiable hunger, mood swings, just all the things. All of this to get the tests and biopsies done and they looked "okay" .. so even though I was told to live like a celiac all of the sudden I am no longer at risk.. I am just gluten intolerant.  I also have uncontrolled diabetes that they feel is made worse by the gluten free diet, so again after all these tests, but having all the symptoms and still having positive antibodies I feel like I am stuck with the choice in regards to my health of addressing the diabetes or the celiac (still don't believe I am not actually Celiac).  So I have been having gluten off and on to try and manage my diabetes, even though most recently, because I have been so physically sick again (that can't be good for diabetes either right??)  with stomach pain, burning, diarrhea, stools that are yellow in color and contain mucus, nausea, some vomiting, sour stomach, I was told I need to just eat gluten free so my stomach will improve, and we will just put you on insulin - I don't want to go on insulin yet, and especially if I do not actually have to. I don't understand why I am backed in this corner of feeling like I have to choose to eat for my diabetes or my stomach, but not both, but I am over it.   So currently in regards to GI symptoms - I consistently have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas , bloating, reflux, sour stomach, yellow stools with mucus.  I am also exhausted and have been itching. I have been having increased swelling, pain, and horrible numbness and tingling, especially in my hands. I am also having an increase in relentless nightmares and night terrors. I have also been having chest pain and palpitations and tachycardia. I have even tried taking digestive enzymes to help break down gluten - (specifically the Gliadin X) and they just seem to make me feel worse. I have trouble with digestion of things like salads, beans, broccoli, etc. on a good day, and that is even worse when I have gluten on any kind of semi-regular basis.   I just can't keep doing this. Mentally, physically and emotionally I am just DONE. I already have a lot of stress in my life.. I am a single mom to a daughter who has her own health issues and is somewhat special needs. I need to be 100% to be what she needs from me, especially with all the running back and forth we have been doing to the doctors and hospitals. So I am no doctor... but I just don't think they are right about any of this. I truly feel I am celiac.. and either the damage just wasn't bad yet, or they just missed the area that has damage, or its all a precursor to full blown celiac (kind of like pre-diabetes/insulin resistance is for actual diabetes). I don't want to live miserable and feel bad all the time. I also don't want my diabetes to be so out of control I have major complications, and I don't feel like insulin is a great option if not truly needed. At this point, if I ever feel like I have a somewhat clear path of what I am dealing with,  I feel like I am looking at MONTHS to YEARS of trying to heal my body. Please help!

No, I have not been checked for any other deficiencies or issues. No one will check these things since my EGD looked normal and there was no damage. I recently saw my gastro doc and it is just frustrating. I have diabetes, which is basically uncontrolled, and I keep being told, stop eating gluten free, because the gluten free diet is contributing to my diabetes worsening. Then I am told oh just eat gluten free and you can go on insulin, which I don't feel like is a good answer either. So I end up eating gluten because they tell me it's okay or that I should bc of my diabetes. I am so sick today - physically mentally emotionally - just tired of this roller coaster ride.  I am open  for any realistic advice... I feel like I get more support here than in real life
