Hey, I have down at PCB for spring break and just saw your post. Are you a student? Auburn is a cool place. I have been there a couple of times. Do you have celiac or someone else? Is there any support groups there? Take care and hope to hear from you. :rolleyes:

Nope, I live here full time with my husband and son.

I have Celiac and have known since December of 06.

There is no group here yet. :( I am trying to start one. :lol:

Just wanted to say hi again. I would also like to start a support group here in Birmingham, espically since we just got a new Whole Food store. I plan to go see the manager after school gets out for the summer. In other cities they will let groups meet at the store. What do ya do at Auburn? My daughter wants to go to vet school there :rolleyes:

I am a stay at home home schooling mom. My husband is an Electrical Engineer. He doesn't work for the School, but for a small company.

I hear the Vet School is great. Although I also hear it is hard to get into.

What else do we do here? Drive to Birmingham and Atlanta to go to Whole Foods. :P

Just wanted to say hi,

How do you like the whole foods in B'ham. When I go I spend alot of time looking at the different choices. I had never been in a whole foods before my 10 year old daughter developed celiac. It is nice to be able to buy the baked frozen goods. Have you gone to P.F. Changs here in B'ham. We have been going more latley because myhusband who we think has celiac can go there and eat alot of foods that I don't cook. Take care and drive careful.

Hey! I am from Northern Alabama and just diagnosed with Celiac this past August. My aunt who lives here also has it too. And my 5 year old cousin had a positive blood test but negative biopsy saying she will develop celiac eventually. There are no support groups here but would love to start one too. Wish we had a Whole Food Market here. I have been going to Wal-Mart a lot lately. And there is so much gluten-free food there. I get the Van waffles ($1.98 compared to $3.99 at the health food store down the street). But all the Great Valley brand stuff labels gluten-free if it is. I was so excited to see that. But anyways... let me know if you hear of anything else in Alabama that is good to shop for food or vacation.

Hey Abana War Eagle also and welcome to the board. You have found the best resource for Celiac Disease. I am sorry that your aunt and you and maybe your cousin have Celiac, but at least you know so that you can do something about it. Since you have been doing this since August I guess you have figured most of it out. It is nice to have a Whole Foods close buy but I do not go very often. There are a few things there that are nice to get but we seem to be able to live without them. What part of North Alabama are you from? I go to Cullman to Smith Lake almost every weekend and my dad family is from Haleyville. If you need something from Birmingham let me know and maybe we could meet some where. Take care :rolleyes:

THANKS! I am from Athens, neighbors to Huntsville. Anyone from Athens on here with celiac disease? So I have found a lot to eat since becoming gluten-free but I still have my moments when I just want to cry about it. It really stinks to have to eat a plain potato or what-not at a restaurant while everyone else is having pasta's and such. But I would rather be gluten-free than be in pain. I'm always telling people "It could be worse". I am so glad to have joined this forum. I hope that it is very beneficial to me and everyone else. Thanks a bunch!

I'm in Huntsville. I haven't been able to reach the contact person from the csaceliacs site so I haven't met anyone else here with Celiac. I've found gluten-free stuff at Garden Cove near downtown Huntsville. Also, Kroger has some things among the organic isle. The Fresh Market on Airport Rd has fantastic produce as well as various gluten-free products. You just have to look because they are stocked with their regular versions.

If anyone knows of a support group in Northern Al let me know. Or if you want to start one I'd be willing to help out.

HEY!! I have heard about garden cove but i just havent had time to make it over there. and kroger did have a lot of stuff but it was so $$$$. I go to star market some so get my pancake mix and pizza crust. But i have found that wal-mart deffinitly has the most and the best price. do you go to outback a lot>? i am a regular there. and caraba's and chili's. i have been to landry's some too. they dont have a gluten-free menu but i get grilled shrimp and their house salad with house dressing which is sooo good. and i have not had any problems with it. but thats just about the only places i eat out at. there is a bbq place in athens called lawlers and they know as soon as i walk in to change their gloves and not touch any bread. i get their shredded ham. anyways... i do not know of any support group in this area either. but just having someone from this area to email is a plus!!

I live in Montgomery. My 11 year old daughter has been diagnosed. She also has Type 1 diabetes.

Hey ccrey, I just found out recently that there is already a group in B'ham. They are having a meeting next Tuesday night let me know if you are interested and I will get you the info. What part of B'ham are you from? I live in the Leeds area. Welcome to the forum. :rolleyes:

      thank you RMJ! That is very helpful advice. Good to know we aren’t crazy if we don’t do the endoscopy. We are going to try the gluten free and see how symptoms and levels improve. thank you Wheatwacked (love the username lol) that is also reassuring. Thankfully she has an amazing and experienced pediatrician. And yesss I forgot to mention the poo...

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies. Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree. Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant. That may happen even with endoscopy. Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end...

      here are the lab ranges. Normal ranges for tissue transglutaminase are: <15.0 Antibody not detected > or = 15.0 Antibody detected normal for endomysial antibody is < 1.5. So she is barely positive but still positive.

She has the weirdest poop issues.    How long did it take y'all to start seeing improvement in symptoms?

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies.  Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree.  Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant.   That may happen even with endoscopy.  Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end you save the potential trauma of the endoscopy for your baby.   Mine also had really nasty poop.  His doctor started him on Nutramigen Infant because at the time it was the only product that was hypo allergenic and had complete nutrition. The improvement was immediate.

With family history it is likely she has the genes. 2.  Try a gluten free diet and see if the symptoms go away AND the antibody levels return to normal. (This is what I would do). Endoscopies aren’t always accurate in patients as young as your daughter. Unfortunately, without an endoscopy, some doctor later in her life may question whether she really has celiac disease or not, and you’ll need to be a fierce mama bear to defend the diagnosis! Be sure you have a good written record of her current pediatrician’s diagnosis. Doing a gluten challenge for an endoscopy later in life could cause a very uncomfortable level of symptoms.   Having yourself, your husband and your son tested would be a great idea.

      Just diagnosed today

      I have been diagnosed with coeliacs disease today after endoscopy, bloods and CT scan. I have also been diagnosed with Mesenteric Panniculitis today. Both of which I believe are autoimmune diseases. I have been told I will need a dexa scan and a repeat CT scan in 6 months. I had not even heard of Mesenteric Panniculitis till today. I don’t know much about it? Has anyone else got both of these.
