Lump In Throat

Hi Guys:

For the past few weeks I've been experiencing the feeling of a lump in my throat. I think it's either a gluten reaction, or I'm allergic to my antibiotic, or both. I can swallow and everything, but it's been hanging there almost all day. This comes and goes. At first I thought it was maybe anxiety. And maybe it is, but I don't feel anxious (and I KNOW what anxiety feels like.)

I am still in the testing stages to determine the cause of my neuropathy: weak arms, legs, tingling in both, stomach and leg quivers. I have decided that when I eat something gluten-y my tummy trembles/quivers.

So my question to you all is this: What is your experience with lump in throat feelings?

Thanks!

Hi nama, I've been meaning to welcome you to the board :)

Before I was diagnosed, I also had the tingling and numbness--in my face and legs. My left arm had a feeling I can only describe as somwhere between tingling and being asleep.

At this time, I also had that lump in my throat that you describe. It didn't get in the way of swallowing, but was just constantly there. I was very aware of swallowing, though--like I could choke if I didn't chew very thoroughly. It was something I was always aware of.

This went away, gradually, after I was completely gluten-free. It took a while, but now at about 18 months out, I rarely think about it anymore.

I also had anxiety (and still do if glutened), but this didn't seem to be connected to it in my case.

Hi there,

I don't know much about this from a gluten standpoint as I have just been (I think) diagnosed with Celiac, but I had a feeling of a lump in my throat before I started taking medicine for acid reflux. I didn't have heartburn at all - just always felt like there was something stuck in my throat. I could eat, swallow, and breathe fine - it was just distracting and bothersome. After I was on acid reflux medicine for a bit, it went away and now only comes back when I forget to take my medicine.

Maybe that's your problem? I'd talk to you doctor about it.

Good luck!!

I didn't start feeling any lump in my throat until a little while after starting gluten free. It seemed to come and go, like it would be there for a few days, and then gone for a few days. Finally, after several months of gluten free, I haven't had that annoying feeling for a while. It felt like there would be a kink in my esophagus sometimes.

Thanks for the welcome Jersey! I'm still sorting through, trying for a dx. Many things that come up I instantly suspect as being part of the dx puzzle. I did a google search last night and found some information pointing to a spasm of the larynx. I hope it's just that and not some weird thyroid issue! Time will tell. I also looked into the side effects of Bactrim (antibiotic I'm on) and one of the serious ones is Goiter Formation! OK. That freaked me out a bit. Calling my doc in a sec to ask about it.

Anyway, I did see that a person can be sensitive to medications. I think I do have a gluten sensitivity, so perhaps this particular med is made with a gluten product. Hmmm

Anyone know how to search for product ingredients for prescription drugs?

I believe the feeling of a lump in the throat can be from a number of health issues. Reflux is a common one, as well as thyroid issues.

I have a lump in my throat occassionally...seems to coincide with stress. Last June I had it linger for a month. I've since found out that I have a hiatal hernia and likely reflux because of it...though not bad enough to warrant meds yet.

It would be worth talking to your doctor about it & get it checked out.

I have only had a feeling of a lump in my throat a few times, and each time it was due to a particular food I don't normally eat. So for me it seems like an allergic reaction, or perhaps some compound in the food item which is in a higher concentration than in most other foods. Certain seeds appear to do this to me, but thus far I haven't liked the taste of any of those either, so I just don't eat them anyway.

As for the weakness/numbness/tingling/etc, I'd highly recommend a magnesium supplement. It's practically done wonders for me so far, and many on this board have also found it helpful for a number of things. A sublingual methylcobalamin (vitamin B12) supplement is typically worth taking as well.

I'm not exactly sure where to get sublingual methylcobalamin. I stopped at the health food grocer today and the cashier there said she didn't think they had any. Went to the B12 section, and couldn't find it.

Any suggestions on where to get it? Do most health food stores carry it?

I had this same problem. It turned out to be from acid reflux. I got on nexium and eventually it got better. You should have the doctor take a look at it. It could be a tumor too, though that is very unlikely. My point is you should talk to a medical expert about your problem before diagnosing yourself.

I don't know of a connection. Lots of people who don't have celiac disease/gluten issues get shingles.

I’m 43, just newly diagnosed with a horrible case of shingles last week . They are all over my face , around my eye, ear , all in my scalp. Lymph nodes are a mess. Ear is a mess. My eye is hurting and sensitive. Pain has been a 10/10+ daily. Taking Motrin and Tylenol around the clock. I AM MISERABLE. The pain is unrelenting. I just want to cry.   But Developing shingles has me a bit concerned about my immune system which also has me wondering about celiac and if there’s a connection to celiac / gluten and shingles; particularly since I haven't been 💯 gluten free because of all the confusing test results and doctors advice etc., is there a connection here? I’ve never had shingles and the gluten/ celiac  roller coaster has been ongoing for a while but I’ve had gluten off and on the last year bc of all the confusion

There were some interesting talks, particularly Prof Ludvig Stollid's talk on therapeutics for coeliac disease.    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRcl2mPE0WdigRtJPvylUJbkCx263KF_t

Thank you @trents for letting me know you experience something similar thanks @knitty kitty for your response and resources.  I will be following up with my doctor about these results and I’ll read the articles you sent. Thanks - I really appreciate you all.

You're right, doctors usually only test Vitamin D and B12.  Both are really important, but they're not good indicators of deficiencies in the other B vitamins.  Our bodies are able to store Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D in the liver for up to a year or longer.  The other B vitamins can only be stored for much shorter periods of time.  Pyridoxine B 6 can be stored for several months, but the others only a month or two at the longest.  Thiamine stores can be depleted in as little as three days.  There's no correlation between B12 levels and the other B vitamins' levels.  Blood tests can't measure the amount of vitamins stored inside cells where they are used.  There's disagreement as to what optimal vitamin levels are.  The Recommended Daily Allowance is based on the minimum daily amount needed to prevent disease set back in the forties when people ate a totally different diet and gruesome experiments were done on people.  Folate  requirements had to be updated in the nineties after spina bifida increased and synthetic folic acid was mandated to be added to grain products.  Vitamin D requirements have been updated only in the past few years.   Doctors aren't required to take as many hours of nutritional education as in the past.  They're educated in learning institutions funded by pharmaceutical corporations.  Natural substances like vitamins can't be patented, so there's more money to be made prescribing pharmaceuticals than vitamins.   Also, look into the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, developed by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, a Celiac herself.  Her book The Paleo Approach has been most helpful to me.  You're very welcome.  I'm glad I can help you around some stumbling blocks while on this journey.    Keep me posted on your progress!  Best wishes!
