hello all,

This is kind of embarrassing but i need help. I have been gluten-free going on about 3 months. my father since may. we have the same skin tye and our oils smell the same as well. about 2 weeks after going gluten-free i noticed my oil smell changed. my mom thought my dads scent was bc he has been extremely sick but when we started talking and she noticed mine it was the same. Is there a connection with going gluten-free and change in body odor. any suggestions on what will help minimize this sick smell that comes out of our body? I need help if anyone has experienced this please let me know

thanks

christi

The only suggestion I can give, besides the obvious one of excellent personal hygeine, which I'm sure you're already doing, is to talk to your doctor. You don't describe the smell in much detail, but sometimes, that can be linked to other conditions.

Has this been a consistent change? (As in, for the past 2.5 months the smell has been steadily the same and of the same strength.) Are there other things you changed at the time, such as adding vitamins, eating a new food you didn't eat much of before, or a change in soap/shampoo/lotion?

Being gluten-free could be allowing the body to detoxify. It is possible that your bodies are doing so through the skin. It is something that you really should discuss with your doctor. There could also be an underlying condition that requires additional treatment. Good luck with it, and keep us posted!

Yes, i thought the same dessa already said. Your body could be detoxifying. But you should also see a doctor to make sure.

Lots of greetings, Stef

There have been articles out recently about people on the adkins diet (which is very similiar to ours) having increased bad breath. I'm not sure where your odor comes from, but you might want to do some searches on "low carb body odor" and see what you can come up with .

The smell is in the oils my body produces. its in my hair and mainly my skin. its just getting stronger. i dont think i am eating much different that before, except hardly eat out. i dont know how to quite describe it. i am an extremely oily person. i can hardly wear lotions bc then i feel like i rolled in butter. i cant wear baby powder that often bc it makes me itch. both my father and i have this same smell. its just a strong sick smell, like when someone is very ill that smell their body gives off. we are at the point of taking 2 showers a day. hes a man so its not bothering him as much. i was at the hospital with my husband the other day and i started to smell the smell from the oils in my face and i actually walked out bc i figured everyone could smell it too. i have asked fellow employees if they could smell me and they all say no, im not convinced. i keep thinking that is why we have this smell is our body is geting rid of everything. i just started tkiong b12 vitamins yesterday so its not that. I just wander could my father and i have the same problem if it is an underlying condition? dont know, but i will try and get with my dr this next week. thanks

it could also be that you both have far more sensitive noses - there are some people who can smell their own natural body odors long before anyone else can ever catch a whif.

because of the risk of possible issues, however, it's well worth talking to your doctor about this. they may be able to help with the excessive oil production as well.

Ya know...I noticed a different smell to myself shortly after going gluten-free as well. Fortunately mine wasn't too offensive, just stronger. It was noticable just sniffing my arm, for example. (I smelled like vinegar) I attributed it to detoxifying and it eventually went away. But sometimes even now after being gluten-free for 3 years, I notice it temporarily if I've eaten too much junk.

BUT, like everyone said, you might want to consider getting checked by your doc if it's posing a problem.

Have you tried any new soaps or deorderants? You might also want to change those. Our bodies chemicals change by eliminating the gluten, you may need a different cleaning regimen. Make sure you're using gluten-free lotions and hair tonics.

Good luck. That can't be fun to deal with.

Hi , My doctor also discovers the Celiac Diseas on me , I'm also suffering from Smell , that's embarrassing , I'm not aware of the Smell , even I don't know what kind of smell I have !!

I'm a new immigrant and I don't have any close friend to get some help . Also the smelling problem is not steady , Few times I've tried to go doctor and explain the problem but they've told me that I don't have any smell . But everyone in my working place know about this and this a nightmare for me ! :( Firstly I was thinking maybe I'm making mistake , But No !!

Now that I'm writing this I've call and sick because of that problem .

In last 2 days the smell has got stronger and I think it is happening because in last days I've eat more meat !?

Does anyone have any idea ?

bartfull Rising Star

Welcome Fred! I have some friends who are vegetarians, and they say they can smell a meat-eater a mile away. Maybe the smell DOES come from eating more meat. I know I eat a lot more meat than I used to. Haven't noticed a smell though.

Hi bartfull,

Thanks for your answer, I still have the digestion problem , I'm thinking maybe it's not able to digest meat ! is it a good idea to take some Super Enzyme Tab while eating meat ?

bartfull Rising Star

I have never tried enzymes, but a lot of folks here say they help. As long as it's gluten-free, give it a try.

Fred24 Newbie

Yesterday I bought Now Super Enzymes , I've used for 2 meals since then and I'm feeling a little bit relax , hopefully it will also help about the smell problem !

Do you eat a lot of garlic?

My daughter's father-in-law cannot eat garlic, it makes him get a very strong odor.

Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?
    • Scott Adams
Excess iodine supplements can cause significant health issues, primarily disrupting thyroid function. My daughter has issues with even small amounts of dietary iodine. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, consistently consuming amounts far above the tolerable upper limit (1,100 mcg/day for adults) from high-dose supplements can trigger both hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, worsen autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's, and lead to goiter. Other side effects include gastrointestinal distress. The risk is highest for individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions, and while dietary iodine rarely reaches toxic levels, unsupervised high-dose supplementation is dangerous and should only be undertaken with medical guidance to avoid serious complications. It's best to check with your doctor before supplementing iodine.

In Europe they have banned several dough modifiers potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide.  Both linked to cancers.  Studies have linked potassium bromide to kidney, thyroid, and gastrointestinal cancers.  A ban on it in goes into effect in California in 2027. I suspect this, more than a specific strain of wheat to be controlling factor.  Sourdough natural fermentation conditions the dough without chemicals. Iodine was used in the US as a dough modifier until the 1970s. Since then iodine intake in the US dropped 50%.  Iodine is essential for thyroid hormones.  Thyroid hormone use for hypothyroidism has doubled in the United States from 1997 to 2016.   Clinical Thyroidology® for the Public In the UK, incidently, prescriptions for the thyroid hormone levothyroxine have increased by more than 12 million in a decade.  The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's official journal Standard thyroid tests will not show insufficient iodine intake.  Iodine 24 Hour Urine Test measures iodine excretion over a full day to evaluate iodine status and thyroid health. 75 year old male.  I tried adding seaweed into my diet and did get improvement in healing, muscle tone, skin; but in was not enough and I could not sustain it in my diet at the level intake I needed.  So I supplement 600 mcg Liquid Iodine (RDA 150 to 1000 mcg) per day.  It has turbocharged my recovery from 63 years of undiagnosed celiac disease.  Improvement in healing a non-healing sebaceous cyst. brain fog, vision, hair, skin, nails. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis celiac disease experience exacerbation of the rash with iodine. The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect Crying Wolf?

same! how amazing you have a friend who has celiac disease. i find myself wishing i had someone to talk about it with other than my partner (who has been so supportive regardless)

They don’t give a sample size (serving size is different from sample size) so it is hard to tell just what the result means.  However, the way the result is presented  does look like it is below the limit of what their test can measure, so that is good.
