Gluten-free Moisturizer?

Izak's Mom

Does anyone have any suggestions for a gluten-free heavy-duty moisturizer? My son is SO SO SOO dry and scaly and rashy, and I'm hesitant to use anything 'regular' on him because it seems that no one can ever confirm if the 'fragrance' or 'parfum' or whatever is safe. And Vaseline just gets him too greasy - I really need something that sinks into the skin. And then I read someone's post about vitamin e oil being derived from wheat germ - ACK!! So, any suggestions would be SO very welcome!!

Thanks,

E

Dove moisturizers are almost all gluten-free. They clearly label for wheat, oats, barley, and rye, and I use both their body lotions (all of which are gluten-free, that I've read) and their facial lotion (I've only seen one of those with oats, and I believe it's a sensitive skin variety). I have *very* dry skin, and their stuff does the trick.

I hope you can find one for your son that works!

California Baby is expensive but good and gluten free :)

Your best bet might be something pure and natural, such as coconut oil or olive oil. Natural oils sink into the skin and are surprisingly not greasy at all. Sometimes I put coconut oil on my (very acne prone, oily) face and it works very well. California Baby is good too.

I use Burt's Bees Hand Salve, and Vaseline Intensive Therapy. :)

Dear Izak's Mom,

Johnson's Baby Oil is safe! It is terrific! I get incredibly dry skin on my legs and feet. You just exfoliate by having a mix of sugar and water paste on for 15 minutes, then use a rough loofah to slough off the dead skin cells. Then, you apply the oil!

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

You’re not crazy—some people have severe neurological and physical reactions to gluten, not just digestive issues. While testing can be tricky without eating gluten, documenting symptoms and seeing a specialist familiar with atypical celiac or gluten-related disorders can help. Your reactions are real, and it’s valid to be cautious.

You might consider asking for a referral to a RD (Registered Dietician) to help with food choices and planning a diet. Even apart from any gluten issues, you will likely find there are some foods you need to avoid because of the shorter bowel but you may also find that your system may make adjustments over time and that symptoms may improve.

I wish Dr’s would have these discussions with their patients. So frustrating but will continue to do research. Absolutely love this website. I will post any updates on my testing and results.  Thank you

Losing 12" of your small bowel is going to present challenges for you in nutritional uptake because you are losing a significant amount of nutritional absorption surface area. You will need to focus on consuming foods that are nutritionally dense and also probably look at some good supplements. If indeed you are having issues with gluten you will need to educate yourself as to how gluten is hidden in the food supply. There's more to it than just avoiding the major sources of gluten like bread and pasta. It is hidden in so many things you would never expect to find it in like canned tomato soup and soy sauce just to name a few. It can be in pills and medications.  Also, your "yellow diarrhea, constipation and bloating" though these are classic signs of a gluten disorder, could also be related to the post surgical shorter length of your small bowel causing incomplete processing/digestion of food.
