Colonoscopy Found Celiac In Dh 6 Years Ago And He Found Out Today!

DH went in for a colonoscopy 6 years ago due to sudden and violent D. He was told to not eat as much wheat and they left it at that, said it "might" help him. He went in for his physical today and the dr. pulled up his chart and found that the chart said "sprue" damage found 6 years ago. Husband said he remembered hearing that word in passing a few years ago but had no idea what it was. Dr. said it's more commonly known as celiac. At that my husband knew, of course because of me, exactly what it was and what it meant. I'm frustrated not only at the dr office but my husband too. I've been telling him for YEARS that his symptoms smacked of celiac but he kept blowing it off and saying nothing was found in the tests. argh.

Now if he'll just follow the diet (highly doubtful, for years he's been telling me that bread or pasta now and then wouldn't hurt me)

The dr. did tell him that the "experts" used to think this was very rare but are now realizing it's very common ........

I feel like banging my head on the wall sometimes.....

Oh my goodness!!!! Talk about not giving him an explanation of what they found! Geez!

Uh, incompetence? I would be very angry if I were your husband. I would contemplate lodging a complaint or suing. At the very least, he should write to the original doctor to report what he went through because he wasn't told what he should have been told. If nothing else, perhaps this doctor won't do this to anyone else. Or is his doctor now the same one he had before?

Yes, doctors used to think it was rare. But wasn't that disproven years before your husband was tested? There is no excuse not to stay up with the literature (or to research things if a patient presents with a particular disease). Even if it was rare, this is no excuse not to tell him and advise him what to do to avoid further damage to his body and to begin to heal.

That's horrible! Knowing about celiac 6 years ago could have prevented him from suffering the past few years. What were they looking for 6 years ago? Was it a routine colonoscopy or to see why he was feeling sick?

Did they do an endoscopy at the same time? The endoscopy and blood work is the test for celiac, not a colonoscopy.

it wasn't routine. He'd been having trouble keeping weight on, violent D, run down, feeling terrible, stomach cramps, the whole bit.

They did a biopsy at that point on some spots (I guess that's how they found the damage). I don't really know what all they did. He went to dr. appt. by himself and forgets most of whats said....guess I'll start going with him from now on...

I talked with his parents this afternoon. They said he was 'allergic' to wheat, barley, rye, etc as a child, he was always sick, very underweight, very sickly is how they put it. They didn't know about celiac then of course. Now, after talking with them and what the tests showed, it all fits together in a nice little package.

My son is upset. I told him his chances are extremely high with both a mom and a dad with it. He's now saying he doesn't have problems (just yesterday he was complaining of stomach cramps and bathroom issues, it's a normal routine for him). I think he's really in denial that he may have to give up some of the foods he loves. His mood has definitely changed this afternoon since hearing all this.

Anyway, what a bummer but I am glad that maybe husband can start feeling better....if he'll stay gluten-free that is...

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗
