Mi-del "chocolate Sandwich Cookies"

Hi,

I was in a healthfood store with my mother and nine-year-old brother. I don't remember what I was getting, but my brother was poking around the other gluten-free foods and he came across a cookie made by Mi-Del (the same ones that made the arrowroot animal-cracker-type cookies, a ginger snap cookie, and a chocolate chip cookies, which i didn't find very tasty. Anyway, they make a "Chocolate Sandwich Cookie", gluten-free, wheat-free (obviously), and dairy-free. They were very good and tasted nearly identical to Oreos. There are 21 cookies in a package. The healthfood store I was at was one of the more expensive ones in my area, but it's the only place where I can find some foods. Anyway, they were obviously overpriced at $3 per box, but i wanted to try them. I felt guilty about getting them, but my mom always tells me that if gluten-free food is all I can eat, I should at least have good variety, etc. Anyway, they were very good.....they should be less expensive at whatever store you might find them at. I'll find them somewhere else for much less....just giving a recommendation for any celiacs dreadfully missing Oreos.

Oh my word!!! My family eats Oreos in front of me all the time, and I think it's the ultimate torture!!!!! I would LOVE to get some Oreo-type cookies!! However....I AM trying to keep the sugar intake down. Do you know how much sugar they have per cookie?

I don't think my Vitamin Cottage has them, or else I would have seen them. I've been up and down the cookie aisle many times! Can you get them on the 'net?

Thanks for the tip!

Brenda

A lot of sugar.......15 grams of sugar per serving, which is three cookies, so 5 grams per cookie. If you ate one a day as a treat, it might be okay with the sugar.

BRCoats Enthusiast

Woosh! That is a lot of sugar. But one (fake) Oreo a day is better than nothing. :D

I seen, but not yet bought, the Mi-Del "oreo" cookies, mainly because they are labeled only "wheat-free," not "gluten-free" like their other cookies (arrowroot, ginger, choc. chip). I have tried calling the company but have not been successful in reaching anyone in the know. For now, we are sticking with the Glutano choc. sandwich cookies.

I believe they are available online through the Gluten Free Pantry.

It initially appears that they are only wheat-free. The front just mentions wheat-free. However, look on the back where they talk about their product and it says that the cookies are made from gluten-free products. I don't know why these people can't answer your question if it says it on the package.....

Are they also rice and egg free? Can you post the ingredients list for us?

I threw out the packaging and put the cookies in my gluten-free cookie jar, but the next time I get them, I'll post the ingredients. I think they might have rice, but I'm not sure and I'm unsure about eggs, either.

gf4life Enthusiast

The flour blend in them contains rice flour and they also have liquid whole eggs listed in the ingredients.

My daughter likes them. I don't. I shouldn't eat them anyhow, since they have soy in them, but I don't think they taste like Oreo's at all. They look like them, but the cookie is not sweet at all and the filling is too sweet. I keep some on hand for the kids and also for recipes that call for oreo style cookies. Here is the label:

I'm not a big Oreo fan, and I admit, they're not the same, but I think it's difficult to find products that are truly identical to their wheat-filled counterparts. I don't think they'll become staples of my diet, but they might be a nice change every now and then.

Here is the lising from Open Original Shared Link. They are even more expensive...but worth it if you live in a small town like me and don't have any other choice than to order on-line!! I have tried these before and they are great ~ wonderful dipped in milk! :P

Rice, rice, rice!! Argh! I am allergic to rice, and I can honestly tell you that anaphlaxis is no fun! I guess I will have to stick to making my chocolate chip cookies out of chickpea flour with ground flax for egg substitute. And oreos were my favorite, I could eat a whole package of them and milk and nothing else and be happy all day!

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
