What Are Your Favorite Gluten Free Products?

I've been asked to help a new england resort become more gluten free friendly and I'd like your help. They would like to carry some gluten free items in their on site (small) country store. Bear in mind that, if you're staying in this resort, you have access to a kitchen in your condo. There are a couple of natural food type stores within about a 10 minute drive with a very limited number of gluten free items (three to five items) and, to get a major grocery store, you'd have to drive at least 30-45 minutes. So, given that information, what 15 or so items would you like to see the store carry?

I think this would be my list:

cereal

pasta

rice milk

dairy free "butter"

pizza crust

pretzels/crackers

brownie mix

pancake/waffle mix

muffins/doughnuts

chix nuggets

gluten-free/dairy free ice cream

some sort of cereal/granola type bar

gluten-free beer

Feel free to list your favorite brands, too.

Cereals:

For kids, Gorilla Munch (or is it Crunch?)

For us, Erewhon gluten-free 'fake' Rice Krispies

That Erewhon tho - they have a 'wheat-free' version w/ a painfully similar box, I'm sure confusing many who don't know there are both.

Do the products need to be things that normally HAVE gluten?

Because for me, I'll take smoked salmon over most anything.

Besides that, Pamela's has a great Gluten-free Casein-free chocolate chip cookie.

I'm thinking celiacs would bring many products w/ them. I go on a trip tomorrow myself and half the bag might be food.

So that would make the ice cream & beer more important. (Redbridge of course)

For ricemilk, I like the one by WestSoy.

Oohhhh I love the Food4Life brown rice tortillas! Not sure if the shelf[edit: grrr meant SHELF-LIFE!] is enough for that situation.

My diet's been so much more restricted than gluten-free, I'm not as familiar as I once was. Can't think of the bars made by the company that makes Gorilla Munch cereal.

Hi - Thank you to those who have already responded. Yes, I'm looking specifically for items that are not inherintely gluten free. Normally, I bring lots of food with us. However, I forgot pasta and I spent half a day driving around looking for a store that carried gluten free pasta. That's how this whole thing came up. They don't have a lot of space but they are willing to carry some gluten free items in their store so I'm trying to get a sense from people what they would see. I'm also working with their two on site restaurants to come up with some gluten free menus (personally, I'd like to see them get a dedicated fryer so they could make gluten free french fries). Thanks!

i live in boston and am curious waht the resort is called and where it is- sounds great! can dogs stay there?

Kinnikinick bread and hamburger rolls and

EnerG crackers

Bakery on Main Cereal

These are my 3 couldn't live without them gluten-free foods, at least while I could still have corn. Kinnikinick breads, the italian and rolls are corn free also though in addition to being gluten-free. The Ener-G crackers are corn based but they are the best. I used to eat at least 3 packages a week.

Heartlands gluten free performance blend flour. I swear if my house were burning I'd grab my pets, pictures and my performance blend flour. :rolleyes: well I have to order it online and I may not get access.

Pamela's brownie mix

Applegate hotdogs expecially if I was on vacation.

Tinkyada spaghetti noodles

Lungberg Rice chips and rice

Namaste cake mixes

Bob's Red Mill pure buckwheat flour

A reputable bakery style gluten free bread and buns

Back to Nature Rice Thins

Pamela's ready made cookies

I'd be pretty content with this. There are the items I have to have always in my pantry.

cereal - Envirokidz Panda Puffs (adult and child friendly)

pasta - Tinkyada

rice milk - ?

dairy free "butter" - ?

pizza crust - Kinnikinnick

pretzels/crackers - Glutino pretzels

brownie mix - GFP

pancake/waffle mix - ?

muffins/doughnuts - Kinnikinnick

chix nuggets - Wellshire farms (IF an oven is in the suites)

gluten-free/dairy free ice cream - ?

some sort of cereal/granola type bar - Bakery on Main

gluten-free beer - Red Bridge (mainstream) and Bard's Tale (specialty)

We eat Kinnikinnick bagels regularly for breakfast or to make sandwiches on. These are a household favorite for us.

They freeze very well. I know of two stores that keep them frozen. :)

      Small Bowel Resection 12 inches

      You might consider asking for a referral to a RD (Registered Dietician) to help with food choices and planning a diet. Even apart from any gluten issues, you will likely find there are some foods you need to avoid because of the shorter bowel but you may also find that your system may make adjustments over time and that symptoms may improve.

      Losing 12" of your small bowel is going to present challenges for you in nutritional uptake because you are losing a significant amount of nutritional absorption surface area. You will need to focus on consuming foods that are nutritionally dense and also probably look at some good supplements. If indeed you are having issues with gluten you will need to educate yourself as to how gluten is hidden in the food supply. There's more to it than just avoiding the major sources of gluten like bread and pasta. It is hidden in so many things you would never expect to find it in like canned tomato soup and soy sauce just to name a few. It can be in pills and medications.  Also, your "yellow diarrhea, constipation and bloating" though these are classic signs of a gluten disorder, could also be related to the post surgical shorter length of your small bowel causing incomplete processing/digestion of food.

      There are two gluten-related disorders that share many of the same symptoms but differ in nature from each other. One is known as celiac disease or "gluten intolerance". By nature, it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the ingestion of gluten triggers the body to attack it's own tissues, specifically the lining of the small bowel. This attack causes inflammation and produces antibodies that can be detected in the blood by specific tests like the TTG-IGA test you had. Over time, if gluten is not withheld, this inflammation can cause severe damage to the lining of the small bowel and even result in nutrient deficiency related health issues since the small bowel lining is organ where all the nutrition found in our food is absorbed.  The other is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just "gluten sensitivity") which we know less about and are unsure of the exact mechanism of action. It is not an autoimmune disorder and unlike celiac disease it does not damage the lining of the small bowel, though, like celiac disease, it can cause GI distress and it can also do other kinds of damage to the body. It is thought to be more common than celiac disease. Currently, we cannot test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of NCGS. Both disorders require elimination of gluten from the diet.  Either of these disorders can find their onset at any stage of life. We know that celiac disease has a genetic component but the genes are inactive until awakened by some stress event. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% develop active celiac disease. The incidence of NCGS is thought to be considerably higher.
