Gluten Free Restaurants In San Francisco?

I am going out to dinner with friends on sunday night in the city...having just been diagnosed with celiac has been putting a damper on going out, as my friends are always scared of whether or not its safe for me...it is my choice for restaurant and i don't know any place in SF that could be gluten free...any suggestions? it would be nice to know ahead of time that its gluten free so that neither my friends nor myself have to worry during the night and we can just have a great dinner together...please let me know if anyone knows of any cool places to eat!

I was there recently with my Mom and Grandma who were visiting. (I live in Sacramento, but took them to San FRan). We were doing all the touristy stuff, and were looking for a place to eat. We went into Ghiradelli square, and ate at the nice restaurant overlooking the water, right by the old 50's style place. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the place. They didn't have a gluten-free menu, but they were super nice, and our waitress was great. She was familiar with gluten, and asked me for my top few choices, then went back and spoke with the chef. She came back out, ruled out a choice, told me another they'd have to leave the sauce off, and made me blackened fish tacos, but with different spices than my mom who rdered the same thing, as their normal rub had gluten in it. No problems.

I was there in January on vacation(Honeymoon actually) I used to live there and missed some of my favorite places. I had really good luck at The Stinking Rose, a pretty fun garlic restaraunt. Its a little spendy, but it also can be a good bet because its in a "night life" type area where there are lots of clubs and places to go, so a fun place to go with friends if your into that. Its up on Columbus St.

Basically, the waiter knew what he was doing, and they have excellent chefs that avoid cross contamination in general, just because they don't want foods to get mixed, they generally only have about 5 things on the menu. Its different each night. Prices aren't so bad ~20 - 25 dollars. average. I went out a few different times, we usually went around 8pm. Which also helps keep things a bit safe as they aren't serving a boat load of meals. Though there really isn't that much seating anyways. Maybe 25 tables

If you like garlic, its great too. They have a good garlic olive oil you can buy to take home.

Oh I just noticed when you said you were going out, so this is too late. If anywone else cares, I found this neat store on the ground floor of Embarcadero Center called Sunshine Health Foods(I think it was foods). Its mostly a health/vitamin store. But they have their own line of glutenfree cookies. I got a chocolate chip and a peanut butter one. Really tasty.

I don't know if you and your friends are amenable to going to a vegan restaurant, but there's one in Berkeley that is gluten free. It's called Cafe Gratitude. We went there in April about a week before I found out I was gluten intolerant/celiac. I remember looking at the waitress and asking, "Why would you not use wheat in your entrees?" :wacko: Anyhow here's a link if you want to look it over-Open Original Shared Link

I was in the bay area yesterday, Berkeley actually and also SF. I found a great pizza place in Berkeley called Pizza Rustica. They serve gluten free pizza along with regular pizza. the pizza was amazing! I had no reaction at all and it was the first time that I was able to share pizza with my boyfriend in the two years that we have been together. :) it was a great experience and the wait staff was wonderful and accommodating. i definitely recommend this place to any one who is over in SF or Berkeley.

I recently went to Pizza Rustica too and it was great. My boyfriend and I used to have a favorite pizza joint we'd go to every time we were in the bay area but since I went gluten-free 3 years ago we've been on the hunt for a gluten-free pizza place, and while this place is tiny, the pizza was delicious! Even with the current cost of gas in CA I would drive back to the bay just for the pizza and make a day trip out of it!

I also discovered that Mariposa baking has a cafe in Berkeley. I need to try it.

I just tried Zadin, which is in the Castro in SF. I had gluten-free deep fried calamari. It was awesome.

Looks like Pizza Rustica has moved to Oakland? Does anybody know?

Lots of great places in SF. My top recommendations for dinner are Zadin and Dosa (Filmore Dosa is bigger than Mission one)--both these restaurants are incredible.

There are places to eat for lunch in the Westfield Shopping center basement downtown (Thai and Vietnamese), including spring rolls to go in the Vietnemese. The Thai place you have to ask for the gluten-free menu--and make sure you talk to someone who understands. Nearby Z pizza downtown is fantastic (though I am not convinced about cross contamination issues).

The ferry building has vietnamese, highly rated.

Fishermans wharf = In and Out Burger and Hot Spud

Haight = Asqew grill

Marina = Amici's pizza (excellent)

      What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

      Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

      Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

      Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.

      Please can anyone help. I was diagnosed on 23rd December and I am trying my best to get my head around all the things to look out for. I have read that yeast extract is not to be eaten by coeliacs. Why? And is this all yeast extract. Or is this information wrong. Thanks.
