I have been gluten-free for 6 months now with minimal cheating. I have actually only "cheated" in the last few weeks. And when I say cheating, I mean a small cookie or a bite or bread. For the last week or so, I have been having watery diarreah that is yellow in color. My stool has not been solid for at least a week and a half. My first thought was leaky gut-but am not sure why or how come for so long. I have had an incident of leaky gut before but seems to go away rather quickly. My next thought was refractory sprue-except there is no pain involved (ie stomachache, discomfort) prior to my bowel movement. It is just watery and involves some undigested food. Please tell me it does not sound like refractory sprue. That is my biggest fear. I have made a new vow to not cheat and am actually researching gluten-free receipes as I have not done this before. Can anyone help me? I am desperate for advice.

Refractory sprue is exceedingly rare. More than likely you are just still paying for cheating. Many people get more and more sensitive and suffer harsher and harsher reactions.

I was thinking that I was just paying for that damn cookie!! I know-it really is not worth it. Thanks for your advice. I am so scared of the refractory sprue that I have nightmares about it.

Studies have shown that most people who think they have refractory sprue really are getting gluten somewhere, so I'd be uber-careful about the diet for a number of months and see if that helps.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it.
