New To This Forum & I Need Personal Advice

Hello I am new to this forum. My nightmare pretty much started about 3 years ago. :( I still haven't found out forsure if I actually have Celiac but I know the gluten-free diet has really helped. I still have another issue though and was wondering if anyone else does.....I've tried everything and I am ready to try anything else! I am still having problems going to the washroom :unsure: Is there anything that I can try that someone else has had success with. Please help! I've tried fibre with lots of water, flax meal, omega 3 oil, magnesium, prune juice etc. the list goes on!

I know everyone has to find what works for them. Both of my children had problems when they were little. For my daughter apricots were the key. For my son my pediatrician said a mixture of blueberries, watermelon, cantelope. I know too much watermelon will do it for me. Plums worked better for my son than prunes. For me my morning coffee usually does the trick!!! Good Luck

Celery or celery juice (you can buy it bottled at the greengrocer's, but read the label in case it's got some gluten in it -- unlikely, but these days, you never know).

Fresh green grapes often help my kids out.

Also, a nurse once gave me this tip, and it worked really well. Mix prune juice in WARM 7-up. The mixture needs to be at least room-temp, or a little warmer. I don't know why it has to be warm, but something about it works much better than if it's drunk cold.

You may want to eliminate dairy as well, it is known to cause constipation. Many of us are casein intolerant as well as gluten intolerant (and lots are soy intolerant as well), and wouldn't get really better until eliminating dairy.

Drink alot of beer this makes me go to the bathroom nonstop some nights! Try redbridge for gluten free beer.

J/k about above comment. :) Try drinking more water? Could be dehydrated.

Welcome, Squeak! I would try the suggestions listed (except for the beer :rolleyes: ), and if they don't work, search the forum for other suggestions that people have posted. Everyone's system is different.

I second the notion of going casein free. Many people, including me, bind up for days with the mere hint of the stuff. (Elmer's Glue started out with a mixture based on casein. Hence the cow on the bottle. That should tell you something :rolleyes: )

Some people react to soy (also a source for glue) or other foods. Have you tried a food diary to see if your problems occur more following certain foods? I've heard more than one person who can't eat white potatoes without getting constipation, for instance.

Absent some other food intolerance:

Do you exercise?

How much magnesium have you tried? I have to take quite a bit.

How much insoluble fiber do you get in a typical day? A fiber supplement might not do much if you are really deficient in your usual diet.

The more veggies I eat, the better things work for me. I could eat a whole box of prunes and have nothing happen. I suppose people vary.

I recently read someone online who had success with a combo of Vitamin C & magnesium.

When I still have problems and it has been days, I use senna tea. But I don't think this is something one should use every day.

How long have you been gluten-free? It can take months for one's system to get working properly. It may take longer the longer one has had a problem. You may respond quicker than I have, for instance. I've had this problem my entire life (I'm 54 now).

BTW your comment about still not knowing for sure if you have celiac raised the issue in my mind -- are you contemplating testing? If so, you should know that a gluten-free diet invalidates the results of blood and biopsy testing. You can do Enterolab testing up to a year after going gluten-free.

Seems that what everyone is suggesting is mainly vegetable in form, but fruit works wonders. Ya know that old saying an apple a day keeps the dr away! We go to an orchard and pick up apples that taste so much better then in the store so we want to eat them. Oh and someone suggsted water, yes lots of that.

It seems to me that the wheat and grains we gave up are fibers that help in that dept. so you have to work to replace that.

Quite honestly there isn't really any better advice unless maybe you are blocked and need some initial help. Then make sure you eat your extra fruits and veggies.

My Grandmother would feed you dried fruit, apples or an orange and have you go for a walk!

Oh and walking after eating dried fruit works rather quickly, just don't get too far from your bathroom. You might be in for a surprise on this one! ;)

When I still have problems and it has been days, I use senna tea. But I don't think this is something one should use every day.

I remember my father's mother drinking senna pod tea every day (Over 40 years ago). She insisted she could not go to the bathroom without it. She was never tested or diagnosed as having Celiac.

My father had an iliostomy because of ulcerative colitis 20 plus years ago...he also was never tested or diagnosed for Celiac.

Gee...I wonder where my brother and I got Celiac from?

hello, i am new to this forum to. i have had all kinds of problems most of my life, as for not going to the bathroom i have tried just about everything and what works for me is miralax. you canget it over the counter now , although i have a prescription from my doctor. i mix it in with my hot coffee every morning and it works great for me and thats a mircle! southern doll

Just keep in mind that any pharmaceutical product is a substitute for what we OUGHT to be getting in the foods we eat. If you need fiber, eat it!

Which makes me think that it might be a good idea if you post a day or two's worth of what you typically do eat, as that might very possibly be the whole problem. Also, what meds are you taking?

hmm...how long ago did you start gluten-free? I too just did the diet w/o knowing if I had Celiac for sure. Immediately it removed a lot of the problems, but in the first month - I had really bad "C", and tried prune juice and other odd things. Not sure what happened. Maybe the influx of rice products (which stops you up, right?) and other things. Anyway, Triphila finally seemed to help. I take that on and off. Ever since that first month, the problem doesn't seem to be around. Well, okay, one time it was back, but I might have been "glutened." Anyway - good luck.

Wow! Thanks everyone who has replied and has given me great advice! I've been pretty much gluten-free now for 2 years. I did go for a blood test but it was after I had started the diet and of course it came back negative. I also had a biopsy but I only ate gluten for 2 weeks before the test and it came back negative. The specialist then recomended that I eat gluten for 6 months and go back for the blood test. Ya like I am going to put myself through hell again! :o

To answer most of all your concerns. Yes I am fairly active, I go to the gym and I also play hockey. I eat pretty healthy too. I guess I could up the fruit for sure!

I don't take any meds other than the pill :unsure:

I took 250mg of magnesium x2 daily with the flax seed.

I don't think that dairy is my issue, but I will definately keep that in mind and see what happens.

I guess I just find it so hard to adjust to this. I use to be so normal before the nightmare started 3 years ago.

Its nice to come to this forum and finally chat to others that are going through the same thing. Thanks again everyone! I'll keep you posted on the outcome! :)

I second schotzy. DRINK MORE WATER! Add lots of fruits, bananas can be constipating....but juicy fruits are great, especially made into a smoothie.

I have constipation also, but I just tell myself when it gets painful that it is better than having unpredictable diarrhea....(no offense to those of you who do...)

Best of luck, I'll let you know if I find a cure!

While I don't have personal experience with the HealthA2Z brand of cetirizine, your caution is absolutely warranted. The inactive ingredients in pills, known as excipients, are often where gluten can be hidden, and since the FDA does not require gluten-free labeling for prescription or over-the-counter drugs, the manufacturer's word is essential. The fact that you cannot get a clear answer from Allegiant Health is a significant red flag; a company that is confident its product is gluten-free will typically have a customer service protocol to answer that exact question. In situations like this, the safest course of action is to consider this product "guilty until proven innocent" and avoid it. A better alternative would be to ask your pharmacist or doctor to help you identify a major national brand of cetirizine (like Zyrtec) whose manufacturer has a verified, publicly stated gluten-free policy for that specific medication. It's not worth the risk to your health when reliable, verifiable options are almost certainly available to you. You can search this site for USA prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

      What you're describing is indeed familiar to many in the Celiac community, especially in the early stages of healing. When the intestinal villi are damaged from Celiac disease, they struggle to properly digest and absorb fats, a condition known as bile acid malabsorption. This can cause exactly the kind of cramping and spasms you're seeing, as undigested fats can irritate the sensitive gut lining. It is highly plausible that her reactions to dairy and eggs are linked to their higher fat content rather than the proteins, especially since she tolerates lean chicken breast. The great news is that for many, this does improve with time. As her gut continues to heal on a strict gluten-free diet, her ability to produce the necessary enzymes and bile to break down fats should gradually return, allowing her to slowly tolerate a wider variety of foods. It's a slow process of healing, but your careful approach of focusing on low-fat, nutrient-dense foods like seeds and avocado is providing her system the best possible environment to recover. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.       I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.
