I don't normally come on this board for myself - i usually come about my daughter - but i don't know what to do... I've been feeling really bad these past few months and at first i thought it was stress related, coz my son was in and out of hospital with ftt. But now months later and him hopefully gaining nicely, i still feel awfull. I feel all teh time that i live in a bubble of water, you know, a bit unfocused etc. I get terribly bloated, feel generally tired - you get the symptoms. I just feel like i am drowning :(

I did do celiac blood test and it came back negative...

So now i decided enough is enough and i am gonna try gluten free for one week - not more - but i have no idea what to have for breakfast! I am dairy light (causes constipation) and don't like soya milk. I think i am too scared to try the gluten free bread on day 1 ! What else... i am (un)officially on a diet - so theoretically i would eat pancakes, but they are kinda fattening! (i am NOT fat, just crazy :D )

Let me know asap - i am desperate!

I don't think you should try gluten free and losing weight at the same time. It's just too much in one go. If you eat gluten free for one week and don't count the calories that strictly, that shouldn't be the end of the world I would think. :)

I agree with Pauliina. Going gluten free at first is hard enough without dieting. Give it a few weeks and then get back on your diet. Can you have yogurt? If so, yogurt and fresh fruit would make a great breakfast. Bakery on Main has gluten free granolas. They're excellent! Eggs and oscar meyer bacon are gluten free. A chicken and veggie omelet with salsa would be good. What about a nice, big fruit platter? I've eaten celery and nut butter for breakfast before. Yum! How about a salad with mandarin oranges, cranberries, and cottage cheese?

sauteed veggies and poached egg is good. I like zucchini. Also, sauteed napa cabbage with salt and pepper with egg on top is really good too. Sounds weird, but I figured it out after having asperegus with poached egg at a french restaurant once.

Eggs or egg whites, scrambled. Throw it in a gluten free corn tortilla if you would like - (Mission brand states gluten-free, so get those if they have them in your area)

Check out your gluten free cereal selection - hot or cold. There is cream of rice cereals, and I live off cereal by envirokids called "gorilla munch" and "amazon frosted flakes" - they only have corn and cane juice as ingredients.

I eat the Van's waffles, I toast them in my toaster oven with some butter and sprinkle some sugar on top since syrup is too much.

I haven't read about your daughter so I'm not really sure of your kitchen situation, but if you are going to try gluten free you shouldn't use your same utensils that could have knicks, pores, or wooden things. (I'm not going to list every single rule because you said you are on here a lot for your daughter so I'll assume you know, but if you have any questions just ask!)

Any fruit also makes a great breakfast, throw it in with some ice and apple juice for a smoothie

breakfast tortilla - gluten-free style (meat, scrambled eggs cheese wraped in a corn tortilla and nuked for a few seconds)

couldn't find my posting! Thanks a mill for your help - the thing is in the morning i am in a crazy rush - my daughter is supposed to be in nursery at 8:45 and normally gets there about 9:45!! So i have to eat something that keeps me going and that doesn't get cooked ;) Tall order i know... I am somewhat dairy free, although i think i will find it too hard if i am also gluten free...

For today i had eggs with rice cake - not great, but eggs sure do fill you up :P But i can't have that everyday...

When you say you eat fruit for breakfast, does it really fill you up till lunch, or do you eat something in between?! I used to eat breakfast at 8:30 and then at about 11 eat something else coz i was starving :D

Right now, i am feeling weak and dizzy and i have 2 kids to look after and they are going to want to go to the park!

Anyone elses hubby thinks they are crazy for trying this diet?! Mine said i can try it as long as i don't become a health freak!!! Well, unless chocolate becomes super healthy, that won't happen :D

Get some hemp milk, the vanilla is really good on cereal and the chocolate is great also. You could have had a good filling breakfast on the go if you had added a banana or another fruit to it. For snacks get some gluten free pretzels or just mix gluten-free raisens, gluten-free choc chips, nuts, sunflower seeds, dried fruit etc in a little baggie and bring an apple or even some delmonte canned fruit.

I do think you are making a mistake in only trying the diet for a week though. That is really not enough time to tell if it helps and in addition you are likely to be right in the middle of gluten withdrawl at the end of the week. You really need to do this strictly for at least a month or two. Unfortunately it isn't an instant fix. In addition the gluten issue may be contributing to your weight issues, they could resolve much more easily once gluten free. I lost 30 lbs in less than 3 months with no real effort at all after I went gluten-free and now weigh the same and wear the same size as I did in high school, at 51.

Breakfast is one of those challenging meals for me, as I have trouble with the sugary aspect of things early in the morning. I tend to crash and burn after that. I also ascribe to the theory of eating like a king in the morning, a prince at noon and a pauper at night. One of my favorite meals for breakfast is soup - it's warming, soothing and depending upon what you put in it, can be really nutritious and protein-packed. Of course, fixing things the night before facilitates greatly. I also have a great cookbook "A Real American Breakfast: the best meal of the day, any time of the day" by Cheryl Alters Jamison & Bill Jamison. Many of their recipes are gluten-free or easily adaptable. What I like most about the book, aside from the astoundingly wonderful recipes is the way that they break down the chapters. There's:

Eggs

Dairy

Pancakes, waffles and special toasts

Morning meats

Fish and seafood

Hashes

Stratas and other morning casseroles

Breakfast sandwiches

Home-crafted cereals

Fruits

Potatoes, tomatoes, grits, greens and beans

Breads

Morning cakes, cobblers and other sweet treats

and a section on a brimming breakfast pantry which includes such comestibles as prickly pear jelly, orange pepper jelly and margarita marmelade.

Gotta love the morning drinks section for weekends, too.

And then there's the traditional Japanese breakfast of miso soup, rice, fish and pickles or the Latin American chilaquiles, the Indian uppama, endless possibilities.

Hope you find something cheery for your early morning hours and busy lifestyle. :)

Thanks, thanks thanks!!! Today was my first day being totally gluten free - and it wasn't too bad (i don't think my hubby appreciated it though :)

You gave me such a selection of ideas... now my problem is what to choose :D i can't wait to do this properly!

Do you really think that givin g it a solid shot at being gluten free for a week is not enough? Do i really have to do it for a whole month? I don't know how i will be able to get out of eating it when others are around, friday night, till then i hope to manage! It's the only time that i will have trouble... If i see i can't manage to get out of eating bread, should i eat spelt bread or oat bread? what would be a better choice?

I've never been a morning person, so I tend to do things like salad, baked potatoes, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc for breakfast. Why not eat leftovers from the night before?

      I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.

      Hi,  I care for my seven year old daughter with Celiac. After watching her for months, I have figured out that she has problem with two kinds of fats- animal fat and cooking oils. It basically makes her intestine sore enough that she feels spasms when she is upset. It only happens on days when she has eaten more fat than her usual every day diet. (Her usual diet has chia seeds, flaxseeds, and avocado/ pumpkin seeds for fat and an occasional chicken breast.) I stopped using cooking oils last year, and when I reintroduced eggs and dairy, both of which I had held off for a few months thinking it was an issue of the protein like some Celiac patients habe mentioned to be the case, she has reacted in the same fashion as she does with excess fats. So now I wonder if her reaction to dairy and eggs is not really because of protein but fat.   I don't really have a question, just wondering if anyone finds this familiar and if it gets better with time.  Thank you.

      Hello, My name is Chanda and you are not the only one that gose through the same things. I have found that what's easiest for me is finding a few meals each week that last. I have such severe reactions to gluten that it shuts my entire body down. I struggle everyday with i can't eat enough it feels like, when I eat more I lose more weight. Make sure that you look at medication, vitamins and shampoo and conditioner also. They have different things that are less expensive at Walmart.

      Thank you so much! I saw some tips around the forum to make a food diary and now that I know that the community also struggles with corn, egg and soy, the puzzle pieces came together! Just yesterday I tried eating eggs and yes, he’s guilty and charged. Those there are my 3 combo nausea troublemakers. I’m going to adjust my diet ☺️ Also thank you for the information about MCAS! I’m from South America and little it’s talked about it in here. It’s honestly such a game changer now for treatment and recovery. I know I’m free from SIBO and Candida since I’ve been tested for it, but I’m still going to make a endoscopy to test for H. Pylori and Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Thank you again!!       Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.
