Gut Gurggling

I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago after YEARS of searching for answers. I witnessed my parents go thru all I did. They have been dead for 8 years and they never knew. Now I know that all of their flatulence, belching, etc. were Celiac symptoms...poor dears. Now I suffer at age 60 from the same. The difference is I now know the reason...in addition to Celiac I have immune antibodies to soy, dairy, casein and eggs! I just want to know, how long until all the gurggling stops?? I hate it. It's so loud that my lap dog barks at it and runs to the front door. Can anyone tell me how they handle this? Are there any remedies? And, how long till the villi heal? :o

At your age, it could take up to two years for the villi to completely heal. You may have some permanent damage, as I am sure I do.

Two weeks isn't very long. I am sure the gurgling will stop soon.

I was sick about 7 years. My stomach noises were getting worse. About a week after I went gluten-free I realized that I had gone through an entire day without "feeling" my stomach. It was amazing. I haven't had any of those problems since (about 3months) unless I inadvertently ate somthing bad.

Give it a couple of years.

In the meantime, if you buy a good probiotic, like Digestive Advantage for Irritable Bowel... that stuff helped me quite a bit... I just recently got to the point where I could stop taking the stuff... (just over 2 years gluten free... 54 years old)... it didn't make it all well, but it helped a whole lot.

I tried Culturelle one time; it's expensive and that stuff made me WORSE... so... anyway, the Digestive Advantage IBS is gluten free, cheap, (6.99 for a one-month supply in my area), and it helped me get through the first couple of years.

That's all I know to tell you... it does take time.

I am 44 and had been undiagnosed for over 11 years, I have been gluten-free for 4 mo. and I still get slight stomach gurgling, especially at night. I have found these have lessoned in intensity over time. I think you just need longer to heal. You will be surprised at the other symptoms that clear up as well!

I find that candy peppermints are soothing.

I have always had a loud stomach. I have been gluten free for over four months now and my tummy noises are not any different than what they used to be, so - at least in my case - the stomch/digestive noises don't appear to be related to my autoimmune reaction to gluten. I'd suggest maybe more meals each day - perhaps smaller than usual - to keep your digestive system in constant activity. Don't let yourself get too hungry and try to eat your meals at ther same time each day. Also read up on foods that can cause excess gas and try to avoid those. I think some of us are just 'burdened with a noisy digestive system - there are worse things to suffer from! And always remember, too, that being able to hear your gut working is a good sign - it's much much better than the alternative.

I find that the stomach noises are indication that I have been glutened or have eaten soy..

They are very annoying and loud, but in a sense I am thankful for them...because they are my bodies first warning system...

I do get low rumbling in between , but when I have been glutened or I am in for a reaction from something...the stomach yells loud and clear.. not to go further in eating a certain thing.

And then continues to grumble throughout , it's very very annoying... but like i said "its a great warning system"

      Hello, I'm very discouraged. I've been trying to find a safe vitamin mineral supplement brand for months and am tired of testing one after the other and experiencing my typical 'glutening' reactions. I'm really feeling the nutritional deficiencies set in. I'm doing the best I can to get these nutrients from my food, although it's impossible for me to intake enough vitamin D as I can't have dairy and have insufficient sun exposure in the northern hemisphere. I've tried B Complex from Country Life (certified gluten-free) - horrible reaction. I've tried Metagenics vitamin D tab (certified glute-free) - bad reaction. I've tried liquid vitamin D Thorne and D Drops - reactions were mild since I tried a drop of a drop. I understand there could be other things I'm reacting to in my diet, although my diet/intake is pretty consistent with minimal variables so I do think it's something in these supplements. I understand I could be reacting to the active ingredient vitamin/mineral itself or even the filler ingredients. I tried the vitamin D drops since the only filler ingredient is coconut oil, in some brands, which I know I can tolerate really well on its own - I cook with coconut oil frequently and have no 'glutening' reactions at all. Perhaps I'm reacting to the vitamin D itself, although I eat fatty fish every few days, an entire fillet with no 'glutening' reactions, which contains anywhere between 400-600 IU per fillet so I shouldn't be sensitive to vitamin D. All this to say, I'm desperately looking for at least a safe vitamin D supplement. Does anyone know of a safe vitamin D supplement brand? I'd love to know if there are any supplement brands that have absolutely no gluten (especially in flour form) in their facilities. I've heard of Kirkman having no grains in their facility - I may try this brand. Has anyone reacted to this brand?

      Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
