Hi!!

I am currently a graduate student completing a research project. My area of research focuses on the availability of gluten-free products for consumers with celiac disease. If you shop for gluten-free foods, I am asking you to please take 5 minutes to complete this simple survey. Thank you in advance for your time. The link to the survey is provided below:

Thank you!!

Tried but it apparently won't take my info unless I fill in home address, email & ph #.

You might have many more responses w/out those requirements.

tom,

Thank you for the feedback! I have removed the address/phone number/city/state requirements. I am still interested in where these results come from, which I can track with just the zipcode. I hope this helps you.

I have removed the address/phone number/city/state requirements.

It still wouldn't accept my input w/out those.

I filled in a nonsense address and successfully submitted, tho. :)

P.S. I'm not quite sure what you mean in the Packaging question.

All I care about there is that it's sufficiently sealed to prevent contamination.

Basically .. does the appearance of the product effect your likeihood of buying it? Do bright colors or nice lettering matter compared to taste, price or the brand name?

I took packaging to mean how it is actually packaged. I won't buy some products that have bags which easily tear or which damage easy.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to complete this survey!!

I am still looking for more responses, so if you can spare just a few minutes, I would really appreciate it if you could answer this simple 10 question survey. Thank you again.

I want to encourage any efforts to improve gluten free food, so I did your survey with a fake address as well. My zip code is correct. As a gluten-free shopper my main concern is that manufacturers don't seem to realize that a lot of celiacs have other allergies. They would appeal to a wider audience if their products were also dairy free, for example.

I really shop almost entirely by product--no store loyalty, very little brand loyalty, and minimal attention to price. There is usually only one version of the food I am looking for and only one or two stores that sell it. I can't compare it to the same thing made by another company because there usually isn't any one. For example there is one chip I can eat. It is made of rice with no soy and no dairy. There are three or four flavors in that product but I can only eat one of them. I can buy it from two stores. So I don't worry about packaging and I don't look at price. I just don't buy them much because they are expensive.

Thanks for your research.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
