6 Weeks Pregnant- 2 Questions...

Hi- I am about 6 weeks pregnant and things are going pretty well so far! I have been gluten free for almost 2 years so I'm hoping the celiac disease doesn't cause any issues with this pregnancy.

I have two questions-

1) My poop seems to be different the last two weeks. It has been more green and has pieces of undigested food in it (I can recognize carrots, sesame seeds and other unrecognizable undigested pieces). The undigested pieces are pretty small but I'm not sure why this is happening. (Maybe I'm just eating more raw veggies than before?) The poop is pretty formed, not the bid D at all. I haven't had any symptoms of getting cc. Is this just a normal pregnancy issue? I know that the digestive process changes a bit during pregnancy. Is this something to worry about at all? I have been taking progesterone orally for the last two weeks, maybe this is causing it to be more green? I checked with the pharmacist and there isn't any gluten in the formulation of the pills.

2) My second question is about vitamins. So far I have been taking a multi vitamin, an extra 400mg tab of folic acid, 1000mg calcium and 1200mg vitamin D (combined from in the multi, in the calcium pill and an extra tab too). Vitamin D is the only vitamin that I continue to be low on- as recently as March my vit. D level was on the low end (not deficient, but low). Do you think 1200 mg is too much to be taking during pregnancy? I'm thinking maybe I should cut down and try to get out in the sun more since it is now summer (I do have olive skin so might not absorb vit d from the sun as well)? Any thoughts?

Thanks for any input!

Marcia

I don't know about your first issue.

On the Vit. D issue I would suggest trying to find natural ways of increasing your vit d such as going outside during the early morning or late evening (reduce the amount of heat and direct sun exposure). Walking is really good for you while you're pregnant so maybe you should start taking a stroll in the evenings. "adequate amounts of vitamin D3 can be made in the skin after only ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen. With longer exposure to UVB rays, an equilibrium is achieved in the skin, and the vitamin simply degrades as fast as it is generated.[1]" I found that on Wikipedia.. so not sure on the reliability (it makes sense to me though). I too am 6 weeks pregnant and notice the same foods in my stool. Definately carrots and when I have been eating spinach, I totally see that too. I just found out that I have celiacs, so I might not be the best person to give advice, but I am not on anything and I still have the same thing going on with the undigested foods.

Should I be on prpgesterone? When they took the initial blood test, I literally had missed my period for 3 days, my numbers were 19 and they didn't say anything regarding the number being off, but maybe this is something that someone with celiacs should be on??

Congrats on your pregnancy Kprince! Your progesterone level seems fine. My level was low at 12 so they put me on the supplement. It doesn't have anything to do with having celiac. When I was pregnant with my son my level was at 17 and I didn't need any supplementing. Have a happy and healthy 9mos!!

You too!!!! I wish you an easy 9 months. Are you feeling sick, tired, all the fun 1st trimester joys? What orenatal are you on?

about your first question, I have read in many places the pregnancy hormones can affect the digestion. I would get a blood count just to check that everything is ok, but wouldn't worry about it too much.

That was just the visual report, so need to wait for confirmation or otherwise from the results. They did take a biopsy from the upper end of the duodenum(D1). D2 looked unremarkable on the camera. Just wish we didn’t have to wait so long for the results as she’s naturally a very anxious person. But thanks so much for taking the time to answer me

When you say the endoscopy showed potential flattening and atrophic villi, Is that the visual result and you’re still waiting for the pathology report on the biopsies? It is quite possible to have the endoscopy look ok and the biopsies show celiac damage. That happened at my last endoscopy. It is also quite possible to only have damage in some areas. Hopefully her doctor took biopsies from the areas with potential flattening and atrophy.

So even though she was initially diagnosed with IBS, could that have been wrong and she has had coeliac all along even though the endoscopy only showed potential flattening and atrophy inD1. Plus one positive and one negative blood result. It’s so confusing for my old brain!!!!

I'm trying to figure out if Oat In Calming Gel Cream from Purito is safe to use as a moisturizer on my face.  In particular, I'm not sure what to think about the oat seed water. Not sure if that should be considered safe or not. The full list of ingredients on their website are: Avena Sativa (Oat) Seed Water (77%), Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, 2,3-Butanediol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Aqua/Water, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Squalane, Hydroxyacetophenone, Carbomer, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Panthenol, Tromethamine, Ethylhexylglycerin, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Sodium Surfactin, Beta-Glucan

Aw thank you so much for replying so quickly. Just wish the endoscopy had been clearer but as you say she might be in the early stages although she’s had gastric intestinal symptoms for a few years now but was told it was IBS. She won’t get the results for about 12 weeks which is frustrating, so hopefully if she trials a gluten free diet things will hopefully improve even if only slightly. I know improvements aren’t likely to happen immediately
