Red Ichy Bumps That Look Like Bug Bites

I've just began my gluten-free diet and i had a bad reaction to some gluten a few days ago (terrible nighttime diarrhea and stomach cramps) and within 24 hours i noticed red bumps that look just like bug bites on my legs. so far i've counted 8 on my legs and 2 or 3 on my arms/armpits. the bumps are perfectly round, red and very ichy.

does anyone know if these bumps could be type of DH? i've never had any kind of rash before, with the exception of acne.

should i see a doctor or just wait for them to go away?

any advice is appreciated!

It doesn't sound like DH to me, though I'm not expert. Sounds more like hives, though. If Benadryl makes them go away, that's what they are, I'm pretty sure.

I got those same reactions on my legs and or arms. Benydryl doesnt work. I feel its a side effect of ingesting gluten.

they're starting to go away (very slowly) although not without some new ones popping up. i haven't taken anything nor have i seen a doctor so i'm keeping my fingers crossed they disappear never to be seen again...

Many people on this forum who have those itchy bug-bite-looking bumps say it can be DH. I have them too, and although I haven't had them biopsied, I believe it's DH. I had it only occastionally, a couple of times a year maybe, before I went gluten-free. Since becoming gluten-free last winter, I now get the bumps much worse if I accidentally ingest gluten (I get more of them, for a longer time). and it's also aggravated (in me, and in others on this forum) by iodine in salt, shellfish, seaweed, and also by NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, advil, motrin -- maybe even aspirin).

To relieve the itching, try applying moist teabags directly to the rash (regular black tea like Liptons). It really helps me. Sometimes it makes the difference between being able to sleep and staying up scratching. Good luck.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
