Kaiti,

I read your post about gluten-free products..I need shampoo (I've been using Thermosilk), moisturizer (I use oil of Olay), and face make-up (I use Mac), and shaving cream.

Do you know offhand if these are gluten-free or have recommendations for gluten-free?

Someone here said Coppertone is all gluten-free..do u know if that is true?

jknnej- I use dove soaps, shampoos, and conditioners, hairsprays etc....I called them and was told that they will not hide anything in their ingredients. I like to stick with one brand that I know is gluten-free. It is easier for me at least.

For makeup ALL of Bare Escentuals makeup is gluten-free...lipstick, eye liner and shadow, mascara etc...some of the moisturizers are and the ones that are not will show the ingredients but again all the makeup is. I use banana boat sunscreen when I use sunscreen (I hardly use it) I have heard that coppertone is gluten-free but I have not checked with them personally.

Last I heard Oil of olays body wash and moisturizers were gluten-free. I have not checked with them in a while though. I was told by Proctor& Gamble that anything manufactured by them don't hide wheat, rye, barley, or oats under anything.

For other Moisturizers I use Neutrogena. They sent me a gluten-free list of their products. If you are interested in that I would be more than happy to send it to you.

Hope this helps :D

I called Lancome a week or so ago and I checked about 10 things of lipstick and they said it was all gluten-free. But when I asked about all of their products they said they could not guarantee it and I would have to check with each individual thing. So do you know if all the products are gluten-free molly? That would be really cool if that whole brand was gluten-free as well :D

While this makeup thread is going, I was looking, too, for gluten-free powder and foundation, as that is the most likely thing that I could injest other than lipstick (when I'm washing my face at night, there's sometimes "run-off" from the water onto my lips, and I'm trying to be SO careful!).

Any good powders or foundations? I currently use all Clinique makeup, other than Cover Girl lipstick.

Thomas Apprentice

I think MAC makeup is gluten free.

KaitiUSA Enthusiast

jmengert-Be careful about CoverGirl lipstick. I called them and they said that their lipsticks were good except they told me the ones with fragrance in them could have traces of gluten in them.

I also called Clinique and they could not guarantee me so I threw all of my clinique stuff away:( I like that brand 2.

The foundation I use in Bare Escentuals. It works really good for me. There whole line is gluten-free as well.

Yeah, I thought that I would have to get rid of my Clinique stuff. I think that I'm just going to go get all MAC stuff and maybe mix in some Lancome. It's so expensive, though, and I hate that I have to get rid of my makeup that wasn't so cheap itself, either. So very annoying!

KaitiUSA Enthusiast

I know it is so expensive. I use Bare Escentuals and since I had to switch lines my parents are paying half and even then I find it expensive  I had to get rid of literally all the makeup and that was hard because some of the colors worked so good for me...but then I figured it it makes me feel better I'll find another good color. Hope you find something that works well :D

Mary Kay foundation and powder are glutenfree, as are the lipsticks, eye shadows, and blushes. The waterproof mascara is glutenfree, but the other two they sell are not. The clear nail polish, base, and top coat are gluten-free, but the colored nail polishes all have wheat in them. Mary Kay is the only makeup I use, so it is the only one I know anything about.

Guest gillian502

Could somebody tell me how they found out MAC is gluten-free, because I got a different response from them. They said they wouldn't guarantee anything and sent me a very long list of things to read in the very tiny printed ingredients statement of each product I'd consider buying. If it's all gluten-free across the board, so to speak, that would be a relief.

Gals- You should of seen me in the hair salon the other day........... Telling them that the shampoo/ conditioner had to be totally wheat free/ gluten-free. OMG they called the companies and went crazy.

Where can I get this Bare essentuals brand? I need some lipstick STAT and I don't want to use anything that might not be gluten-free. I use Mac make up but I'll have to check on it now.

KaitiUSA Enthusiast

jknnej-QVC offers kits with their products so if you go to their site they have a whole thing for the bare escentuals brand. You can go to bareescentuals.com to learn more about their products. Also, you can look up kits on ebay but make sure they are new and sealed. I got some good deals from off of their. I love this brand.

Andrea-thanks for that link. That's pretty cool that they have something on there especially for celiacs. It makes it so much easier when companies do that :D

This is a great question! :)

I can't tell you how many companies I have contacted with this same question. I have basically recieved the same answer from everyone. Even Johnson and Johnson for their baby lotion, "We do not add gluten to our products but cannot guarantee it because many of our ingredients come from outside sources." How ridiculous is that? <_< You would think they would want to know what's in thier own product!

I did however, get an answer from maybelline recently, they said to look in the "International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary" which is a standard in the industry. I was going to check it out online but have not had a chance yet.

It does drive me crazy though, how you can't seem to get clear responses from companies. I can't remember which one it was but one of them said "we have talked to doctors about this and have been told that since you have to ingest gluten to be affected by it, and that lotions, shampoos, and makeups are applied to the skin, that it should not be a problem." This is nuts!! Anything applied to the skin, soaks in at a cellular level. If not, then lotion companies are putting out false advertisements! Anything on the skin can cause rashes, allergic reations, ect. who are these doctors?

Hi - this is my first attempt to post a message so I hope it works! My daughter and I have both been diagnosed with celiac disease in the last two years and only now have realised that gluten-free means makeup too!!

We have had fabulous and detailed help from Justine Vella at the Estee Lauder group of companies.

These include: Clinique, Estee Lauder, Mac, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger,Origins,Bobbi Brown,Michael Kors, and Jo Malone. Send an email to Justine with your preferred products and she will check them out for you and where necessary will recommend an alternative. She has made a difference to us overnight as I have discovered I have been using lipliners containing gluten - and I thought I was being so careful!!

Hope this helps!

Are there products really gluten free? For some reason whenever I use Estee Lauder products or Clinique products I can horrible headaches and my eyes get bloodshot. I also read earlier on in this post that someone stated that Skintimate shaving cream is gluten free. I was actually just looking into this because everytime I use it my legs break out in a blotchy rash. Maybe I'm allergic to something else in these products...

debbie-doodles Contributor

anyone know offhand a drugstore brand (maybelline, covergirl, etc.) that has nail polish that is gluten-free? I love to paint my 2 year olds nails, but now am afraid to gluten her.

cdford Contributor

After readin Kaiti's posts on Bare Essentuals, I got some and tried it. This stuff is great. It takes some practice since the process is a little different than with the drugstore brands, but it has a much softer, less made-up look to it. I just got a few items, but I am definitely going back for more. I am getting way too many compliments to quit now.

Most common store brands contain wheat starch. My mom had to change her nail polish so she would not have wheat on them while preparing food for me. Here is a brand that has gluten free nail polish:

Thank you for your inquiry. We are proud to offer a nail polish and

conditioner system that contains:

- No Polyurethanes

- No Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde like derivatives

- No Toluene, Ketones or petrochemical solvents

- No Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) or other phthalates

- No Parabens or Camphor

- No aromatic hydrocarbons

- No Gluten or Wheat product derivatives

As for an explicit list of ingredients, our polish is a water base with a

proprietary acrylic emulsion and non-toxic pigments. If you require explicit

product information regarding any sensitivities you have, please let us know

what you're allergic to and we will find out for you. Our water based

remover is also safer than conventional remover by being water based with

aloe vera and isopropanol, and is exclusively required for removing

Acquarella nail polish.

debbie-doodles Contributor

Thanks so much Kaiti! I'm going to get some of that so I won't gluten my daughter while making her food too. :) Although I'm sad I have to get rid of my giant (30 bottle) nail polish collection now. :(

thank you both for the insights. i agree, im going to back off on dairy and try sucraid. thanks for the tip about protein powder, i will look for whey protein powder/drinks!   i don’t understand why my doctor refused to order it either. so i’ve decided i’m not going to her again, and i’m going to get a second opinion with a GI recommended to me by someone with celiac. unfortunately my first appointment isn’t until February 17th. do you think i should go gluten free now or wait until after i meet with the new doctor? i’m torn about what i should do, i dont know if she is going to want to repeat the endoscopy, and i know ill have to be eating gluten to have a positive biopsy. i could always do the gluten challenge on the other hand if she does want to repeat the biopsy.    thanks again, i appreciate the support here. i’ve learned a lot from these boards. i dont know anyone in real life with celiac.

Let me suggest an adjustment to your terminology. "Celiac disease" and "gluten intolerance" are the same. The other gluten disorder you refer to is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which is often referred to as being "gluten sensitive". Having said that, the reality is there is still much inconsistency in how people use these terms. Since celiac disease does damage to the small bowel lining it often results in nutritional deficiencies such as anemia. NCGS does not damage the small bowel lining so your history of anemia may suggest you have celiac disease as opposed to NCGS. But either way, a gluten-free diet is in order. NCGS can cause bodily damage in other ways, particularly to neurological systems.

I made it through the holiday w/o being glutened. I had my brother cook with gluten-free breadcrumbs and I didn't get sick. I baked cookies with gluten-free flour and had dry ingredients for cookies in ziplock bag. I also made gluten cookies as well and guess I did good washing to avoid CC. My wife also went to a french bakery and bought a gluten-free flourless chocolate cake dedicated gluten-free it was out of this world.

What do you mean it would not allow any celiac to eat gluten again. I think if this helps cross contamination when eating out at a non dedicated gluten-free restaurant this would be nice not to encounter the pains. But is their a daily enzyme to take to help strengthen the digestive system?

Hi, thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, no other antibody tests were ordered. I am a 32-year-old male. About two months ago, I ate pancakes and then developed severe diarrhea that lasted the entire day. At night, I became unconscious due to fluid loss and was admitted to the ER, where I received IV fluids. Two days later, I ate bread again and once more developed severe diarrhea. I ended up in the ER again and received IV fluids. In my country, Pakistan, doctors are unfortunately not very thorough, so they treated me for a stomach infection. I visited three or four doctors, including a gastroenterologist, but it seemed like they just wanted to keep me on medications and IV fluids. Eventually, I did some digging myself and started connecting the dots. For years, I’ve had excessive gas buildup and frequent loose stools, but I never paid much attention to it. I also cannot easily digest dairy products. Two years ago, I had a CBC test that showed iron deficiency. My doctor told me to eat more meat and said it was nothing serious. However, for the past five years, I’ve also had severe motion sickness, which I never experienced before. Whenever I get on a bus or in a car, I sometimes lose consciousness for 10–20 seconds and wake up sweaty, and occasionally I feel the need to vomit. After more research on the internet, I came across gluten and celiac disease, so I got two related tests (TTG-IgA & TTG IgG) done along with a stool test and another CBC. The stool test showed weakly positive blood. Ever since eating those pancakes and bread, I’ve had a burning sensation in my gut. My doctor reviewed my tests, he told me to completely stop eating gluten and started me on IV fluids for 20 days, saying that I had severe inflammation in my gut. It has now been two months since I quit gluten, and I’m still not sure whether this is celiac disease or gluten intolerance. I don’t really trust doctors in Pakistan, so I thought I might get some help here.
