Ok so I went to the grocery store yesterday to try to purchase some cereals, corn chips basically anything that was not in the fresh fruit and veggie department that part I understand <_<

But the rest I am confussed does the food/label have to say gluten-free for me to purchase even if I do not see any gluten in the ingredient and if the package does say gluten-free can it still contain gluten??

I am really nervouse to eat any thing beside fruits veggies and meat but I miss my hummus and chips, brownies etc I do not want to get depressed and overwhelmed I want to make this a positive wonderful experience that life has thrown my way and embrace it I am just confused about the "rules"

You can't always tell if there is gluten by reading the ingredients, and it won't necessarily say gluten free. The fewer the ingredients the better. For instance.....my store brand tortilla chips list whole white corn, corn oil, salt. I KNOW there is no gluten. But when you see things like *natural flavors* listed, that is when you can't be sure. Barley could be part of the natural flavors. Current labeling laws require wheat to be labeled if it is present, but not barley. These companies will label ANY gluten ingredient if it is present

There are a lot of products that do not have any gluten in them but they do not say gluten free on the packaging. So yes, some products that do not say gluten free but in the ingredients there are no gluten items then you can eat it. Some companies are starting to put gluten free by the ingredients so that is neat. Some items you might still want to call their 800 line till you get the hang of that company.

Some foods that say gluten free on them might have really small traces of gluten (below the required limit). Some items are made in factories that produce wheat etc. Some of these companies clean their equipment really well between making items up and test the food for gluten but cannot always guarantee it will be safe so that is a toss up.

I have never tried hummus so I am not sure what brands are safe but a lot of people mention hummus and chips on here.

You can still eat brownies! Kinnikinnik makes really good brownies (they are frozen). Or, you can buy a mix and make them yourself. I haven't tried that yet but I'm sure someone can give you a suggestion on good brands. Talking about brownies makes me hungry for them......

I haven't bought the brownie mix yet but a lot of people rave about The Gluten Free Pantry brand brownie mix. I have tried some of their other mixes and they are easy and turn out good.

Chips -- I like Mission white corn tortilla chips (haven't have any problems with them). I also buy their white corn tortialls and white corn taco shells. I personally have stopped buying Frito Lays brand just b/c I was feeling sick with whatever flavor/brand I was buying from their list online. Glutino has really good pretzels though if you like pretzels. I will admit though when I first went gluten free I didn't like the pretzels I think it was b/c I still knew what gluten ones tasted like but I re-tried them months later and they are a nice snack to have on hand.

I like the gluten free pantrys brownie mix. It was pretty good.

      Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

      That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

      Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

      Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

      Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
