First Time Glutenated After 8 Days Gluten Free

I went out to dinner. I had previously looked up the gluten free menu, and also called the restaurant. On my way out, I forgot the info at homeg (I wrote it down) and thought I'd surely be able to rely on my memory (I'd been over it several times.)

I was getting the salmon, veggies, and mashed potatoes and it was confirmed to be free from gluten.

After dinner, and right before we left, I had to go to the bathroom (probably 45 minutes after eating my meal.) Interestingly enough I had the same BM types that I had prior to going gluten free. Malformed, a bit foul smelling, etc. I wasn't in pain, and it was certainly better than it ever used to be, but still I found it odd that it happened b/c it hadn't happened at all since going gluten free (ok sorry if that was TMI!)

So I get home and look at what I wrote down, and sure as you-know-what I WAS glutenated because the mashed potatoes had gravy (and I wrote NO gravy on my paper, and I remember them telling me that also.)

When I ordered though, I had remembered wrong, I forgot about the gravy

Furthermore, strangely, shortly after I went to the bathroom, I became ravenous for food, almost like I hadn't even eaten (again, something that hasn't happened in that manner, since going gluten free, but became a regular occurance over the last six or so months.)

I found it all so amazing - in almost a good way, that my body responded that way because the proof's in the pudding so to speak. Crazy, interesting, huh? LUCKILY .... other than having malformed and loose stool, and being pretty hungry, I am not having any pain - so that's a good thing, and now I see a bit more clearly that all of this may not be coincidental and may seriously be part of the problem. There are many "ifs" and "borderlines" and "coincidences" that seem to be pointing in one direction - the big "G" (gluten)

Has anyone had a similar experience to this? I am so new to all of this, I'm interested in hearing from others who've "been there" a bit longer than me.

Live2BWell - That is exactly how I feel right after I am sick with D, I am ravenous like I haven't eaten in days. It's such an odd feeling. Since I've been gluten free I haven't had that feeling. I have had D but I don't feel like I need to eat a horse afterwards. I wonder why that is?? Does anyone have input?

I have had similar things happen, although different also. I can't sleep after getting glutened because my thyroid goes crazy. Also have gut issues including some pain in LLBB (lower left of belly button). I do get extra hungry for some reason and I Can't explain that at all. Lately I had been eating less, feeling less hungry but glutened myself this week and got the hungries again. Not sleeping well started the first day and is still not totally resolved after 3 days. Pain is not bad though, and gut issues generally not too bad either.

What you’re describing is actually very common, and unfortunately the timing of the biopsy likely explains the confusion. Yes, it is absolutely possible for the small intestine to heal enough in three months on a strict gluten-free diet to produce a normal or near-normal biopsy, especially when damage was mild to begin with. In contrast, celiac antibodies can stay elevated for many months or even years after gluten removal, so persistently high antibody levels alongside the celiac genes and clear nutrient deficiencies strongly point to celiac disease, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Many people with celiac are asymptomatic but still develop iron and vitamin deficiencies and silent intestinal damage. The lack of immediate symptoms makes it harder emotionally, but it doesn’t mean gluten isn’t harming you. Most specialists would consider this a case of celiac disease with a false-negative biopsy due to early healing rather than “something else,” and staying consistently gluten-free is what protects you long-term—even when your body doesn’t protest right away.

Yes, I meant if you had celiac disease but went gluten-free before screening, your results would end up false-negative. As @trents mentioned, this can also happen when a total IGA test isn't done.

I found at Disney springs and Disney they have specialist that when told about dietary restrictions they come and talk to you ,explain cross contamination measures tsken and work with you on choices. Its the one place I dont worry once I've explained I have celiac disease.  Thier gluten free options are awesome.

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.
