Blood Tests- Sgpt?

A few months ago I fell down the stairs at my house and ended up at the ER. While there every test imaginable was done including a SGPT (ALT) my level was 97 and it was noted as abnormal. Normal appears to be 7-56. When I looked it up the SGPT is something related to the liver? No one said anything about it, but I can't help but wonder if this is something to have checked again. How does celiac disease affect the liver?

That is a liver enzyme level. I'm actually seeing a gastroenterologist tomorrow because at my last blood test, my levels were found to be slightly high.

Elevated liver enzymes are a symptom of Celiac--but usually when we go on the gluten-free diet, they come back down. One of mine was elevated shortly before my diagnosis 3 years ago, went back to normal until now. I don't know if this could have anything to do with it, but I was glutened by CC daily for about 2 months (before I figured it out) and this was during the same period that the blood was drawn.

I'm sure it's something that your primary care doctor will want to keep an eye on. The liver makes these enzymes and when it's injured in some way the enzymes can spill over into the bloodstream. Certain meds and alcohol can cause them to rise as well as many other causes. Sometimes they go up for no apparent reason.

is 97 a high number? could my injury cause the elevated number?

Whitball--

I don't know how a doctor would interpret your number. Mine were only a few points above normal (within 10).

When you fell, did you injure yourself in the area of your liver (right side, just under the ribs)?

Lisa Mentor

The liver and cholesteral are related.

I fell head first down the stairs. i had some bruising on my right hip. Caught enough air to hit the last few steps. I did have a ct of my abdomen and I have gallstones, but they are not causing a blockage at this time.

Could be the gallstones--I had to have an ultrasound because I was told that one of the most common reasons for elevated liver enzymes is gallstones/gallbladder trouble. My GP was quite sure I had gallstones, but it turns out my gallbladder is fine.

That was quite a spill you took! Hope you're feeling better.

Are your levels still elevated? Did you find out the cause of the elevation? I am recovering and back to work. I had a mild traumatic brain injury and a shattered wrist as a result of the fall. I am back to work and going through physical therapy three times a week.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
