How Do You Tell If Your Child Has Been Glutened?

Hi,

So I am pretty new to this still, hasn't been a couple of months yet. My daughter is only 2 1/2. I am pretty carefull but I do allow gluten products in our house (eaten at one spot on the counter). I get so confused when she has anything going on with her tummy. Her poops have changed so much I don't even know whats normal any more. I thought at first she was sensitive to dairy so I changed her to soy. Then she stared having more frequent poops so I reduced that and started her on Lactose free milk. That seems to help. But she is still getting tummy aches now and then, I don't know if it is dairy (letting her have tiny amounts) or soy or if she got gluttened?

I'm so confused,

HUGS! It will get easier. I'm still learning too. I can tell when my daughter is glutened because she gets very impulsive, very clingy and has diarrhea.

But, she also has diarrhea when she eats dairy and orange juice.

I just keep paying attention to what she's eaten when something goes wrong with her so I can see if it happens the next time. That's how I found out I can't give her the gluten free pizza that has cheese on it, even for special occasions.

Have you tried her on Rice Milk? This may be easier for her to tolerate than the dairy or soy. But I hear that some brands may have cross contamination or something (Rice Dream).

Good luck to you!

My dd vomits violently when she has gluten. We found this the hard way when she accidentally ate gluten.

She actually started vomiting in her sleep & then it continued for about 8 hours :( She's been gluten-free for about 16mths now, so I don't know if that's way she had such a severe reaction or not.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
