Severe Constipation While Trying To Detox Heavy Metals

Hey Everyone, I'm sorry I haven't been around lately, but I've been having a really rough time!

I've got a boatload of symptoms, but my very first and most severe symptom has been constipation.

While trying to detox metals, my GI tract has completely stopped. I don't think it's because I'm impacted (TMI alert) but the metals make my stool extremely sticky so it will not pass (sorry!). I've lost peristaltic action as well. So I'm extremely bloated, have a painful heavy feeling, but I don't feel like I can go.

I take crazy amounts of Vitamin C and Magnesium, and the magnesium usually helps, but now it's not. I've got a huge problem on my hands!

My wonderful ND suggested high, high doses of Senna and Cascara. She said to try the Senna tonight and add the Cascara tomorrow night. The bottle says to only take 1 at a time and to take it at most 3 times a day, but my ND told me to take 7 tonight. Has anyone used Senna (or Cascara) before, in high doses?

Has anyone else dealt with severe constipation while trying to detox metals? I'm concerned about reabsorption and complications.

Thanks so much, I'd appreciate any advice or input! Hope you all are well...

Many OTC laxatives contain senna and/or cascara, which are strong purgatives. Those can cause extreme cramping pain, while they resolve constipation. I understand your desperation, becauseI've struggled with constipation most of my life, through diagnoses for celiac disease and 6 other IgG mediated food allergies, treatments for bacterial imbalances, candida and a parasite (cryptosporidia). I also take probiotics to help gut motility and HCl with meals for hypochloridia. Each diagnosis and/or treatment helped (got me regular again) FOR AWHILE. Then slowly my chronic constipation would return. I suspect I've exhausted my ND's bag of tricks. So I'm continuing to take probiotics and HCl and hoping for the best.

Rather that just treat the symptom (constipation) I would reconsider HOW you are 'detoxing' from heavy metals? Were you constipated before starting that detox? Are you using any supplements to help you 'detox'? Have you been tested for other food allergies, which could also cause constipation? Have you tested for bacterial imbalances, parasites or fungus (like candida)? Each of those affected my regularity.

I've had impacted stools TWICE (once before celiac disease diagnosis and once afterwards). I use Fleet's enema kits when I'm desparate with impaction. Also a large dose of Milk of Magnesium. With less severe constipation, I just increase liquids and fiber (especially from wet sources like fruits and vegies, rather than dry foods like grains), keep taking my probiotics to increase motility, and have patience.

Have you tried Spirulina and Psyllium husk? B)

I wonder about the liquid phosphate stuff from over the counter at the pharmacy, which you take to prepare for a colonoscopy. At least to try to get this to clear up.

What doses of mag and C are you taking? I recently had a similar episode, but more mag and buffered C helped. Also someone just posted recently about also needing a little calcium along with the mag. My buffered C has a little calcium and potassium in it.

I haven't pushed the senna like that, but have taken it in herbal preparations. I would be tempted to space them out rather than take 7 at once.

What about a coffee enema? Very good for detox from lyme and other things, and might help you clear out stuff at least from the lower bowel.

Burdee, I'm relating to what you say about something working for awhile and then not working.

@N00dnutt, been there, done that! Cheers!

@trents You're right, thanks for pointing that out. On @somethinglikeolivia comment regarding potential ingesting or cross contamination; there is a product marketed in Australia as "GluteGuard" which is designed for just this scenario. It is not a defence for and is not recommended for use by full-blown celiac disease but, it helps those with GI. I'll be reading slower in future so I don't skim over the subject matter. Cheers.

      @Knitty_Kitty Noted with appreciation.

@N00dnutt, as OP explained earlier, she had a gastroscopy done earlier while she had been eating plenty of gluten for months. It was negative despite strong positive antibody scores.

The best way to determine positively is to undergo a Gastroscope. Your Endocrinologist will assess the condition of your "Villi". These tenticles are what extract the nutrient from what we ingest. The Protein in Gluten is like acid to these tenticles.
