Recently Diagnosed And Feeling Dehydrated And Unusually Tired

Hello:

Ten days ago I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Since that time I have adhered to a strictly gluten free diet as directed by my doctor. Additionally, I have continued with my exercise program (although I have slowed it down a bit), but what I am noticing more than anything lately it that I am increasingly tired (less energy) and I have cotton mouth quite a bit.

I haven't been drinking caffeine or really anything but water since my diagnosis. I normally have a good 4 - 8 20oz bottles a day.

Is there any significant connection between being gluten free and increased dehydration lack of energy during the first weeks of recovery?

My symptoms prior to being diagnosed where mild at best. I went in for a routine physical, complained of some gas and pressure from gas and was ultimately diagnosed with Celiac.

Thanks in advance for you help...I am finding that I have lots of questions that my doctor has not answered.

Hello

your body could be going through the transition period & making you tired after you are removing a poision from your system ( wheat). This is a big change to your body.

Try drinking lemon water ... There are other things that can make you feel dehyrated ie: diabetes, sjogren's, thyroid are a few examples.

And be sure you are not getting hidden gluten in something ie: malt flavoring, soy sauce.

some get tired & a headache when they eat MSG but that has nothing to do with gluten.

If things do not get better for you , you may want to try an elimanation diet & reintroduce one thing a week

mamaw's suggestions are good. I have heard some time ago and long since lost the source, that we absorb 70% of the fluids we drink in our small intestines. If the villi are damaged, it would hinder the water absorption. Do what your body is asking for. ;)

In addition to what others have said, you may have an electrolyte imbalance. Sports drinks such as Gatoraid are designed to help with this, so I'd suggest trying that. Last I knew, they are gluten-free, but always check the labels. You can alternatively take potassium and sodium, in orange or other citrus fruit juice.

Until I started taking potassium, I was constantly thirsty.

I was really dehydrated when first dx'd. Before dx'd I remember going to the doctor for a sinus infection. She told me I was dehydrated. I told her it was impossible since I was drinking about 15 cups of water a day! Now I know why. I couldn't absorb it. I also had to urinate all the time.

I am no longer dehydrated and I don't have to urinate so frequently. I think once you start absorbing everything, things start to fall into place.

I did drink Gatorade at first. I had a lot of "D" in the beginning. You will have to give it time. I agree with Rice Guy about the electrolyte imbalance.

I forgot to mention this in my first post, sorry. Here is a quick way to check to see if you are actually dehyrated. Pinch the skin together & slightly pull upward & let go, if your skin stays in that upward place & does not return to normal that is a sign you are dehyrated.The longer it takes to become normal the more you need fluids. Also coffee tea & smoking also can make some dehyrated. I was told a very long time ago that when drinking water for dehyration you should drink about five swallows at a time about every15 min. to a half hour, this way your body can use that fluid properly. When you drink an 8 oz glass of water all at once your body cannot utilize all the fluid . That is why most just are running to the bathroom constantly.....

      I realized it is actually important to get an official diagnosis because then insurance can cover bone density testing and other lab work to see if any further damage has been done because of it. Also, if hospitalized for whatever reason, I have the right to gluten-free food if I am officially celiac. I guess it gives me some legal protections. Plus, I have 4 kids, and I really want to know. If I really do have it then they may have increased risk.

      Been off this forum for years. Is it that important that you get an official diagnosis of something? It appears like you had a trigger (wheat, gluten, whatever) and removing it has resolved your symptom. I can't speak for you, but I had known what my trigger was (gluten) years before my diagnosis I would just stay gluten-free and get on with my symptom free condition. I was diagnosed over 20 years ago and have been symptom free only excluding wheat, rye and barley. I tolerate all naturally gluten free whole foods including things like beans which actually helps to form the stools.

      No coincidence. Recent revisions to gluten challenge guidelines call for the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of 3 weeks. If possible, I would extend that two weeks to ensure valid testing.

      Thank you both for the replies. I decided to bring back gluten so I can do the blood test. Today is Day #2 of the Challenge. Yesterday I had about 3 slices of whole wheat bread and I woke up with urgent diarrhea this morning. It was orange, sandy and had the distinctive smell that I did not have when I was briefly gluten free. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the brain fog is back and I feel very tired.

      @Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed.
