Well I made it to my oldest son's allergist/immunology appointment. I had a topic on him in January about possible gluten intolerance and was considering a trial of gluten free. I won't repeat myself so here is the link......https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=54964 Anyway, since the my last post on the topic I found out what his problem was. The beginning of March he had a slight fever and complained of his ear hurting. He never complains of earaches so I took him to the ped and to my suprise he had a wopping sinus infection. He has not had one in 2 years. I guess it is easy to forget what things were like when it goes away. He acted just like that when he had chronic sinus infections before finding out about his allergies. I kept him eating gluten in the off chance we had any more blood work done yesterday. I felt I was talking to a brick wall. I updated our medical history for his chart (husband highblood pressure and on meds and me celiac) and the celiac got the NP on the subject. She said wow it is rare to get diagnosed as old as I am since it is mostly caught in early child hood. WOW is this so wrong! I told her it was not all that uncommon and that there was still alot of misinformation out there especially the not so"classic poster child" person. I discussed possible further testing with my oldest and she did not feel it necessary. (I think if we had seen the actual Dr. I might have gotten somewhere) I told her about all his bowel issues until he was four and yes he seems ok with the constipation now, but we watch what he eats. I told her I was like him, minus the allergies, when I was little and now look at me two autoimmune diseases. I also addressed his height and weight. He was 49# and 48 3/4" tall yesterday. It put him in the 25th percentile. He is a very active boy so his weight does not bother me because he burns it off. There are short people in the family so I can't rule that out either. Anyway I could see I was loosing that battle and shut up because I was getting upset, especially since I had no sleep from working all night before. The one good thing that did come out of his appointment was that he is scheduled for a methacoline challenge test in June. When he went initially 2 years ago they diagnosed him with asthma. I did not realize that until he went for a check up at age 7. I have been insistant that he does not have it. They diagnosed him based on a pulmonary function test he had when he was six. I honestly believe he did not understad the directions when he did it then because everyone he has done since has been great. Of course she told me he could have asthma and be asymptomatic. So I guess we will see. The irritating thing my husband is on board with the NP thinking on the gluten intolerance. The only person who is supportive in my thinking about a trial is our NP at the peds office. She is great! She even said she would write a note for school if I needed her to. I think my husband thinks I'm trying to find something wrong with him. If that was the case why would I be insistant he does not have asthma when they say he does? Also I am not even worried about my 4 year old at this time about celiac. He is really starting to take off growing and he is almost done with all his meds. He goes off everthing in May. if he does well for the next six months then we are done with the specialist(same one as the oldest) I'm sorry for the rant I just don't know what to think anymore. Maybe I should just leave things the way they are and see how things go.

Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.
