Stomach Pain After Eating

Hey everyone. I've done searches and read a few threads that were related to this, but most seemed to be about heartburn and talk about symptoms that I am not experiencing. I apologize if this is something that's posted/asked about often.

I have been completely gluten-free since December, and have also discovered other intolerances along the way. I no longer eat those problematic foods. I've been losing weight again (which I need to do!) and have been able to exercise like I used to. All in all, things have been progressing nicely.

BUT, for the past couple of weeks, I've been having stomach pain after each meal or snack. It doesn't matter what I eat, when I eat, or how much, though I will say that when I eat more I have more pain. The pain comes on IMMEDIATELY, it's not any of this 30-minutes-later stuff like if I'd consumed gluten or another food that I am intolerant to. It's been getting worse as each day goes by. Now it's getting to the point that when I eat, not only do I have intense pain, but also nausea and I feel like I'm going to throw up. (I'm not sure if the nausea is its own symptom or just a coping mechanism for the pain.) It's not a food intolerance issue, at least not like anything I've experienced related to food intolerance, as it feels completely different. I have no gas (until the next morning); instead I feel like my insides are being eaten, or that I'm being hollowed out, or really, that someone just pummeled the heck out of my stomach. It's just intense, solid, pain starting in the middle of my abdomen, between my ribs and navel. I feel raw inside, yet my food seems to just sit there. My BMs are unpredictable, too. Some days it will be D, others, C.

I have an appointment with a GP tomorrow, and I'd like to go in there armed with information. I've been doing some research and I've come up with some causes to investigate. I took the "baking soda test" this morning...it's been 2 hours and I still have NOT burped! Please tell me if I'm on the right track or if you've experienced anything like this.

Possible causes:

*gastritis

*ulcer

*low stomach acid

*pancreatitis

*h. pylori

Anything else I should ask about? Thanks in advance!

I hope you get some answers today from your Dr. I have h.pylori, and before I was being careful about what I ate, I would feel it pretty quickly, and I know some people with it have pretty intense pain.

Let us know how the appt goes!

You already indicated a few of the things that popped in my head. I get that way when I get glutened, and you have described a lot of how it makes me feel. I usually find that apple cider vinger with some water (like 1 tsp in a shot glass w/water) helps ease that burning sensation. I think I am on the low side of stomach acid production, and when I get glutened it is just 10x worse.

I was going to get tested for h pylori, and still might later on down the road, but my symptoms cleared up. (I knew I had been glutened, and it takes about a week and a half for the burning sensation to wear off). I hope you get some answers!!

I have had the same situation arise, but I have found it is associated to hidden Glutens in something I ate. As example, Saturday we had Johnsonville Stadium Brats. I have eaten them before with now issue and their website says they are gluten free, but I will tell you those puppies (I ate 2) had something in them. The pain was horrible!!! I even had chills this time with it. This was one of the worst episodes I have had yet! I do know the pain you are describing and it is the worst. I can be hit by the pain minutes to as long as an hour after eating. I think it depends on the quality and amount of the gluten I got. Double check what you ate (are eating) I think you are going to be surprised to find gluten in it somewhere. Good luck. :)

Sounds like how I would have described my gastritis. I would wake up retching. I think mine was from all the oral iron I was taking. Now that I've stopped it, I'm feeling much better. the hematologist I'm seeing pushed down on my belly between my ribs--about two inches below my sternum--and I about came off the table. She said, "That's gastritis!" I knew I had mild gastritis from an endoscopy I'd had earlier.

There are lots of causes of gastritis. The key is figuring it out and eliminating it.

Hi there :-)

You are not alone in this arena - I've just recently had a bad chest infection and it has triggered a whole new spectrum of reactions to food such as, violent pain just as the last mouthful (which isn't even cleaning the plate I might add lol) reaches the mouth. Pain so bad I can feel it in my lower back, in my stomach, the gas builds up so quickly it is amazing.

I was gluten free for a short while before falling sick but the severe reaction to eating ie I felt nauseous as soon as food touched my lips and then a short while later I would also get really bad chills, so cold and then the diahorrea. I think your body must try to purge itself of this unwanted agent that it causes such violent reactions. And yes, you think you're going mad or at least your body is but you're not. It's just our bodies are trying to tell us something and unfortunately the language we have to communicate in isn't the most pleasant language to enter into a dialogue lol.

I too hope that I will be able to get on top of some of these reactions and I guess the only way of doing so is to keep trying and try and try again until you find a recipe that one's body likes.

:-)

If you successfully digest gluten with enzyme supplements so it won’t give you side effects, your challenge won’t be worthwhile because the digested fragments of gluten also won’t stimulate antibody production or cause intestinal damage.

Thanks for the resource! I will check it out!

You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
